Today’s text offers im- portant advice for Christians of every generation. God is first cited as the author of all gifts, and in particular, ref- erence is made to the gift of baptism by which we have been made the “first fruits” of the new creation. What follows is advice based on a very Jewish understanding of the “word” as an active force, operative in the world. We are reminded that unless we, too, be- come “doers” of the word, our claim to faith is empty. Today and in subsequent weeks the author reminds us that it is equally important to do the “works” of love, for example, by caring for the “orphans and widows in their affliction.” P ARISH REGISTRATION: We give a heartfelt welcome to all new parishioners. Registration forms

are available in the front vestibule and side entrances of the church and at the parish office during regular office hours In order that our priests better serve you, especially at the time of baptism, marriage, or a funeral, it is most helpful if you are registered and participating in our parish community.

B APTISM: If you are seeking baptism for your infant to 5 year old, we ask that at least one parent be

registered at St. Clare for six months prior to baptism. The parents are asked to attend a pre-baptism class. Please call the parish office to register for baptism and pre-baptism classes. BAUTIZOS: Pláticas son los dos últimos Miércoles del mes. Es necesario asistir a dos pláticas. No niños. Para información llama a Lupita & Luis Caceres (661) 360-8537.

H OSPITAL/HOME, HOLY COMMUNION, AND SICK VISITS: For Holy Communion, please contact the

parish office during office hours. A Priest or Eucharistic Minister will visit you and attend to your needs. In case of hospitalization, please inform the admissions office that you are Catholic, so that they will be able to notify us. In case of an emergency or death in the family, a priest can be reached 24 hours a day. Call the parish office number anytime for an emergency pager number.

M ARRIAGE: The bride and/or groom must be registered and actively participating in the parish

for at least three months. Then, a six-month preparation program is required. Please call the office for further information.

R ELIGIOUS EDUCATION: We offer religious education classes for children beginning with the

first grade and running through high school. For more information, contact the office of Religious Education at 252-6950.

Our parish has become so large, the only way we have of verifying Mass attendance is by use of Sunday envelopes. (This is significant when requiring services from the church i.e., baptism or marriage.)

Rachel’s Vineyard Weekend Retreat (for healing after abortion)

Rachel’s Vineyard is a safe place to renew, rebuild and redeem hearts broken by abortion. Weekend retreats offer a supportive, confidential and non-judgmental environment.

Rachel’s Vineyard facilitates an experience of God’s compassion on a profound level. It creates a place where you can share, often for the first time, your deep-est feeling about abortion. Troubling secrets are allowed to be dismantled in an environment of emotional healing and spirituality.

Rachel’s Vineyard is therapy for the soul. Participants who have been trapped in anger toward themselves or others, experience forgiveness. Peace is found. Lives are restored. A sense of hope is rediscovered.

For registration or more information please call: 866-272-2435 or www.rachelsvineyard.org

ARMED FORCES PRAYER MINISTRY (Please keep the following active military members, loved ones of our parishioners, in your prayers.)

From the Prayer of the Archdiocese for Military Services

Almighty God and Father, look with love upon our men and women in uniform and protect them in their time of need. Give them health and stability and allow them to return to their loved ones whole and unshaken. Be with their families and sustain them in these uncertain times. Hear us as we present our prayers to You through Christ our Lord. Amen

PARKING IN THE FIRE LANE HAS US SEEING RED! We have portions of the curbs in our parking lot painted red. This indicates a fire lane. Fr. Olin has pointed out to some people that parking in the fire lane is unlawful AND unsafe. Some of you have informed him that you have a handi-capped placard. Those placards are issued to allow those who are truly handicapped to park in spaces reserved for those who are handi-capped. You can also park next to a green painted curb. You CANNOT, however, park in the fire lane. So unless your handicapped placard is hanging from the rear view mirror of your fire truck, YOU CANNOT PARK IN THE RED!!!!!!

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time SAINT CLARE PARISH Page 9

Join us for a Pax Christi day of retreat and reflection on Gospel nonviolence and Christian peacemaking led by Fr. John Dear. In the morning, we will reflect on our life journey as peacemakers who follow the non-violent Jesus out of the culture of violence and war into the new life of peace and nonviolence. In the afternoon the focus will be on forgiving our enemies. Together we will explore the basics of Gospel non-violence and beginning of the Sermon on the Mount—the Beatitudes of Peace.

John Dear is an internationally recognized voice for peace and nonviolence. The author of 28 books on peace and nonviolence, John has traveled the war zones of the world, been arrested some 75 times for peace, led Nobel Peace prize winners to Iraq, given thousands of lectures on peace across the U.S., and served as a pastor of several churches in the desert of New Mexico. He writes a weekly column for “The National Catholic Reporter” at www.ncronline.org.
