Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Colne. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they have had a pleasant trip to visit us here at Edge Green Street, enjoy their short stay and have a safe journey home after the contest. It has been a long while since we were last here at Edge Green Street to take on AFC Blackpool in the League Challenge Cup 2nd Round tie and despite a pretty even first half we failed to show during the second period and exited the competition to end our hopes for silverware this season. We followed this up with the short trip to Wigan Robin Park and in this contest we dominated the first quarter of an hour only to fall behind against the run of play when former Town man Phil Howard netted, two further first half goals end the game as a contest and despite a better second half from the lads we were on the end of a second consecutive 3-0 reverse. From that point on we were largely frustrated by the weather as 10 out of our next fourteen matches fell foul of the weather. The next game which survived the weather was our trip to Winsford on 10th November and after having most of the possession in the first twenty minutes only to conceded. The response was much better than at Wigan with Alex Dunne striking an upright and Ste Edwards just failing to connect with a left wing cross which would have been a certain goal and from the counter our hosts netted. In added on time Edwards was felled and Dunne converted from the spot with Town pushing for a leveller a counter saw the hosts put things beyond doubt. We then took the relatively short trip to Brocstedes Park a fortnight later to take on Ashton Athletic and again after playing well we fell behind before Lee Harrison levelled with a great finish from an acute angle and after dominating the start of the second half we again conceded before immediately hitting back after Ste Edwards turned a pinpoint cross from Phil Williams home and despite being reduced to 10 men when Craig Fitzjohn received a 2nd yellow card we looked the better team for the final half hour and should have won the contest We then ventured to league leaders Maine Road on the 1st December and took the lead after a thunder-bolt from Phil Williams before a quick leveller from Road and a heartbreaking late winner from the hosts in what was a fine all round performance from Town which deserved at least a point. It was same old same old as we again went down 2-1 at Stockport Sports a week later, after a good opening quarter of an hour from Town the host took the lead after a right wing cross was deflected home by Chris Williams but the sides went in level at the break after Williams made amends being fouled from a corner and Shaun Judge converted the spot kick, Town despite some fine play were again denied any return as the hosts netted from a corner during the second period. Talk of the Town . . .




In Town Today . . . The town of Colne was left without a major football club after the untimely demise of the highly successful Colne Dynamoes club in 1990. That side had won the NWCL, the Unibond League Division One and the Unibond League Premier Division in consecutive seasons, as well as winning the FA Vase and Lancashire Challenge Trophy within the same period. In January 1996, Colne FC was formed by a group of like-minded people under Dave Blacklock. The enthusiasts combined their strengths and knowledge of non-league football and arrangements were made for the new club to use the now vacant Holt House Stadium, used by the previous club. Colne FC applied to join the Lancashire Football Association, the North West Counties League and the East Lancashire FA. The LFA and the East Lancashire League accepted their application, but much work was needed to be done on the Holt House ground to bring it up to the standard required for the North West Counties League. After a lot of hard work by everyone at the club, the necessary work was completed in time and Colne were recommended for acceptance into the NWCL. The member clubs at the Leagues AGM approved this in June 1996. Colnes first ever competitive match was on the 17th August 1996 against Middlewich Athletic and the result ended in a 1-0 defeat. The team was managed in these early days by Keith Mason, but his side was mainly made up of players from the East Lancs League and they always found the going tough. A further 10 defeats followed until a local derby against Nelson ended 1-1, thus giving the new club their first point. Mason resigned from the club owing to work commitments and Colne’s Vice President, Ken Bracewell, stood in until a new manager could be found. The club appointed Denzil Hart. Hart’s first game in charge was a 6-0 away defeat at the hands of Ashton Town. Two games later and Colne had their first ever victory, a thumping 5-2 win over Bacup Borough. Denzil Hart’s job was always tough and although the clubs performances improved, the results were not forthcoming and the club had to apply for re-election after finishing bottom of Division Two. The clubs total of 23 points would, however, have provided safety in either the previous season or the two seasons to follow as neither of the bottom two clubs from those seasons amassed more than 22 points. It wasn’t all gloom though, and a highlight of that first season was the Reserves, managed by Mick Molloy, winning the B.E.P. Cup at Clitheroe FC’s Shawbridge ground. Having been re-elected to the NWCL for the 1997/98 season, Hart started his plans to see Colne FC become a side to be reckoned with. The performances from his young squad were excellent but the results did not follow as expected and the club finished 18th with 31 points. The clubs third season saw them finish 16th with 40 points in a very tough campaign, which saw eighth position to seventeenth position split only by ten points. The club also saw its first cup victories and reached the League Challenge Cup 2nd round, losing 1-0 at First Division Prescot Cables (who went on to appear in the final) and also the second round of the Division Two Trophy, losing 2-5 at home to Abbey Hey. The clubs fourth season was eagerly awaited but in September 2000 manager Denzil Hart left the club by mutual agreement. Player John Lister was asked to take temporary control of team affairs and club captain Gary Halton was made his assistant. A month later Lister’s appointment was made permanent. It was a difficult seven months for Lister, changes in the team and some young inexperienced players meant that despite a number of goals for Lee Colridge, the club had to settle for second from bottom. However, Lister learned lessons from that campaign and the young players gained experience. In 2001/02 Colne ended the season with their highest ever League position of 14th and it seemed the crop of local youngsters along with a few more experienced players had finally turned the fortunes of Colne FC. In the summer of 2002, James Webster took control of the club to become the youngest Chairman in the League at 24. Webster was a player at the club with plenty of experience and had a strong desire to see the current Colne side emulate the success of their predecessors It wasn’t only on the pitch that results improved as the club embarked on ground improvements with an eye to the future, ensuring that when the time came they would be able to take their place in Division One without any grading problems. 2002/03 season started well enough, but in December 2002 John Lister resigned as manager. Webster, along with player Andy Lawson took temporary charge of team affairs, during which time goalkeeper Ross Baxter won the NWCL “Safe Hands” award. Paul Lynch took over as manager and




