Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against Winsford United. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game.

It has been a week since we were last here at Brocstedes Park as welcomed one of the form sides in the NWCFL, Premier Division in Congleton Town a side that we have an awful recent home record against. The early signs were promising for St Helens as we started brightly and threatened as early as the first minute when Aaron Morris had an effort which deflected over the bar. Further pressure saw returning skipper Andy Gillespie latch onto a through ball and go past his defender getting to byline before looking to centre but he was thwarted by the defender who had recovered well. It was the hosts who took the lead on the half hour when Ryan Taylor beat the Congleton offside trap to collect a through ball and kept his composure to fire well past the advancing visiting stopper. The lead was not to be held for long as Congleton levelled 8 minutes later. Scott McGowan was the man who was on hand to fire the visitors from Cheshire level as he collected a ball with his back to goal on the edge of the box before deftly turned a defender and finding the net with the aid of the inside of the left hand upright. Congleton looked more likely to take the lead before the interval but as it was the sides went in level at the break. The second half belonged to the visitors and the main orchestrator of the St Helens torment was McGowan and it was he who put Congleton into the lead on 66 minutes with a world class finish from the edge of the box and was then denied ten minutes later when another effort from outside the area

beat the keeper but rebounded off the cross bar and was cleared. Moments later McGowan was denied this time by Crowther before the striker rounded off the scoring late on netting his third latching onto a long ball and firing home to secure the points for the visitors and leaving St Helens looking worriedly over their shoulders at the relegation trap door. We welcome another Cheshire side this afternoon in Winsford United who have had a busy midweek having hosted Glossop North End on Tuesday evening going down 4-1 before welcoming Northwich Victoria to

the Barton Stadium on Thursday evening in the Mid Cheshire Senior Cup, Semi Final and went down to a narrow 1-0 reverse to the Evo-Stik Division One, North high-flyers. Winsford are another team we have a poor recent record against with United having won the previous eight contests with the last Town win coming in August 2010 at the Barton Stadium. Town will need to change their fortunes both recently in the league and historically against Winsford this afternoon as we have just five matches remaining to preserve our ever-present tenure in the NWCFL top flight going back to the inaugural season back in 1982/3. The recent signs have been promising with the performances improving game on game, now we just need to see a return for the lads endeavours. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto victory you support is vital to the cause! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today Winsford United have a long and proud history, having been formed way back

in 1883. In those early days, the club was called Over Wanderers and competed in the Welsh Combination Football League. After a few seasons, the club changed to its present name and its present ground - Barton Stadium - although it was called Great Western Playing Field at the outset. The club brought on many good players during this period and after losing several players to Football League clubs, they experienced a somewhat unsuccessful spell that resulted in the club folding. United reformed in 1913, thanks in the main to the then secretary, Mr W H Burning, but it was short lived as World War One broke out. After the cessation of hostilities,

