way you each supported the Lombardo family and one another through this very sad time. The Pre-Primary families are now busily making some lovely keepsakes, which will be presented to Trish and Tony early next term. A huge thank you to our PP families for continuing to visit and extend the hand of friendship to this beautiful family over

time - this is very special indeed and a wonderful example of what being part of a caring Catholic community is really all about.

UPGRADE TO OUR UNDERCOVER AREA

The School Board has been busy in recent months preparing the financial and logistical decisions leading up to our new capital works project - the renovation to our existing undercover area. Council approval is currently being sought and work is hoping to commence by the start of Term 4. This project should be finished and ready by the commencement of Term 1 2017 all going well. An exciting step forward!

KZ SPEECH AND OT SERVICE As you will be aware, KZ Speech have been working here in our school for nearly two years now. Upon enrolment, families understand that a Speech and OT screen is a compulsory part of our early intervention strategy here at St Emilie’s. This wonderful service to families, means that those children who are flagged as requiring important speech and/or OT support, are being identified early. The earlier the intervention, the better the learning outcomes for children. The fact that the service can be run from our school is such a bonus for families - less disruption, less cost. This year the KZ team also gave parents a free opportunity to meet with them individually, to discuss their child’s screening report. Teachers and the KZ team work closely to ensure that the targeted areas of need are also being reinforced back in the classroom which is greatly beneficial for all involved.P&F SAUSAGE SIZZLERS Above: Angeline, our KZ OT and Kathy Ziatas,

Above and right: Many, many thanks to families who have helped out at P&F Bunnings Sausage Sizzles throughout the semester and on the weekend’s election sausage sizzle - your wonderful support continues to help us raise money that will go towards the renovation of our undercover area. Thanks also to families who made cakes and slices for the Election sausage sizzle - they sold really well and were absolutely delicious (we’re told!) :)

Above: Tracy Aroozoo, Maria Harvey (Support teachers) Christine Pittman(CEWA consultant) and Hamish Valen-tine (CEWA Principal School Advisor) meeting with Stu-art Munro and myself to discuss our Strategic Plan and Annual Improvement Plan earlier in the term. Hamish and Christine will lead our first PD day next term, to as-sist us to unpack our whole school Cultural Data Survey results.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT We have now received our Cultural Survey data. On our PD day on the first day of Term 3 we will examine this data which was gleaned from staff, students, Board members and families earlier in the term. The PD will be facilitated by Hamish Valentine (pictured right) who has a long standing relationship with St Emilie’s leadership team and staff. Like all Catholic schools, St Emilie’s is on a continuous journey of self-improvement and this type of data is very helpful when it comes to gauging perceptions and creating goals leading into the future. To all those families who provided feedback via the survey, many thanks. Later in Term 3 the community will be informed of a summary of this data.

HEALTH INCURSION Each year students have valuable opportunities to learn through both incursions (guest speakers coming into our school) and excursions (students going offsite to access a learning opportunity or experience). One of the incursions Years 1-6 students accessed this term was a visit from a former West Coast Eagles player and the Eagles mascot, Rick the Rock. The importance of good nutrition, being a good sport, the importance of acting with integrity and respect were all reinforced.

Right: The St Emilie’s School footy team came home victorious in the recent regional schools Eagles Cup competition.

A huge thank you to the parents who coached the boys and sup-ported staff and students throughout the term.

Likewise, to all the parents and staff who supported the other teams throughout the competi-tion - thank you so much.. Staff could not speak too highly of the sportsmanship that all students showed throughout all sports played. As a school, while we certainly aim to win when we play sports, we value and celebrate more, the effort and the positive attitude our students bring to competi-tions such as these.

Good Afternoon Tania,

Just a quick email to let you know about our school soccer team. I had the privilege of watching every game of the soc-cer team this year, this is so i could test Josh and keep dia-betes playing nice so he could participate.  I must say what a great job ALL the kids did.  As you know they did not win one game. However the resilience of these kids every week turn-ing up with a smile on their face and the positive attitude was fantastic to see.  They never gave up. At the beginning of their season they were losing by huge numbers. By the time inter school came along they were playing so well that they gave all the other teams some good competition. Some scores were 3-1 and, in what i see as a victory,  we even had a drawn game with a score of 1-1.Rachel had no fear tackling the opposite team, which was al-ways boys, to get the ball. Xander was great as a goalie.  Not one child shined brighter than the other, every individual on the team worked their hardest and to the best of their ability. The teamwork and encouragement they gave each other was outstanding. Mr Naden was great giving them on field en-couragement and placing each team member where they would work best.