improvements in performances continued, but in August 2003 he left to take over at Rossendale United. The Colne committee responded immediately by appointing Nigel Coates as the new manager and he took Gary Rishton as his assistant. Nigel had played for the Dynamoes team, and had experience of management at near neighbours Nelson. Such was the impact of Nigel’s arrival as manager, that he immediately won the September Manager of the Month award, a feat he repeated in November and April. 2003/04 brought back the glory days to Colne with a string of successes. In the League Colne had to play catch up after successful cup runs, but ended the season ten points clear, scoring 102 goals in their 38 games. The completed the “double” by winning the Division Two Trophy 1-0 over Great Harwood Town, Added to that, Carl Howarth was the top goalscorer in the whole NWCL, whilst in April, Nigel Coates won Manager of the Month award, Scott Gizon won “Player of the Month” and Ross Baxter took the “Safe Hands” award. The season was capped by an amazing run in the FA Vase which saw them reach the semi-finals before bowing out 4-3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury. Season 2004/5 saw Colne start off well in the NWCL First Division but run out of steam and a poor run after the turn of the year saw them slide down the table to their eventual finishing position of 10th. The club again had a good run in the FA Vase going out to eventual winners Didcot Town in the 5th round. 2005/6 saw the side record their best ever finish in their short history winning 22 matches and ending the term in 9th place. Colne finished the 2006/7 season in 11th place. The however surpassed themselves during the following season when they were one of the surprise packages in Division One finishing in a club record 5th position meaning they have finished in the top half of the table in each of their four seasons in the top flight of the league. They club also unveiled plans to build a new Conference standard ground adjacent to the present Holt House Stadium. The 2008/09 season was not the best for the Holt House club and they struggled at the wrong end of the table. It took an excellent run of form in the final few months of the season to see them pull clear of the relegation zone and they finished in 18th position. The club has recognised the need to provide continuity and as such has begun a program of development, commencing with the first youth team who reached the final of the Blackburn league in 2003/04 season then becoming the reserve team competing in the NWCFL Reserve division for the last couple of years. Winning the Cup double in their first season and reaching the semi final of the Hospital Cup the following year. All the while steadily improving and at the same time providing new talent for the first team to harvest. Season 2009/10 started slowly with the team languishing 5th bottom of the Vodkat league at Xmas. However an amazing run of one league defeat in 2010 saw the Reds climb to finish a respectable 8th in the league with a very youthful squad. Season 2010/11 provided further improvements in the fortunes of the club. The first team had a successful season finishing in a creditable 5th place in the league and Colne will be looking to further enhance the clubs reputation this term. Season 2011/12 produced another consistent campaign with a creditable 8th position finish, given long term injuries to a number of key players. The year saw the emergence of a number of young players from the reserve team make their mark in the first team. The close season has seen the departure of a number of established players and manager Nigel Coates was busy in the close season in building a squad to be competitive in the division. Nigel has also beefed up his back room staff with the appointment of Andy Payton as Assistant Manager and Paul Fildes as player coach.

