A Letter of Reflection…. Page 2 February 16, 2014

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Lect. 76: Sirach 15:15‐20 / Psalm 119:1‐2, 4‐5, 17‐18, 33‐34 / Corinthians 2:6‐10 /  Matthew 5:17‐37 or 5:20‐22a, 27‐28, 33‐34a, 37

Reflecting on God’s Word

We live in a country where we prize our freedom, cling to our right to choose and even de-fine our homeland as “the land of the free.” Today’s scriptures remind us that along with rights come responsibilities. We are to respond to our God who made us and calls us to be a people of the new covenant, ratified by the saving death of God’s Son on the cross.

“If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you,” says Ben Sira (Sirach 15:15). For the Jewish people the law was a blessing and those who chose to keep the law would be blessed with life. That choice is still before us today.

Jesus’ teachings reveal his wisdom in understanding the law of the Mosaic covenant. His grasp of what was at the heart of the law can be clearly found in the long form of today’s Gospel. While there is an option for a shorter version, spend some time with the longer reading (Matthew 5:17–37).

We are to live as kin in what has been called the “kin-dom” of God. In a world that justifies preventative strikes, Jesus forbids not only killing but even getting angry and bearing a grudge. He teaches that reconciliation takes priority over worship, that the prohibition against adultery extends even to looking with lust at another, reducing a person to an object for self-gratification. Finally, he asks us not to swear but to speak with simplicity and integrity.

Some might dismiss all this as impossible to achieve. But, as a young virgin was once told: “[N]othing will be impossible for God” (Luke 1:37).

Shhh… a Silent Retreat…

Save the date for our Women’s Annual Silent Re-treat on the weekend of March 7-9, 2014. Never been? Lent is a wonderful time to reflect on God’s messages. The Carmelite friars feed us spiritually; the nuns provide us wonderful meals. Posted at each exit and downstairs in the Perpetual Eucharistic Ado-ration Chapel are the brochures with pictures and details of El Carmelo Retreat House. Contact Fay Fletcher (951) 682-9076, or Dalia Lord (951) 684-2071 to make your reservations.

Eucharistic Notes from Your SFDS Perpetual Adoration Chapel

Since exercise, eating, sleeping, work and prayer life are mostly accomplished by habit, it’s important for healthy living to develop good habits. Good habits of daily prayer, frequent confession & com-munion speed us to spiritual maturity. Committing to a weekly hour of visits to our Perpetual Adoration Chapel is one of the most powerful and fruitful spiri-tual habits. You are invited. He is awaiting your visit. Please sign the Adorer Schedule Visitors page. The times and days Adorers are especially needed are posted on the bulletin boards or pick your favor-ite hour/day by looking at the pages & contacting the Coordinator listed at the bottom of the page. There should be two regular Adorers listed for each hour of each 24-hour day.

Healing After Loss - Grief Support Group

“We Honor the dead by Helping the Living”

A 5-week program will be given to help those peo-ple who have lost a loved one to death in helping you work through the grieving process. The pro-gram is on 5 Wednesday evenings beginning March 12th and continuing through April 9th at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, from 6:00-8:00 PM. If you are interested in meeting with this group, contact Valerie Doran at St. Thomas Church (951) 689-1131. A one-time donation of $33.00 is requested to cover the cost of handout materials.

JESUS AND THE LAW

In today’s continuation of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses the relationship between the current interpretation of the law of Moses and his own. He insists that he has come to fulfill, not abolish the law. Jesus is explicit here. He repeats the phrase, “You have heard . . .” with the counterpoint, “But I say . . .” He will not settle for mere avoidance of out-right murder or adultery or lying. He goes to the source of murder - hatred, resentment, spite. He in-sists on chaste living. He overrules the one-sided loopholes that allow men to divorce women, a law based on the view of women as property. He disallows all the means that people employ to play fast and loose with marriage. His words urge mutual fidelity. His listeners and followers are to honor the law wholly and not minimally. The consequences of fail-ure are clear and severe. The smallest are watching. They are those rendered powerless by age or igno-rance or circumstance. These little ones depend on the word and action of the mature and knowledge-able and they are not to be betrayed.
