SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEGUNDO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
January 19th, 2020
CALLED TO BE HOLY With this Sunday we begin Ordinary Time. The readings tell us about God’s relationship with Israel and John the Baptist’s relationship with Jesus. Is-rael’s relationship with God is so close, so intimate, that it is through Israel that God’s “salvation [will] reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). But we know from John the Baptist that for Israel to accom-plish God’s will, it must also recognize that Jesus is the Son of God. During these weeks we also get to know Jesus. We begin to understand more deeply our relationship to Jesus and what that relationship means for us, who are “called to be holy” (1 Corinthi-ans 1:2). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The primary source for these reflections is The Spiritual Life: A Treatise on Ascetical and Mystical Theology by The Very Rev. Adolphe Tanquerey. Published in 1930.
(Mateo 6).
AVARICE This is part of a series on the seven capital sins. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also…You cannot serve both God and mammon. (Matthew 6). The capital sin we shall consider today is avarice. Re-member the three kinds of concupiscence from last week? Avarice falls under concupiscence of the eyes. Also remember that these seven vices are disorderly loving or corrupting of things that are good in themselves. Ava-rice is defined as the inordinate love of earthly goods. By earthly goods is meant material merchandise, possessions, or property. What is the purpose of earthly goods? Most of them are not bad, in themselves, hence why they are called “goods”. For example, money is not bad, in itself. It depends on how we use it. God gives us these earthly goods for two reasons; first for our own personal benefit and secondly for the benefit of others. Some earthly goods are necessary, and it is our duty to acquire them by honest work. Other earthly goods are not necessary but can be useful. It is not at all wrong to desire useful goods, provided we desire them for the right reasons. How can love of earthly goods become disor-dered? 1) By intention – to desire wealth for its own sake, or for a dishonest or immoral purpose. Earthly goods should be means to higher ends, not the end in itself. When this happens, we fall into idolatry and wor-ship the golden calf. 2) By the manner of seeking – to pursue them by eagerness or by any means necessary, regardless of other’s rights or the harm we may do to them or to ourselves. 3) By the way we use them – to be stingy with spending because we want to gain as much as we can for ourselves. By not giving to the poor and doing goods works. When money and possessions become an idol. Avarice is a grave sin because it is a sign of a lack of trust in God’s providence. “See the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his rich-es, and sought refuge in his wealth” (Ps 52:7). When we love possessions inordinately, then we love them more than we love God. They have taken the place of God in our hearts. Just because we may not be rich, doesn’t mean that we aren’t capable of avarice. Not all rich people are guilty of avarice and not all poor people are free of avarice. A per-son may be wealthy and not have the inordinate desire. A person may be poor and yet be consumed with a desire for riches and possessions. Those consumed by this greed are so absorbed in the pursuit of material gain that they cannot give a thought to their spiritual welfare. A rich merchant lay on his death-bed, and a priest stood at his side, urging him to repentance. After setting before him the gravity of his state, the priest held up a silver cru-cifix before him. The dying man fixed his eyes upon it with a softened expression, and the priest rejoiced, think-ing the man’s heart was touched, but no; the only words that escaped his lips were these: “What do you consider that cross to be worth?”

Catholics and the Bible Presented by deacon Brian Soileau
Tuesday, January 21st 6:00pm-9:00pm The Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God. In sev-enty-three books, it gives us the history of God’s plan for our salvation, beginning with the creation of the world and ending with the beginnings of the Christian Church. Alt-hough it is made up of many books it tells one story. But where did it come from? Who wrote it? And when was it written? We will explore these questions and many others as we dive into the history of the Bible and the catholic Church. This evening of Reflection is intended to provide those attending with a deeper knowledge of the role of the Catholic Church in establishing the Canon of Scripture as dispelling the myths and untruths concerning the Church and the Bible. This class is perfect for RCIA classes! Registrations: Saint Charles Center 337-855-1232 or stcharlescenter.com by Friday January 17. Donation $20.00