A Word from the Dugout . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for today's league challenge cup second round game against AFC Blackpool. Today's game is our 3third home game in seven days! Last sat we drew 2-2 against Alsager Town; a game which saw us leading 2-0 until we conceded two late goals. It was again a bitter pill to swallow after playing so well in the second half. We then moved on to Tuesday and an away game (at Edge Green Street) against Ashton Town in the Liverpool Senior Cup. The game finished 0-0 and we bowed out 4-3 on penalties. Again, I thought we controlled most of the game and were unlucky not to win the game in normal time but we need to start converting our chances if we are to progress in these sort of games. As a team we are looking organised and hard to break down, which is something we have been working really hard on. Now we have to push on and start scoring some goals and winning games. I am a firm believer in if we work hard results will start to go our way and also you need that little bit of l u c k a l o n g t h e w a y w h i c h a t t h e m i n u t e w e a r e n ' t g e t t i n g . Today's game will be a tough encounter Blackpool will be looking to bounce back from a 5-0 league defeat at Colne last weekend. I hope everyone enjoys today's game and has a safe journey home. A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division game against our visitors from Colne FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own supporters are treated to an entertaining game. We have to go back to late October since we were last at home with the weather playing havoc as we have lost ten games through postponements - seven of the at home during November and December. In fact we have played only five games in over two months which has been frustrating for everyone. Our most ‘recent’ fixtures have shown significant improvements on the pitch with narrow losses against Maine Road and Stockport Sports (both 2-1 away from home). In both instances we deserved a share of the spoils and although our loss at Stockport didn’t have the heartbreak of the last gasp goal we conceded at Brantingham Road there was still a sense of ‘what might have been’. Prior to this the lads had put in a good performance at Ashton Athletic and despite being reduced to ten men with almost half an hour of the game remaining we deserved three points but unfortunately had to settle for a solitary point which wasn’t enough to move us out of the relegation places. Unfortunately the stop-start nature of recent weeks have done nothing for the lads but many of the league’s clubs have also suffered similar frustrations so we must start to take advantage of the sizable number of games in hand with currently have over some teams. Our start to this season came at Colne where we recorded a 1-2 battling win with goals from Craig Fitzjohn and Ste Edwards. However our visitors are having a great campaign and currently handily placed in sixth place. Next Saturday (12th January) sees Town travel to Norton United before Glossop NE are our visitors a week later. Congratulations go to the St Helens Town Juniors who were announced as the winners of the Football Pools Community Challenge prize - a £50k make-over of the club’s St Helens Cricket Club facilities - full story and pictures are elsewhere in today’s programme. Maine Road v St Helens Town . . . Another improved performance from St. Helens Town should have landed a share of the points at Brantingham Road on Saturday, but they went down to a 2-1 defeat to league leaders Maine Road in a repeat of last season’s result. Ste Edwards, Carl Osman and Chris Lomax, a new signing from Atherton LR, were outstanding for the visitors who were well worth a draw on a bitterly cold afternoon in Chorlton. They matched table-toppers Maine Road in every department. Osman found Edwards in space in the opening minutes but the experienced striker could not get enough power behind his shot to trouble home ‘keeper Hall. Five minutes later, new boy Lomax was narrowly wide with a bicycle kick before Town were called on to defend in numbers, as Kilheeney had a shot cleared off the line from a corner. Midway through the first half, Lomax had a powerful shot blocked by Maine Road’s Gresty, then Scott McNair let rip from 35 yards with Hall just hanging on to his effort. Carl Osman saw two good long-range chances go narrowly wide before Town keeper Lee Novak pulled off the save of the match from a powerful, glancing header by Bailey just before the half-time whistle sounded. Full value for the 0-0 scoreline at the interval, Town began the second half on the offensive as McNair went narrowly wide with a header. In the 53rd minute, Hall was fortunate to hold on to a great header by Edwards following a cross from Michael Sykes-Wright. On 66 minutes, with Town in the ascendancy, Lomax tried to find Edwards with a threatening cross, which Hall managed to intercept and then McNair set up Osman who was through on the keeper, but the ball skidded under the midfielder’s foot with the goal at his mercy. St. Helens finally got the goal their play so richly deserved on 69 minutes, when Phil Williams scored with a screamer from 25 yards into the top corner but hardly had the celebrations died down, when Maine Road levelled, substitute Chappell heading in from a corner. Cole Ashton replaced the tiring Osman on 73 minutes and Phil Williams nearly scored again, Hall saving at full stretch. With eight minutes remaining, Edwards went off and Adam Storey came on. Town still had chances, but Maine Road began to attack with more urgency and the writing was on the wall for St. Helens when Bentham blasted over the bar with the goal at his mercy. Novak pulled off another great blocking save following a pile-driver from Chappell on 87 minutes and Town looked set for a share of the spoils as the game went into added time. However, Town’s luck was to run out when five minutes into injury time and from another corner kick, Bentham found himself unmarked on the near post and he headed in to secure a 2-1 win to confirm Maine Road’s position as league leaders.