United regrouped with a new committee headed by Mr R G Barton (hence Barton Stadium) and the club became a founder member of the Cheshire League, winning the Championship in its second season. That was to be one of the few successes as the Blues struggled to survive both on and off the field. During the War, Barton Stadium was almost stripped bare to aid the war effort. After the war, United became a Limited company and the 1950’s saw the Blues win the Cheshire League Cup three times and a Cheshire Senior Cup victory. In the 60’s and early 70’s the Blues returned to struggling ways with only a rare FA Cup First Round appearance at Peterborough to shout about. United lost the game 4-1. That match acted as a springboard and, under John Williams, Winsford United hit the glory trail. Between 1976 and 1980, the Blues won the Cheshire League title in 1976/77, were runners-up in 1979/80 and set a new record by winning the League Cup four seasons out of five, including a hat-trick of wins (1979 & 80 & 81). They won the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1980 and made an appearance in the quarterfinals of the FA Trophy in 1978. It was in John Williams’ final season that the former Everton and Welsh International goalkeeper, Neville Southall, was sold to Bury for £6,000. A sell on clause later netted United a club record figure of around £30,000 when he moved to Goodison Park. After that halcyon period, United’s fortunes again nose-dived. The Cheshire League merged with The Lancashire League to become The North West Counties League and the Northern Premier League formed a first division in 1987/8. The Blues were invited to join but they never really set the place on fire, seventh place being the best achieved. In January 1991, Winsford were bottom of the NPL First Division and facing a drop back down to the NWCFL. The club then pulled a masterstroke by appointing Mike McKenzie as team manager. They lost only four more games and avoided the drop. A piece of silverware was added when they beat Northwich Vics in the local cup final. In 1991/92 they gained promotion to the Premier Division, finishing as runners up and reaching the First Round of the FA Cup for only the third time in the club’s history. Season 1992/93 will go down in United’s folklore as ‘Macca’s’ men won an astonishing five trophies - the NPL Challenge Cup, NPL President’s Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup, Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup and NPL Runners Up Cup. The Blues finished second to Southport and their points total is a record for the most points accrued without winning the title. Sadly the team then broke up in the summer of 1993 when Mike McKenzie was lured into Conference football. Under the management of Dalton Steele, United finished seventh in the league and lifted the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. Season 1998 saw Steele leave for Chorley, taking nearly all the team with him; Mark Came took over and finished the season off with a makeshift side. The club received another tremendous boost early in 1999 when goalkeeper Andy Oakes who had signed for Hull City for a modest fee but with a 25% sell-on clause was signed by Derby County for £480,000 giving Winsford a record amount for a Non-League sell-on clause. Came took the regins for the 1999/2000 campaign but a run of poor results saw Kevin Tully put in the hot seat. What followed was the worst run of results in the club’s history and relegation for the first time. At the start of the 2000/2001 season in Unibond Division One Tully left, and Steve Shaughnessy was appointed Player/Manager. The team performed well throughout the season but administrative errors resulted in 6 points being deducted and instead of finishing in a mid-table spot they were relegated to The First Division of the North West Counties League. It took another 5 seasons before Winsford were able to start the long climb back. Unfortunately during

Winsford United that time they fell another step into NWCFL Division Two. The appointment of Dave Twite and a lot of hard work by the board saw a steady improvement in the fortunes of the club. When Dave left the club, Chris Wilcok replaced him. The 2005/06 season saw Chris and assistant manager John Flanagan led the team to the Division two title. However both Chris and John left the club during the close season to take over at Woodley Sports. Former Town manager Joe Gibiliru took over for the 2007/8 season and Winsford spent the majority of that term in the top half of the table before finishing in 10th position. They club secured some silverware when they won the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup defeating fellow Vodkat League, Division One outfit Congleton Town in the final, running out 2-1 winners with a late goal. The club appointed Tony Ledwards as his successor for 2009/10. With the club again struggling Ledwards left by mutual consent in March with a team of Mike Allcock and Dave Twite taking up the reigns. They steadied the ship as the club secured some excellent results to secure Premier Division football for Winsford United this term. They also steered the club to the League Challenge Cup Final including ending Town’s chances of silverware with a 1-0 victory at the Semi Final stage. They however turned in a disappointing performance when it mattered and fell to defeat at the hands of relegated Abbey Hey in the final. Former manager Chris Willcock took over at the start of last season with Ian Street as his Assistant. There was a shock at the beginning of February however and more than a little touch of déjà vu when Willcock announced he was once again leaving to take charge at Woodley Sports, leaving Ian Street in charge. The club finished the season in a creditable third place and were victorious in the Challenge Cup Final against Premier Division Champions New Mills Ian Street remained in charge for the 2011-2012 season and Kevin Bircumshaw was appointed as his Assistant. The team made a great start to the season, spending several weeks at or near the top of the table and promotion looked a distinct possibility. However a series of suspensions and injuries saw the team have a bad run in the weeks leading up to Christmas gaining just two points from a possible twenty-four. The form was recovered in the New Year but the gap had become too great and Winsford ended the season in seventh place. The summer break saw Ian Street decide to take a post closer to home and he accepted the job of Manager at Ashton Athletic. The Manager’s position was advertised and although there were many creditable applicants the board had no hesitation in appointing former Flixton Manager Lloyd Morrison with Kevin Bircumshaw remaining as his Assistant. The season was one of the most successful for years with the club finishing 5th in the league and defeating Northwich Victoria in the final of the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. The summer of 2013 saw great changes taking place at the stadium with the news that 1874 Northwich were to share the ground and their enthusiastic supporters helped to bring the ground up to a high standard, Also E.ON adopted the club for their 2013 Community Project and carried out a great refurbishment of the facilities including a new toilet block, a first aid suite and help in restoring the floodlights. They also supplied the materials for all the maintenance work that had to be carried out. However, with everything in place for a serious assault on the league title and over £20,000 spent on improving the facilities and pitch, the club was rocked when two weeks before the start of the season Lloyd Morrison announced he was going to Mossley AFC as Joint Manager and not only that, he expected to take sixteen registered players with him. The board acted quickly to appoint Eddy Haslam as Manager with Rob Byrne as his Assistant and Kevin Bircumshaw remaining as coach. With only a couple of weeks to put a team together Eddy worked hard to bring in a squad of quality players to begin the campaign. The early results were quite remarkable considering the lack of pre-season preparation time and runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase have given the club a boost. The team had been struggling in the league and after some poor results the manager left by mutual consent. The post was advertised and there were over twenty applicants, however, the Assistant Manager Rob Byrne and Coach Kevin Bircumshaw said they wanted to give it a go and so they were put in charge on a match by match agreement. Following three important victories they were given the post on a permanent basis. The Management team was retained for this season and once again there was an air of optimism at the Barton Stadium.

