This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. It marks the emergence of Jesus on the public scene after the many hidden years of his life. He is ritually, not sacramentally, ‘baptized’ by John the Baptist

and is anointed by the Holy Spirit from the Father in heaven for the purpose of fulfilling his mission of salvation. Jesus is symbolically baptized by John with all the people in order to show that he is fully in union with our brokenness and need. He does this even though he himself has no need of repentance. Jesus then follows the Spirit’s lead through his ministry all the way to the Cross, which culminates in his resurrection. Our life mirrors this in that our own call is to follow the Holy Spirit’s lead through our life of various crosses, to our own final cross, which please God, culminates in our resurrection. It is also to be a life of witness to others along the way of the living reality of God and his call to conversion and new life. Some of our High School students will be putting this call to witness into bold action next week as they join me in Washington D.C. for the annual March for Life. This March for the right to a full existence on behalf of the unborn is one of the largest and most moving in the nation. The March seeks to lift up the dignity and rights of the unborn among us and to remember the nearly 56 million unborn persons that have died since the passing of Roe v. Wade in 1973. This is a profoundly sad number. The March is a dignified witness of faith, witness and love as we solemnly move from the National Mall to the Supreme Court. Above the entrance to the Supreme Court is engraved in stone: “Equal Justice for All”, these words strike me particularly hard on this March. Social Justice begins in the womb and so our work for the poor and those in need must begin here also. Pray for us and for all moms, dads, grandparents, siblings and others who have suffered this great hurt and for their healing. If you have been wounded by abortion and desire healing, there is a national and local outreach called Project Rachel and they can be found online or by calling the diocese. There is also spiritual support, retreats, prayer and follow-up available to walk with anyone who is climbing out of this sadness. God is there to help too. There is healing and new hope, let me know if I can be of assistance confidentially. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

Listen to Fr. Mark’s homily on our website at: www.stbernardgb.org.

Dear Friends, Council 10243 of the KC’S here at St. Bernard is blessed in many ways. We are blessed to be part of a tremendous world organization that does countless works of mercy every day. This includes, in our neck of the woods, from helping with local charities like the Ecumenical Housing Project, House of Hope and the Golden House among many oth-ers. We are also part of the State KC Organization and are able to help with other needs. In the near past, for instance, we were able to make a donation to the Schweiner family in Denmark, who were in great need. This is essentially why we exist--to help in any way that we can. We also are part of a great gathering of men who practice Unity and Fraternalism as we carry out our everyday lives. Care to join us? We will be having an Information Night on Feb. 10, 2015 in the Multi-Purpose Room. We’d love to see you there.