John Connelly 1938-2012 . . . John Connelly St. Helens Town, Burnley, Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers and Bury The club was saddened to hear of the passing of former player John Connelly, who died on Thursday, 24th October 2012 at the age of 74 years. Born at Clock Face on 18th July 1938, John was a member of the outstanding St. Theresa’s FC youth team which also produced John Quinn, who joined the professional ranks via St. Helens Town. John played only 4 games for Town, scoring one goal, before signing for Burnley in November 1956. A speedy right winger, he made his league debut in 1957 and went on to play 265 games for the Turf Moor club, scoring 105 goals, in a career during which the Clarets were League Champions in 1959/60 season. He was transferred to Manchester United in April 1964, starring for Matt Busby’s side on 113 occasions, netting 35 goals, before moving on to Blackburn Rovers in 1966, transferring to Bury in July 1970, where he finished his league career. John’s Town debut came in the 3-1 defeat by Burscough Reserves at Victoria Park on 29th September 1956. He scored his only Town goal on his first outing at Hoghton Road a week later against Leyland Motors in a 4-1 victory, he played again in the next match away to Rolls Royce (lost 2-1) before making his farewell appearance in the 5-2 home defeat to Prescot Cables Reserves on 20th October. He went on to earn 20 full England caps, scoring 7 goals, his last game being the 0-0 draw against Uruguay at Wembley which kicked off England’s victorious World Cup campaign. He was dropped by manager Alf Ramsey in favour of Alan Ball. After retiring from football, John Connelly ran a successful fish and chip business in the Burnley area and lived the remainder of his life in nearby Barrowford.

A Brief History of St Helens Town . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.

Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that

league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for

Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Town’s ground situation remains uncertain. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and a third season sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street has had to be arranged to cover their immediate future as negotiations with Saints continue.

St Helens Town Juniors . . . Some of Merseyside’s greatest football names congregated today at St Helens Town Junior Football Club to hand over a cheque of £50,000 from The Football Pools. Former Kop legends Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen & Roger Hunt were joined by former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall on behalf of The Football Pools to reward Steve Leather, Club Secretary of St Helens Town Junior FC, with the official cheque. Over the next 90 days, the club will be donning hard hats and picking up hammers as it races to give the clubhouse a makeover including building new and improving current changing rooms, toilets, showers for its members as well as creating much needed storage facilities. The planned improvements will not only benefit the club and its members, but the wider community who use the facility. Celebrating its 90th season in 2012/13, The Football Pools is the World’s oldest and most popular football gaming company and joined with Mirror Football in November to launch a UK wide search for two lucky football clubs to win a 90 day makeover costing up to £50,000. To enter, applicants stated clearly why they thought their club merited the £50,000 funding and demonstrated how this donation would be used for the good of the club. St Helens join Frome Town AFC in Somerset as the two winning clubs to have been selected by The Football Pools panelists Gordon Banks, Roger Hunt, Tony Green; Sportech Director of Corporate Affairs, Richard Boardley and StreetGames Chief Executive Jane Ashworth. Since its formation in 2006, St Helens Town Junior Football Club started with 3 mini soccer teams which has now evolved to having over 300 members across over 20 junior teams. In




. . . 90 Day Community Challenge this period the club has become one of the leading names in junior football and all through the hard work of over 30 qualified coaches. In 2012, St Helens Town Junior FC was awarded the Lancashire County Charter Standard Club of the Year Award. Stockport Sports 2-1 St Helens Town

St. Helens Town lost again on Saturday, going down

narrowly 2-1 at Stockport Sports, who were demoted

from Evostik League One North last season under

their former title of Woodley Sports. The only ‘full-

time’ club in the North West Counties League are

currently seventh in the table and beat Town 5-0 at

Edge Green Street in the reverse encounter in

September so, while St. Helens were disappointed

not to get a share of the points this time, their

performance was once again very encouraging.

