IV Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, 2021

We seem to be in between time, liturgically speaking. The Christmas season has become a fast-fading memory and Lent is drawing closer with each passing day. This Tuesday we celebrate the Feast of the Presen-tation, also known as Candlemas Day. It has been celebrated since the fourth century; its original name was the Feast of the Meeting. That is a reference to the gospel passage in which the Christ child is brought to the Temple and the Holy Family is met by Simeon, a man described as righteous and devout and the prophetess Anna. To call someone righteous is among the highest compliments that can be paid to anyone in Sacred Scripture. Joseph is identified as righteous. To be righteous means that the individual is in a proper relation-ship with God, self and others. At the end of the day, no matter how much money we have or how much prop-erty we accumulate those are the only three relationships any of us are ever going to have. It is important that those relationships are properly ordered. It is from this encounter that the Church has received the closing prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours, Night Prayer or Compline as it is called. The prayer is titled the Nunc Dimittis, from Simeon’s line:

Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word,

for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples:

a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.

The second meeting was with Anna, a prophetess who we are told prayed constantly in the Temple. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. The Feast of the Meeting is an occasion for us to reflect on the meetings we have. Sadly, so many of our meetings now take place virtually. We have to endure that reality for the time being until the Covid is set-tled and behind us. Think about the meetings that take place in your life. One beneficial approach to meetings would be that even though they are virtual, it would be a great blessing to make our meetings virtuous. Simeon was righteous. Anna was perpetually prayerful. Their meeting with the Holy Family was the culmination of a lifetime of waiting for Simeon and Anna. We have a meeting each Sunday at which we encounter God and each other. It is the gathering, in Greek the ecclesia, the Church. Marking each Sunday as the day of rest, the Sabbath, we can encounter God in and through the Eucharistic Celebration and in and through each other. Do we look to the other as sacred? Do we recognize those who are the others in our life as sacred or as an inconvenience? Do we see each our en-counters as an opportunity for Grace or something and someone to be endured? The reality is that our meet-ings, our encounters can be Graced moments. Martin Buber, the philosopher from the 20th century, famously asserted that we could look at relation-ships as either I and it or I and Thou. Relating as I to an “it” indicates a recognition of a separate existence but does little to bring someone into a relationship. To relate to another as “Thou” moves the existence into a rela-tionship which has endless possibilities. I confess I am not doing justice to Buber’s philosophical assertions. However, valuing the other as Thou and not reducing the other to it seems to address the dignity we all possess as children of God. The greatest relationship is, of course, with great Thou – the Triune God. Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

Family Promise Homeless Ministry

St. Cornelius volunteers support Family Promise, a non-profit which serves homeless families in southern Chester County. Before COVID, 40 plus St. Cornelius volunteers were actively involved in volunteering at a church site in Kennett Square, where the homeless families were pro-vided meals and overnight accommodations. Currently, the volunteers are providing funding for meals in line with their quarterly assignment. Family Promise is currently exploring ways to provide social services to families on a waiting list and living temporarily with relatives or friends. They no longer have their hotel benefactor, so Family Promise will be covering the costs of hotels. They are in need of donations. For questions; to make additional donations or become a vol-unteer, please contact Kathy Silvon at [email protected] or call 484-720-8214.

Eucharistic Adoration Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament flows from the sacrifice of the Mass and serves to

deepen our hunger for Communion with Christ and the rest of the Church.

Join us for Adoration on Friday mornings after Mass. You are welcome to visit any-

time during the day until we repose the Blessed Sacrament at 4:00 PM.

If a funeral is scheduled for a Friday, there will be NO exposition.

We have an upcoming retreat for healing after abortion. It is designed to help you experience the mercy and com-passion of God. It will help you focus on the buried emo-tions of the past and begin healing in a non-judgmental, safe, loving, and confidential environment. It will give you hope for your future and freedom from the pain with-in your heart and soul.

Post-Abortion Healing Retreat March 5 - 7, 2021

Malvern-Frazer, PA A Woman’s Testimony: I received great inner healing during my retreat. I recommend it to any-one suffering from abortion. I was able to forgive myself and found Christ’s unconditional love. A Man’s Testimony: For 18 years, I had been haunted by guilt that no one could take away. Through the retreat, I was able to forgive myself. God has given me a peaceful mind, cleansed my heart and washed away my guilt.

Our kindergarten class learned about different types of weath-er this week. The children did hands on activities to learn about rain and snow. They got to see up close how the water cycle works. Thanks Mrs. He-garty for making learning fun and sometimes messy!

All too often, Lord, we turn away from the world's many problems, which seem too big, too complex, or too far away. Forgive us our indifference. It is easier, Lord, to see only what is around us: our lives, our homes, our challenges. Forgive us our iso-lation. Help us to see with your eyes: eyes which notice one another and help us understand. Help us to dream your dream: of communities that reach out and dialogue and where diverse people creatively cooperate. Help us to be people of solidarity and action, so moved by prayer, encounter, and understanding that peace can become a reality. Amen.

The St . Cornel iu s Li terary Socie ty

The votes are in and the next book the St. Cornelius Liter-ary Society will explore is Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell. Drawing on Maggie O'Farrell's long-term fascination with the little-known story behind Shakespeare's most

enigmatic play, HAMNET is a lumi-nous portrait of a marriage, at its heart the loss of a beloved child. Warwickshire in the 1580s. Agnes is a woman as feared as she is sought after for her unusual gifts. She set-tles with her husband in Henley street, Stratford, and has three chil-dren: a daughter, Susanna, and then twins, Hamnet and Judith. The boy, Hamnet, dies in 1596, aged eleven. Four years or so later, the husband writes a play called Hamlet.

SNOW CLOS ING The safety of our parishioners and the children in the Learn-ing Center are of the utmost importance. Ice, sleet and snow can come at any time. During the week, Monday through Friday, if the Unionville Chadds Ford School Dis-trict or Garnet Valley School district has announced the closing of schools, or a two hour delay because of weather, the 7:30 AM Mass will not be celebrated. It takes a big undertaking to clear the parking lot and have the pathways shoveled. Closing the school or delaying the opening of the Learning Center allows our snow removal company to clean up the snow and restore our property to a safe and active place.

Catholic Social Teaching CST 101:

The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst

the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal,

conciliar, and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a

direct reading of these documents. Join us once again on Sunday, February 28, at 3:00 PM for our fourth of seven installments of Catholic Social Teaching by log-ging into our ZOOM meeting and join in the conversation. More information can be found on our website at

https://www.saintcornelius.org/catholic-relief-services

OPTION FOR THE POOR AND VULNERABLE

A basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred by deepening divisions between rich and poor, our tradition re-calls the story of the Last Judg-ment (Mt 25:31-46) and in-structs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.
