Holy Week is the final week before Easter, beginning on Passion (Palm) Sunday and ending on Holy Saturday night. Holy Week probably developed in the 4th century, in Jerusalem. Christians from all over the world would make pilgrimage, and the Church in Jerusalem would provide rites and worship dedicated to the final events of the life of Christ. It eventually spread to the whole world. The final three days of Holy Week are part of the Paschal Triduum. Passion (Palm) Sunday We commemorate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Mass includes blessing of the palm branches and the reading of the Passion. Holy Tuesday - The Archdiocese of New York transfers the Chrism Mass from Holy Thursday to today at 4:00pm at the Cathedral. The Holy Oils used in the Sacraments are blessed and priests renew their commitment to Christ. Holy (Spy) Wednesday: Spy Wednesday is the unusual name now connected with Holy Wednesday. We remember Judas’ agreement to hand over Jesus. We realize that we are capable of doing the same thing. Holy Thursday It is also known as “Maundy” Thursday, which comes from Jesus’ mandate to love one another. This is symbolized in the washing of the feet. We also celebrate the Institution of the Eucharist and of the Holy Orders. Mass ends with a Procession to the Repository for prayer and adoration until midnight. Good Friday A Day of Fasting and Abstinence from meat. We commemorate the Death and Crucifixion of Jesus. Our prayer includes the reading of the Passion according to St. John, the Veneration of the Cross and Communion from the reserved Hosts consecrated on Holy Thursday. Holy Saturday We wait in expectation of the Resurrection. The Great Vigil of Easter includes the singing of the Exultet, the return of the Alleluia, Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations and Professions of Faith. Easter Sunday We celebrate with joy the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead!

Join us in the New Year for the second half of Symbolon and explore how to fully live your Catholic faith. During each monthly session, we'll show a half hour DVD followed by a discussion. For the month of April, we will discuss the Mass. “The Lord be with you… And with your spirit.. .Thanks be to God.” We might be familiar with the various prayers of the Mass, but do we understand the meaning, beauty and power of all we say and do in the liturgy? All are welcome! We will meet on Friday evenings in April in Rm 11 immediately following Stations of the Cross. April 28: Penance and Anointing of the Sick June 2: Matrimony & Holy Order

25TH ANNIVERSARY NEWS

Our Church was, for many years, a Mission of St. Denis Parish. In 1992, John Cardinal O’Connor split the Parish of St. Denis and created the new Parish of St. Columba. We will celebrate our 25th Anniversary in 2017. Here are some of our plans: Dinner Dance Committee We are planning a 25th Anniversary Dance to be held at Cristo’s on Friday, October 27, 2017. Barbara Falcone is the Chair of this committee. We are also planning for a Dinner Dance Anniversary Journal. Church Restoration Committee Eric Winogradoff is the Chair of this committee. We are studying our church and preparing recommendations for repair and renewal. Father Michael and Eric recently met with Brian Baker, a Liturgical Consultant. His company has renewed many churches. Presently they are working on the Cathedral of Boston and St. Joseph’s Church in Millbrook. Soon we hope to present our ideas to the parish for discussion. Photo Journal We are working together with Lifetouch to create a 25th Anniversary Photo Journal. It will include pictures of our parish ministries and programs as well as an advertising section. We invite our parishioners to consider signing up for a photo session to be held in May & June. Photo sessions will be held in the school. Each family or individual will receive a free 8x10portrait and a free Photo Journal. Please sign up today at Member Site: https://booknow-lifetouch.appointment-plus.com/9r9s3j7v After Easter, you will also have the opportunity to sign up after Masses. For more information, call the Parish Office. Chair of Lifetouch/Family Portrait Committee Cindy Slade: [email protected] This group will coordinate the family photo sessions that will take place May 30 - June 11 and June 15 - 21. Would you like to help Cindy? Send her email. Chair of Parish Group Photos Carolyn Torella [email protected] This group will take pictures of all parish groups/organizations in April & May as well as parish activities. All Parish Ministries such as Lector’s, EM’s, Musicians, Ushers, Greeters, Cantors, etc. Please reserve this date for your group photos: Saturday, June 3rd at 9:00am! Anniversary Mass We are waiting to see if Cardinal Dolan can provide us with a date for our Anniversary Mass. We will keep you posted! Capital Campaign Each parish in the Archdiocese of New York will participate in the “Renew and Rebuild” Campaign over the next

three years. Our Campaign will begin in June 2017. It will coincide with our 25th Anniversary. The Restoration Committee is working to develop projects for your consideration. Right now, plans include new windows for the school, new signage, new kneelers in the church and new flooring in the church.

HOLY THURSDAY - APRIL 13TH PILGRIM VISIT TO SEVEN CATHOLIC CHURCHES

IN DUTCHESS COUNTY

A recommended practice for Lent is to go on a pilgrim. A Pilgrim Pamphlet Guide will be made available for those who wish to participate in the venerable custom of ‘visiting seven churches’ on Maundy (Holy) Thursday, April 13th. The evening Mass time at each Church, location of Altar Repose, and closing time are listed in the pamphlet. Also included in the pamphlet are Pope Francis’ intentions for April, and suggested verses to be prayed at each stop. Participants in the pilgrimage normally set out after attending the evening Mass of The Lord’s Supper at their home parish; they continue on the self directed pilgrimage to visit six more decorated Altars of Repose.
