End of the School Year

Yet another great year is behind us

here at Saint Xavier School, and the

newsletter staff is ready to publish

our final newsletter of this school

year. We would like to thank everyone

for reading and enjoying our

newsletter. This year has been

wonderful and full of exciting things.

For example, we printed the first full

color yearbook in a long while.

Seminar specials were instated on

Tuesday and Thursday mornings and

were a huge success. We exceeded

our eighty thousand dollar goal at the

auction. The high school basketball

team got back into the swing of things

this season by winning a few games,

where the year before we didn’t win

any. This year, we also had a bunch of

new students joining our ranks. Next

year we hope that our new student

enrolment continues to grow, as more

new editions will take effect for the

2010-2011 school year. On behalf of

the entire Newsletter and Yearbook

staff, I wish the seniors Aaron Davis

and Jasmine Reed, a wonderful new

beginning. We hope all students, as

well as teachers, have a wonderful

summer, and we will see you all again

Earth Day and Going Green By Monique Nesbit & Dylan Moon

Most people don’t really look at why a day is dedicated to certain purpose. They just celebrate it without thinking about it; without the meaning these dedications would be all in vain. There is a reason April 22 is the start of Earth day, and it happened about forty years ago. In 1970, U.S Senator Gaylord

Nelson set up an environmental teach-in, a way to discus and debate about controversial topics, focused more towards developing awareness and appreciation for the earth’s environment. For this reason, we celebrate Earth Day. In honor of Earth Day, St. Xavier’s is going green. Meaning, they have started to push recycling more by getting bigger recycling bins outside that separate trash from recyclables and putting recycling bins inside the cafeteria for bottles and cans. St. Xavier’s is getting more serious about recycling and is doing a lot more to help clean the school up. Even in the teacher’s work area there is a

bin for teachers to recycle their used papers. Also, we are using less paper by e-mailing more informational memos. The newsletter staff is also using less paper by putting newer additions of the X-Report on the homepage for the school and e-mailing it to parents. Next year, each teacher is going to have a code to type in to the new printer that will keep track of how many sheets of paper the teacher uses. By becoming greener, St. Xavier helps the world's ongoing struggle to help preserve its natural resources.

St. Xavier Fourth Grade Class Attends Water Festival

Fourth grade students from St. Xavier Catholic School attended the 2010 Dickinson County Water Festival, April 22nd at Brown’s Park located south of Abilene. The festival is an environmental workshop that offers a diverse range of activities. It is designed to heighten students' awareness about water and other natural resource concerns, as well as define their role in helping to protect them.

The goals of the Dickinson County "Save A Drop" Water Festival are to: Provide education to students on

how to promote water quality at home, school, and in the community.

Provide information to these students to heighten awareness of best management practices for water conservation.

Provide hands-on learning activities to students.

Provide an overall understanding of how complex the conservation of water has become.

This festival is made possible with the generous partnership and support of many area businesses, agencies, and individuals.

We would like to thank everyone in the parish and community for the incredible support of our 24th annual St. Xavier School auction. Everyone made a huge difference for St. Xavier School by helping us raise more than $86,700. We were overwhelmed once again by the generosity of our parishioners, parents, businesses, community members and all of the people involved. For this, we are truly thankful. We had more than 326 people present at the auction who were bidding on the great items made available by various individuals and businesses in this wonderful community. Congratulations to the winners of the raffle: Norma Figueroa - $1000, Matthew Gfeller - $500, Carr/McKinney Family - $250, and Terri Weisner Dalquest ('61) - $100. We hope that everyone was properly acknowledged in our auction book and addendum. If for some reason you were not, please accept our sincere apology. Dorothy Bramlage Public Library recently announced the winners of their annual "Design

a Bookmark" contest. Among the winning entries were three students from St. Xavier

Catholic School. Students were presented with framed copies of their bookmarks by Patty

Collins, Dorothy Bramlage Public Library Children's Librarian. In addition, students'

bookmarks were printed and will be distributed by the library during their summer reading

program.

On Thursday, May 13th, Students K-12 went to an assembly in the gym to listen to the St. Xavier Stringers perform. In

addition to the St. Xavier students who played, we also had guests from Green, KS. The Green students invited our

stringers to perform last week, so we returned the favor and had them play for St. Xavier this week.

