From the desk of Father James This past Monday, we celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This day brought us to the conclusion of the Christmas season. This year our Christmas season seemed to be cut short. We did not have the usual weekend celebrations of the Feast of the Holy Family, nor did the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord fall on Sunday this year. Yes, these days and the other liturgical celebrations that have taken place since Christmas still revealed to us who this Christ child is and the man that he is going to grow up to be. We encounter John the Baptist in our Gospel that we have on this Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. We also have returned to the season of green. John plays an important role for us in that he points to one that is coming after him. Jesus is the one that has been chosen by God from before time began to bring salvation to the nations. On the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we see that Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist. Why? Isn’t he the Son of God? Why does he need to be baptized? While others are baptized to have their bodies cleansed, Jesus is baptized for a different reason. He is baptized so that it be revealed to us, that He is the one beloved by God. It is through His baptism in the Jordan, all the waters of baptism have been made holy for the rest of time. The result is that those that respond to God’s invitation to have their sins washed away, can have this holy water poured over them, their souls cleansed and their sins forgiven. As we conclude the busy time of Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas, these days have been so busy for many of us and may now even seem to have taken place so long ago. Let us use these early days of this sea-son of Ordinary Time to reflect on the blessings that we have experienced and give thanks. Let us also look at the ways that maybe we didn’t live up to the true meaning of the season and carry out our baptismal prom-ises as well as we should have and resolve once again to do better. Follow the path and example that Jesus sets out for us and follow the light of the star that always leads us to him. Additionally, this week, the Knights of Columbus are hosting our 10:30 AM Sunday Mass. Knights of Co-lumbus is a fraternal organization that offers the men of our parish, the opportunity to make a real difference. There are many benefits to being a member of this group and I would really encourage the men of our parish that are not currently Knights to take a few moments to check them out and see what they are all about. The Knights here at St. Francis are involved in far more than just putting on our monthly pancake breakfasts. Men, why don’t you take a few minutes this weekend to check them out and consider joining this awesome group that does so much for our parish and our local community!

Fraud Prevention - Protecting Older Adults

Thursday, February 2, 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm Sherwood Police Department, Community Room 20495 SW Borchers Drive Sherwood, OR Faith in Action and Elders in Action are offering a free class in collaboration with the Oregon Attorney General's Office. This class looks at common types of fraud com-mitted against older adults, warning signs of fraudulent behavior, and how older adults can protect themselves against fraud. Strong For Life Classes: Volunteers needed!

Are you interested in helping seniors maintain health, bal-ance, strength and stability? St. Francis is hoping to host Strong For Life classes, in conjunction with Providence Medical Center, and are looking for volunteers to help teach the class. This class is offered free to any adult age 60 and over in our community. Our target time and days would be Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the mid to late morning. Training and support is provided by Provi-dence. Please contact Jennifer Mirek in the parish office to talk further about this wonderful opportunity to support our community's seniors with fellowship and healthy life skills.

The Catholic Bishops in the United States have declared Monday, Janu-ary 23 as a day of Prayer and Penance for Life (because January 22 falls on a Sunday). They want this designated day to be observed by penance for violations of the dignity of the human person through abortion, and prayer for a restoration of the right to life for all people. They encourage every-one, if possible, to attend Holy Mass and to offer prayers and acts of penance on this tragic 44th anni-versary of the Roe vs. Wade decision.