We should be all very proud of them. I only see them as win-ners. Kind Regards,Mandy Wallington

Below: A wonderful parent email that celebrates the qualities we all value in our students - grit, determination, resilience, a positive attitude, and good team work. Thank you for going to the effort of sending this Mandy!

SCHOOL CARPARK Left: Glenn Cogger is pictured here recapping the pavers on the low wall that borders the drive in area, just past the chain (on the entrance into our school.)

Unfortunately this is the third time that an incoming car has driven into the entrance capping, damaging the limestone wall. We suspect this is happening from weekend cars attending Mass and making an ‘against the traffic flow’ u-turn from the car park into the drive through, however we are not 100% certain of this. We have therefore now placed a white post at the end of this low wall as a more visible warning that the wall is there and hopefully this reminder will raise awareness. This is also a good opportunity to remind our whole community to please drive SLOWLY and CAREFULLY into, and through the carpark at all times. Families are asked to particularly make the time to teach/remind grandparents of how to use the drive through correctly at drop off time. We really rely on the goodwill and cooperation of each and every family to use the ‘set down’ car bays correctly. On entry to the carpark, you are required to drive your car to the furthest car bay (church end) regardless of weather conditions and regardless of the amount of cars behind you at the time. This simple practice ultimately avoids a line of cars queuing out on Amherst Road. Thank you for your cooperation -it is so important.

SCHOOL ARRIVAL TIME Parents are reminded that children are not to be dropped to school before 8.30am, which is the time classroom doors open and supervision begins.

We are aware that some students have a music lesson before school, however they are not to be dropped at school any earlier than it takes for them to walk directly to their lesson and commence.

Choir students commence at 8.00am each Wednesday morning. Again, they are not to be dropped at school any earlier than 8.00am.

When early morning cross country training has been offered, students are to be dropped to school at the advertised start time. Parents are to wait with their child in the car until the teacher/s arrive to take the session.

Families are reminded that before and after school OSHCLUB is a service for any parents who need support with child minding before or after school.

AFTER SCHOOL A reminder that during after school hours all children must be supervised by a parent and that playground equipment is out of bounds at all times.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

As we come to the end of Semester One, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you and your family for the vital role you play within our Catholic Education community in Western Australia. For those of you who have joined us this year, I extend an especially warm welcome.

Some of you may have heard about the 2016 National Catholic Education Commission (NCEC) Conference which was hosted by Catholic Education Western Australia recently in Perth. The conference, attended by more than 1,400 delegates from across Australia and the world, presented opportunities for many of our principals and teachers to contemplate a Catholic education system that provides new educational opportunities and ways of learn-ing.

It was truly wonderful and humbling to hear Honduran Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga speak of Catholic Education in Australia as one of the best Catholic school systems in the world. I am confident that this would not be the case without the hard work and dedication of our staff, or without the invaluable contribution from the parents, families and friends that make up our school communities.

This term was filled with countless stories of student achievement, innovative teaching and learning approaches, and inspiring community initiatives across our system of 163 schools. Witnessing the first Catholic School Youth Summit, with Year 10 and 11 students from across our state, reinforced the agility and re-sourcefulness of Catholic Education to reimagine learning in a complex youth envi-ronment. The opportunity to join hundreds of primary school students from across the Arch-diocese of Perth to support the 2016 Lifelink Day campaign launch encouraged me to re-flect on the role of our schools to grow com-passionate school communities, where Christian values flourish in the lives of our children. As the winter holiday begins, I hope you will have opportunities to spend time with your children, to have fun, and to continue learning with them and from them. I also hope it is a time for you to reflect on the great importance of your role as your child’s first educator. May you be encouraged by the words of Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga, in his address to the NCEC Conference, “To be an educator is to be joyful.” I wish your family a joy-filled win-ter break. Yours sincerely , Dr Tim McDonald.