Playing for the first time in their history on a 4G pitch

at Woodley Sports Centre, Town matched their

opponents in every department during a first half in

which chances were at a premium. St. Helens

began the game without regular goalkeeper Lee

Novak, but stand-in Ryan Taylor proved a more than

useful replacement. Carl Osman was also missing,

but Shaun Judge returned in midfield and Ste

Edwards in particular looked very lively and adapted

easily to the artificial surface. As early as the third

minute, Edwards had the ball in the back of the net,

following good work from the ubiquitous Phil

Williams, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

The Saxons responded well and, six minutes later,

the league’s joint top scorer John Marsden burst

clear but could only fire over the bar. Marsden,

however, was involved again on 15 minutes, when

his hopeful shot from the corner of the box found

Town defender Chris Williams off balance and the

hapless centre back could only watch as his

attempted clearance found the back of his own net

to put Stockport 1-0 ahead.

Town came close to equalising on 19 minutes when

Phil Williams crossed to Edwards, who narrowly

missed from a tight angle. The remainder of the first




. . . Match Report and Photos half became a midfield battle with no opportunities for

goals at either end but then, right on half-time, Town

were given a free kick near the corner flag. Judge

crossed and Sports’ defender Craig Flowers missed

the ball, but caught Chris Williams with an agricultural

lunge a yard out from goal and the referee was right

on the spot to award Town a penalty, which Judge

buried in the bottom corner to send Town in level at

the break.

The heavens opened as the teams left the field for the

half-time break and it rained incessantly throughout

the second half. Though both teams fought hard, the

game was spoiled as a spectacle. Indeed, it was like

being at sea. Consequently, defences were very

much on top and there were few chances at either

end. However, on 64 minutes, Taylor was called upon

to save a pile-driver from 25 yards from the boot of

Matthew Ward and immediately after that, Marsden

nipped in to score the winner courtesy of a slight

deflection at Taylor’s near post.

Try as they might, St. Helens could not find an

equaliser. Lee Crompton had perhaps the best

chance with five minutes remaining, when his long

distance effort from a free kick was saved easily by

Mark Pullman in the home goal.

Town find themselves one off the bottom of the table,

with only 3 wins from 17 games, but 16 of their

remaining 25 games are at home, including the crucial

match against bottom team Stone Dominoes at Edge

Green Street on Saturday. With a win in that game,

Town can start to look to challenge a number of teams

above them, most of whom have played several

matches more and if they continue to play as they

have for the last three weeks, fortunes will surely

improve.

Chris Reape is to leave the club by mutual agreement. Silsden AFC would like to put on record that we thank Chris for his commitment & hard work whilst being the First Team Manager & we wish him well in the future. An interim management team of Andy Geary & Paul Schofield will take up immediate responsibility for the First Team commencing with the New Year fixtures.




NWCF League News . . . AFC Blackpool are celebrating after being awarded a grant of £50,000 from the Budweiser Club Futures programme. The programme is a grant scheme for non-league clubs in steps 5–7 of the pyramid, funded by The FA Cup’s lead sponsor, Budweiser, and will give eight grants of £50,000 to clubs across the country per season over the next two years. Those grants aim to help clubs to become more financially sustainable by improving their facilities.

Projects that could be funded by the grants include everything from building conference facilities, improving any part of the clubhouse interior or exterior, and expanding the car park - anything that helps a club grow and play an even larger role in their local community. The club received the fantastic news that they had been one of the winners about ten days ago, and AFC Blackpool’s Karen Tebbutt explained the process that they went through to demonstrate why the club would be a worthy recipient of the grant. “We applied for the grant in October and found out we had won at the end of November. With the Budweiser grant being offered to clubs that wanted to regenerate their clubhouses and facilities for the benefit of the local community, we had to explain what we wanted the grant for and what it would do for us. “We wrote that we wanted the grant so that we could renovate the clubhouse, mend the roof from leaking, put in a new suspended ceiling, insulate and put in new lighting to help with energy costs. “We also explained we would completely strip everything out of the kitchen and main room and rebuild a new bar and a fully fitted functional stainless steel kitchen, put a new entrance porchway and extend both the mens and ladies toilets. “This would then enable us to advertise for functions and businesses as well as the local community to come and use the facilities and so the club could generate income to help us be able more sustainable.”