From the Chair Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with Winsford United. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with ur own supporters are treated to an entertaining afternoon.

I would also like to thank Adam McLean and everyone at King Construction who are today’s first time match ball sponsors and Contego Security UK, our Veterans team kit sponsors who have also sponsored today’s match - your continued support of the club is greatly appreciated. It’s been a very busy week for Winsford United and today’ game will be their fourth in eight days! Last Saturday they battled out a goalless draw away at Sildsen (Winsford third successive 0-0 score line) while midweek they were the latest ‘victim’ of Glossop North End’s march towards the Premier Division title (1-4) and Thursday evening saw the ‘Blues’ narrowly bow out of the Mid Cheshire Senior Cup 0-1 to Northwich Victoria at the semi-final stage. It’s been a much quieter week for Ian and the lads without a midweek fixture for what seems to be the first time in a while. Last Saturday saw a lot of pluses in the 1-3 home defeat to Congleton Town who showed a little more quality to take the spoils. Ryan Taylor hit his first goal for the club while we saw the return of Andy Gillespie after a lengthy spell out with injury. There have been a number of new faces added to the squad over the last few weeks and we have to be confident that the team will gel enough to secure us a couple wins which may ease our relegation worries. By they time we play again (Glossop North End away on Monday 30th March) some of our relegation rivals will have been in midweek action and have played next Saturday and we have to hope

that a point or three this afternoon can add to their pressures. Congratulations to Town U17s players Dominic Wallis, Jordan Wynne, Mikey Coburn and John Fortes who were selected to play for the Liverpool County FA last weekend and to the club’s U21s side who ran out impressive 0-6 winners over the GB Deaf Under 23s last Sunday at Walton Hall Avenue. Marcus Perry (3), Ryan Johnson, Tom Disley and an own goal completing the Town scoring. The U21s are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to League leaders Silverdale Athletic in what promises to be a cracking game and which may have a big part to play in deciding the eventual champions as Town currently trail their hosts by five points but have three games in hand. Finally, our best wishes go to Glossop North End who are in FA Vase semi-final 1st leg action this afternoon at AFC St Austell (Cornwall). Let’s hope that when we travel to Surrey Street in 9 days time the ‘Hillmen’ are celebrating a place at Wembley. John McKiernan Chairman St Helens Town AFC

NWCFL News Junior sides from Ashton Athletic and Daisy Hill are in action this coming Sunday, in finals of Lancashire FA County Cup competitions at the County Ground in Leyland. Ashton Athletic face Britannia AFC in the final of the LFA under 16 Youth Cup, kick 1.45 pm. It's the latest cup final in a run of success for the team in recent years, as Athletic Secretary Alan Greenhalgh explained.

