From the desk of Father James

Thankfully after all that snow, some good old Oregon rain came and melted it away. Hopefully we will resume the normal Oregon winter wetness. While the rain may not be everyone’s cup of tea, at least it is something that we are a bit more familiar with. On Monday of this past week, I was at home and I came across a Facebook post from someone at the parish where I was a Deacon. She had lost her husband last year to cancer and Monday was his birthday. They were very close and she is still mourning his loss. She also is facing an upcoming surgery and was in a great deal of pain. She was picking up a few things in the grocery store and there happened to be two young men behind her, each with just a few items. She offered to each of them that they could go ahead of her. Only one took her up on the offer. When she reached the checker after the young man had finished ahead of her, the clerk gave her $50 that the man had left for her in thanks for letting him go ahead. She mentioned that she thanked God for that young man and prayed that he would somehow know that he had made such an impact on this elderly lady’s day. It was as if her own husband had been watching over her. Maybe he was. I share this story because it shows us a very real and concrete way that we can affect other people each day when we do kind deeds such as leaving $50 for an old lady that let us cut ahead in line so that we can go about our busy day. I know we can’t all afford to be giving away $50 every time we go to the store. But how much does it cost to smile at someone as they pass us by as we are going into the store. How can you change the life of another this week by sharing God’s goodness and His love in a very concrete way? Additionally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank those that helped to make our sidewalks and parking a little less treacherous last weekend. We were able to have all of our Masses and I don’t believe there were any falls or accidents (at least at the time of this writing). I also want to share with you that The School Advisory Council is starting to plan for the 2017-18 school year. In the com-ing week a team of school parents will be calling parishioners who have school aged children to tell you a little about their school experience and invite you to the upcoming Open House on January 29 after the 10:30 am Mass. Please take a few minutes and listen to why they believe a Christ-centered education, in a safe caring environment, is an integral part of their children’s development. Also, I want to extend the invitation to the school’s Open House to all the parishioners here at St. Francis. So many of you have supported our school so much during the building of the school; and the gym and library. Yet I know not every-one has had the opportunity to check the school out. Please come by and see what great things that we are able to do here at St. Francis and the Light of Christ that is able to be fostered to burn so brightly within each of our students.

In the Spirit of St. Francis…

The Catholic Bishops in the United States have declared Monday, January 23 as a day of Prayer and Penance for Life (because January 22 falls on a Sunday). They want this designated day to be observed by penance for violations of the dignity of the human person through abortion, and prayer for a restoration of the right to life for all people. They encourage everyone, if possible, to attend Holy Mass and to offer prayers and acts of pen-ance on this tragic 44th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision. Sunday, January 22 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 679 “Today we are suffering from a crisis which is not only about the just manage-ment of economic resources, but also about concern for human resources, for the needs of our brothers and sis-ters living in extreme poverty, and especially for the many children in our world lacking adequate education, health care and nutrition.” Pope Francis
