Point for College Tree” last weekend,

gathering area. On Point is a local

nonprofit agency that opens the door

to higher education for low-income

youth who have a desire, and the will to continue their edu-

cation. Last year we filled 16 student backpacks with every-

To Reap What You Sow!

On May 2, 2010 a group of teens and adults from St. Cecilia’s planted 100 apple trees at the Matthew 25 Farm. The date was picked because it was thought that the weather would be cool and the ground soft enough to plant the orchard. That day in 2010 it was 92 degrees! It was probably the hardest work any of us had done, the trees had to be planted, staked and tied before we left. We all gathered around the last tree with the Pastor from Christ’s Chapel and we prayed. We prayed that these trees would someday produce fruit to be given to the pantries in the area. The next 5 years brought all sorts of hazards – deer that did a lot of damage, an early frost one year that killed many of the buds and some trees were just lost to the CNY climate. This past Wednesday morning, August 5th, the first crop of Pristine Apples ( a cross between Honey Crisp and Yellow Transparent) were harvested. We had 5 of the original group there that planted the trees—for us it was an emotional day. The Farm manager, Rick Rarick had promised to call me when they were ready and we brought 15 of us, many of our YIM members from St. Charles-St. Ann’s and friends from St. Cecilia’s to pick the trees. We picked 405 lbs. – we even had a guessing game as to who could estimate the total. I, of course, won with a guess of 395 pounds! We left the farm and drove to Assumption Food Pantry and next to St. Lucy’s Food Pantry. All of our YIM members came with us and got to see just had important these pantries are. Be-fore we left the Farm, we offered our prayer of thanksgiving to God for allowing us to help those in need. Rick talked to our group and said, “There are a lot of pantries out there and a lot of people in need. You can’t help them all but you can do your part to make a difference. Contin-ue to reach out to those in need no matter where you go in life. Every little thing you do can change the lives of those you meet.” That’s why we go to the Farm, that’s why we believe in what happens there. You can’t learn this lesson from a book, you can’t feed the world, but you can make a difference one step at a time. Thank you Matthew 25 Farm for all you do to feed those in need in CNY. May God continue to bless this Farm and

your commitment.