"The team have largely been together for a few years, right the way through from Under 7s, and every year they have done well", he said. "They won the LFA Under 15s final last year, as well as winning the league and another cup, and they are top of the league this year. They will have some good support from the club on Sunday, most of committee will be there to cheer them on, although a few of us will have to stay behind as we have an under 18s game at the club at the same time, so it's a pity the two games clash. "But we obviously hope they do well on the day, and we hope they can continue to progress next season too, when we are looking to enter the team in to the North West Youth Alliance". In the final of the LFA Under 18 Youth Cup, Daisy Hill face Thornton Cleveleys Juniors, in a game that kicks off at 5.30 pm. The Daisy youngsters have beaten some local rivals on the way to the final, including Golborne Sports and Ashton Athletic, and can now attempt to lift the trophy in a competition with which the club has

some past history. Daisy Hill Secretary Bob Naylor explained: "We have won this competition twice in the past, in seasons 1967-68 and again in 1968-69. "At the time the team was playing in the Bolton Boys Federation, and it might seem a bit strange now, but the norm at the time was that the junior teams entered the competition under a leader's name. "With me being club Secretary at the time, in those two seasons, our junior team entered under the name "Naylor's Eleven" and to this day it's that team

name that is listed in the LFA handbook as the winners of the competition. "But obviously if we win on Sunday it will be the name of Daisy Hill that will go into the records. "The team have had a good season in the league, and played really well to beat Ramsbottom United's under 18s in the semi final, "The game was played on a 3G surface, but they adapted to it really well, and won 4-2. I'm sure they will all enjoy playing on the good playing surface at the County Ground on Sunday".

NWCFL News Glossop North End are gearing up for one of the most notable weeks in their history, as they prepare to travel to AFC St Austell for Saturday's FA Vase semi-final first leg. Interest in the tie has been huge, with tickets and places on supporters’ coaches being snapped up, and tickets for the second leg at Surrey Street a week on Saturday sold

out within 48 hours of going on sale earlier in the week. The trip that Glossop will make is one of the longest ever by a club from the North West Counties Football League for an FA Vase tie. The 326 miles from Surrey Street to Poltair Park in St Austell is topped only by the 346 mile trip made by St Helens Town in 1987, when they visited Falmouth Town in a quarter final replay. On that occasion, Town won 1-0 and went on to win the trophy, so everyone associated with Glossop will be hoping that is a good omen for the weekend. When the travelling band of players, officials and supporters reach their destination after the long trip down from Glossop, they will find a town which is the main centre of the china clay industry in Cornwall. If the visitors have time, they may fancy a visit to the China Clay Country Park, in a former china-clay pit two miles north of the town, which tells the story of the residents who lived, worked and played in the shadow of the clay tips around St Austell. However, they may be more attracted to the town centre, which recently underwent a £75 million redevelopment, and the local hostelries selling produce from the St Austell Brewery, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2001 and supplies cask ale to pubs around Cornwall and beyond. As far as footballing matters are concerned, there can be little doubt that the semi-final tie will be contested by two teams that have provided formidable opposition to every side they have faced this season. Around the NWCFL, everyone is aware of Glossop’s title chase, their goalscoring form and their ability to keep clean sheets, and AFC St Austell can boast a similar story in the Carlsberg South Western Peninsula League Premier Division. They are currently nine points behind the league leaders Saltash United with seven games in hand, and warmed up for Saturday’s game with a 4-0 win at Saltash on Wednesday night. They have lost just two league games all season, are unbeaten at home, and like Glossop, they boast impressive

goalscoring power through centre forward Liam Eddy, who has scored 39 goals in all competitions this season. It promises to be another tough test for Glossop, but having beaten several teams at the top of their respective leagues to get to this stage of the competition, they will be more than ready for the Cornish experience. Glossop Press Officer Jonathan Haggart will be making the long trip to Cornwall, and says that optimism is high among the travelling support. “We're leaving at 9am on Friday morning, but staying outside of St Austell and coming back on Sunday. It's likely there will be around 200 of us heading down. We're looking forward to the weekend, if not the epic journey.

Town Managers

Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

Past & Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving

on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town

manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club ’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club ’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation.

2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price (left) took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire

secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase

winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

of St Helens Town AFC

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop. Following the demolition of the Knowsley Road ground in 2010, Town have led a nomadic existence up the road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, sharing Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground for three seasons before moving across town to Brocstedes Park as the guests of Ashton Athletic in 2012. The current season is scheduled to be the club’s last in exile, as plans are in place for re-location back to St. Helens for the 2015-16 season at the Council-owned Ruskin Park site, currently undergoing massive redevelopment and a brand-new facility awaits. In readiness for the move, the club is undergoing a radical re-branding, adopting the town’s coat of arms as their badge once again and reverting next season to their traditional blue and white colours in preparation for a return to the town in 2015.

