FROM FR. MARTIN

About two weeks ago, I had the opportunity of celebrating with

our children from the Xavier School at the 8:30 Mass at the

Basilica for the first time. The sight of seeing so many children in

the Church; some serving as altar servers, some taking the

readings and the prayer of the faithful and others joyfully singing

in the choir for the Mass gave me an immense joy and hope that

we still have a future. What a blessing to have these children in

our communities! As I celebrated the Mass, there were a lot of

thoughts going through my mind: Do we really appreciate the

presence of these children as a gift to the Church and society?

How can we individually and collectively help these young ones

nurture the gift of faith and the life that they have in them that

was so bright in their eyes even as they participated in the

celebration? Certainly, we all have a role to play. We thank our

priests, deacons, teachers, catechists, parents and grand

parents, benefactors and benefactresses for the efforts we have

made and are still making in caring for these young ones. But we

still have more to do. We are far from arriving.

The formation and training of our children both in religious and

social values is not only a duty but a natural call that should

involve all of us. The future of our nation, the Church and our

communities depend on how much we invest in these children

both spiritually and physically. The values we inculcate in these

young ones today will remain with them for life. Proverbs 22:6

says, “Train the child the way he should go; even when he is old,

he will not depart from it.” Let us thank God continuously for the

gift of these precious children in our cluster parishes. And as we

do so, let us remember that it is our innate call and duty to

sustain them both spiritually and physically for the greater glory

of God. Blessings on all who are involved in the formation and

training of these young ones.

present. Sick children are to be anointed if they have sufficient use of

creed you will be invited forward for the laying on of hands and anoint-

ing of the forehead and hands.