The 4th graders reenacted two fractured fairy tales for the kindergarten, 1st grade, and sophomore students this week.

Fractured fairy tales are the remakes of an original fairy tale. After going to the Great Plains Theater and seeing that it doesn't take much for costumes or sets, the class decided they could do their

own play. After reading several of the stories, the 4th graders decided they wanted to act them out. They acted out True Story of

the Three Little Pigs and Big Foot Cinderella.

Our Shining Night By Jeong woo Kim

Prom was held up in the school assembly room. This

year, there was not a dinner for 12th grade because

we only have one senior.

We held the 2010 prom on May 8. Some juniors and

sophomores set up our prom the night before.

It was in the assembly room, and we set up for a

long time. We started at 3’o clock and we finished

setting up around nine. There were almost 35

people helping. It was really hard but fun. Ellie

Mendoza-Morales’s parents brought pizza for us,

and they worked on prom decorations as well. We were really thankful. This year’s prom title was

Shining Night, so we used a lot of lights and made many stars.

Finally, we held prom on Saturday. Prom entrance fee was only six dollars. Almost 40 people came to

prom, we got a really good DJ and some food. It started at 8 pm and finished at 12 pm. It was really

bright. All the students dressed up nicely. This year, we had many couples at the prom.

We finished the prom, and then the clean up was on Sunday from 1pm-3pm.

Gabby Wichgers, a small girl with an unrelenting spirit, was sponsored by Make-a-Wish Foundation to go to Orlando, Florida to stay at a place just for kids. Give Kids the World Village is every child’s dreamland; it’s as if Candy Land came to life. It’s a volunteer service with houses so the families that visit have a place to stay. People from all

over come and volunteer their time. Volunteers help by serving in the Gingerbread House; it’s the place the families and the volunteers come to eat three times a day. They can also help in the Ice Cream Palace, where ice cream could be served at nearly any time of the day, and since it’s sponsored by Make-a-Wish everything is free. We were allowed to do many things, there was so much to do we didn't have enough time to fit in all of the parks we were allowed to go to. The Village gave us a pass to use in any of the theme parks that we went to. The pass allowed us to skip the

line for any of the rides, similar to the Fastpass which can be bought at Disney World. Of course we would wait about fifteen or more minutes but it was tons better than waiting a whole two hours for a ride that lasts ten minutes. Unlike the Fast pass we were able to skip the lines for the characters, and so we met tons of characters getting their signatures and pictures with them. The first day we went to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. We rode the ride that was closed the last time we were at Disney, Expedition Everest, and had tons of fun. The second day we went to Universal Studios. In the park, the rides were for tons of movies like Shrek and other older movies like E.T. They even had a section devoted to old cartoons like the

funnies found in newspapers and Woody Woodpecker. I can’t remember what Gabby's favorite ride was, but I know what her least favorite was, Jaws. She was absolutely scared; actually, all of the kids were scared when they saw the shark come out of the water for the first time. The look on their faces was priceless, and I was even startled a little bit.

For our third day, we went to Universal's Islands of Adventure. There were tons of rides geared to older kids, but Gabby was just big enough to ride them. We saw the X-Men and my dad told Cyclops of Gabby's condition. Cyclops then called one of the people in charge of the characters, and he lead us to a

certain spot and told us to wait there until he came back. After

what seemed like hours, we heard engines roaring. What was coming down the road was the X-men and Captain America driving four wheelers. Then they parked the four wheelers we were allowed to meet them. All together we met Captain America, Rouge, Storm, Wolverine, Spiderman, and Cyclops. Gabby loved it, and I

was elated to see them.

Our fourth day, we went to Disney's Magic Kingdom, it was really starting to heat up that day, and the place was super packed. So, we decided to quickly do the things we wanted to do and head home and swim. The part I loved in Magic Kingdom was being able to ride Space Mountain. It’s a

super fast ride in the dark with many dips and turns; it looks like there are stars as if you were journeying through space.

When we got home we weren’t able to go swimming because Santa visited that day and took pictures with families. Kids of the family were allowed to pick out gifts, and I chose Jenga. There were many families

and stories around, and we really got to know a bunch of

them. It’s really great to know there are organizations out there like Make-a-Wish and Give Kids the World Village, and people who would give their time to really make the kids enjoy life.
