A Jesús le debe haber requerido gran amor y confianza para hacer lo que el Padre le había enviado a hacer aquí en la tierra. De la misma manera, seguir una vida de corresponsabilidad requiere gran amor y confianza. Debemos estar dispuestos a rendirnos por completo a Dios, confiando en que Dios siempre nos dará todo lo que necesitamos para cumplir Su plan para nosotros.

PEOPLE OF THE COVENANT If there is one word that stands out in today’s read-ings, it is “covenant.” God’s faithfulness and goodness serve as examples to us of how to live. Genesis tells the story of Noah and of God’s covenant not only with all people, but with all of nature. Never will the cleansing waters of the flood bring their destructive power to all the earth again. The sign, the reminder to both God and nature, is the rainbow in the heavens. The psalm reminds us of this compassion of God, and begs God to remember us, not because of our good-ness, but because of God’s goodness and fidelity to the promise. February 18, 2018 1st Sunday of Lent “After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God….” - MARK 1:14 Do you ever think about how difficult it must have been for Jesus to come into Galilee, knowing that John had just been arrested for teaching the same message that Jesus was proclaiming. It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of stewardship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender completely to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Holy Father usually marks the solemn opening of the Lenten fast with a procession and Mass on Ash Wednesday evening. He walks from the Benedictine monastery, San Anselmo, down the Aventine hill to the Dominican monastery of Santa Sabina. This very old tradition was revived by Pope John XXIII in the late 1950s. Have you ever wondered who gives the pope his ashes? It’s the cardinal who has been given the “title” of the church of Santa Sabina. The pope’s homily at this Mass states his theme for Lent. Santa Sabina dates from the fifth century, and is one of the most beautiful churches in Rome. One of the pan-els on its main doors features the Crucifixion, a scene not normally depicted in art until much later. In the year 1219 the pope gave the church to Saint Dominic for his new religious order, the “Order of Preachers,” common-ly called the Dominicans, and it remains their world headquarters to this day. That pope, Honorius III, was a member of the Savelli family, and this church was their personal family chapel. Sabina was a wealthy Roman lady who became a Christian and was martyred, and whose home became a place of prayer. Later, the church built on that spot was dedicated to her memory. —Rev. Stations of the Cross Join us for Stations of the Cross, begin-ning Friday, February , 16 and held each Friday thru March 30. We will begin the evening at 6:30 pm with Stations of the Cross followed by Mass at 7:00 pm. We

will follow with a meatless meal, and we ask that eve-ryone who will attend bring a meatless dish to share. Fr. Martino will conclude the evening with the Lenten teaching; “Spring a Soul into Heaven”.

Penance Service The Lenten Penance Service will be held on Wednes-day, February 21, at 7:00 pm.

No class February 18 Faith Formation classes will not meet on February 18, since Effingham County schools are on winter break. Classes will resume February 25.

First Penance set for February 25 Second-graders will have First Penance on February 25 during regular class time.

First Communion is scheduled for the 5 pm Mass on Sat-urday, May 5, 2018, at St. Boniface.

There will be one more prayer check for First Commun-ion candidates. Please work with your child to ensure that she/he is prepared. Our traditional prayers are a time-honored part of our Catholic heritage and a diocesan re-quirement to receive the sacrament.

Sign of the Cross, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be were all required in first grade so the only new prayers are the Act of Contrition, Grace Before Meals and The Great Commandment.

Confirmation set for December 1 The Most Rev. Bishop Gregory Hartmayer, OFM, Conv., will be the celebrant at our Confirmation Mass on Satur-day, December 1, 2018, at 5 pm. Students who are now in eighth grade and have completed the two-year prepara-tion program are eligible to be confirmed.

FAST & ABSTINENCE Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. This applies to those ages 18 through age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. Abstinence from meat are binding on Catholics from age 14 onwards.
