Prayer in times of pestilence
Stella caeli exstirpavit
Quae lactavit Dominum
Mortis pestem quam plantavit
Primus parens hominum.
Ipsa Stella nunc dignetur
Sidera compescere,
Quorum bella plebem caedunt
Dirae mortis ulcere.
O gloriosa Stella Maris
A peste succurre nobis;
Audi nos, nam te Filius
Nihil negans honorat.
Salva nos Jesu pro quibus
Virgo mater te orat!
The Star of Heaven that nourished the Lord drove
away the plague of death which the first parents of
man brought into the world. May this bright Star
now vouchsafe to extinguish that foul constellation
whose battles have slain the people with the wound
of death.
O most pious Star of the Sea, preserve us from
pestilence; hear us, O Lady, for Thy Son honors Thee
by denying Thee nothing. Save us, O Jesus, for whom
Thy Virgin Mother supplicates Thee.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
I want to remind everyone that I will be going out of town next Monday, August
31st. I will be here for 9:00am Mass in the morning on the 31st and will be leaving soon
after. I will be back late on Friday, September 18th. During that time there will be no
9:00am daily Mass (Monday through Friday) here at St. Birgitta’s. If you would like
to go to daily Mass any of those days, please call St. Wenceslaus Church in Scappoose at
503-543-2110 to get on their list. Their daily Mass is also at 9:00am and they have plen-
ty of room for us to join them. Even though I will be away from the parish, I will continue
celebrating the Holy Mass each day for the intentions in our calendar (as printed in our
bulletin, which is available on our website). The weekend Masses will be celebrated by
Msgr. O’Connor and he knows that the intentions for those Masses are printed and left on
the altar.
While I am gone there will be no evening Latin Masses on weekdays. We will con-
tinue these when I return. Remember that I will only be gone for two weekends: Septem-
ber 5/6 and September 12/13. The reason I sent out Mass attendance lists for Septem-
ber 19/20 is because I will be arriving late on the 18th.
If you are not able to come to a Mass which you were emailed about, feel free to
email me through this Sunday, August 30th. I may be able to get someone to take your
spot. However, after Sunday if you know that you cannot come for a Mass, you are free
either to invite someone you know to take your spot or simply not to come. You do not
need to email me since I will be gone.
I will not be sending out weekly email messages while I am gone, but we will soon
be posting the bulletins for the next few weeks on the website. Even though the message
portion will be blank, you will still be able to see the upcoming Mass intentions and the
list of Mass readings.
On a completely different note, Peggy will soon start selling her famous jams here
at the church! She has at least six different varieties in 8oz jars. The cost is $2.50 per jar
and all proceeds go to the church. She will begin selling these jams two Sundays from
this Sunday and they will be available in the cry room. Thank you, Peggy!
I hope that everyone has a great couple of weeks. Even though I will be in Califor-
nia, you all will be in my prayers and Mass intentions. May God bless you all!
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Clifton