NWCFL News Barnton have announced the appointment of Leon Knight as their new First Team Manager. 32 year old Leon played for fifteen different clubs across five countries during his professional career, beginning at Chelsea, and spent three years with Brighton and Hove Albion, scoring 30 goals in 106 league matches.

He took charge of the Barnton side at Atherton LR recently, steering them to a 3-0 win and having taking over the reins permanently, he has appointed former Barnton manager Andy Burgess as his new assistant, and current captain Colin Quirk has been promoted to First Team Coach, in a new look set up. Leon said: "It's a wonderful club run the right way. To be given this opportunity is massive for me and I will grab it with both hands.

"I've chosen Andy Burgess and Colin Quirk as my back room staff for many reasons. I've known Andy a long time so I know what he brings to the table and I've struck up a relationship with Colin that we cemented over the last few months, and he plays his football the right way. "I will give 100% and be at every single training session and match and be 1 million per cent committed to this club and to these lads. This is also an opportunity for players who haven't previously been involved to impress us and claim a shirt. "I’d like to add a thanks to all of the players for their messages of support, but the work starts now! I’ll be looking to add just one or two players to what we have here, with maybe a very well-known face joining the club this week".

Barnton Chairman Ian Ross said: "I couldn’t be happier with this appointment. Since Leon’s been at the club he’s been a breath of fresh air. I half expected some big-time Charlie when he signed in truth, but he’s as far removed from that type of character as you're likely to meet. "Although signed as a player, Leon’s knowledge of the game has seen him develop seamlessly into his previous role at the club. When I spoke to Leon about taking on this vacancy, his response was instant despite the position he found himself in. "I’m 100% certain he will bring lots of positives to the club, and the lads here I ’m sure will all develop further under his stewardship Leon knows what he wanted from the off, and in Andy and Colin, I know he has lads around him that will serve him and the club fantastically well".

Match Report St Helens Town 1-3 Congleton Town

St. Helens Town suffered another two 3-1 home defeats last week as the battle to avoid relegation from the NW Counties Premier Division stepped up, with bottom club Bacup picking up four points to close the gap on the three teams above. With games running out, Town urgently need to find

wins to lift themselves out of danger and the likelihood is that they will be relegated from the top flight for the first time in the league’s 33 year history. Although new blood has been drafted in to stave off the threat of the drop, the players have only five games to turn the season around, but with no league wins since November and a return of only one point from the last 42, the odds are stepped very much against salvaging their ever-present status in the Premier Division. Tuesday’s defeat to Glossop was perhaps predictable, but despite an improved performance from Town’s youthful side, the visitors strode into a three goal lead before Jack McKay salvaged some pride with a last minute consolation goal. Saturday’s game against Congleton, in contrast, saw St. Helens on top for most of the first half and they deservedly took the lead on the half-hour when a long ball found Ryan Taylor and captain Andy Gillespie, returning from injury, bearing down on a single defender and the Bears’ keeper, Dale Eve. Taylor’s finish was exquisite, scoring decisively, to put Town one up.

However, the lead was short-lived, for Congleton gathered their composure and after a number of raids, centre forward Scott McGowan, who was outstanding throughout, beat Lewis Coyle’s tackle and placed the ball just out of Rory Crowther’s reach, inside the right hand post to level the scores six minutes before the break. Crowther had a magnificent game for Town, pulling off any number of great saves, diving at the feet of attackers, launching full-length to smother low balls and tipping chances around the uprights and there were two marvellous stops to deny Congleton either side of the interval. On the occasions he was beaten, defenders were on hand to clear off the line, most notably McKay, who saved a certain goal early in the second half. Sadly, Eve at the opposite end, had very little to do, as Town struggled to test the Cheshire side’s defence to any extent

and Congleton took the lead for the first time on 66 minutes when McGowan’s dipping shot from the edge of the penalty area agonisingly cleared Crowther’s leap. Town tried all they could to salvage a point from the game, but Congleton’s defence gave away very few chances. However, Gillespie surged forward and, crossing into the 18-yard box was tripped and appeared to have a solid case for a free-kick, if not a penalty, but the decision was not forthcoming and, in a cruel twist, the visitors cleared the ball upfield and the lively McGowan was on hand again to nip around Crowther to complete his hat-trick and end Town’s resistance.
