Parish Mission Statement

St. Barbara Parish carries on the faith tradition estab-lished in 1894 by our Slovenian and German ancestors. Like our founders, we are called by Baptism to live as ex-amples of Catholic faith and values, and as witnesses of Christ in the world. Our parish is small in size but great in heart. We are a diverse community who together seek to strengthen faith through liturgy and education, and through service to community in charity. We strive to love God with all our hearts and minds. We invite you to join us in celebration of God’s holy sacra-ments, to serve His One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, and to spread His Gospel, the Word of Jesus Christ.

Pray for the Sick

Pray for the sick of our parish, our family and friends, especially David Chabala, Geoff Skundrich, Nicholas Fratto, Michael Carolan, Karen Recrosio, Margaret Vallelunga, Gloria Fortunato, Edna Koczaja, John Pulford, Mary Ann Chabala, Maria Klemencic, Mary Rosato, Ann Mary Mazzocco, Lois Rosati, Kathy D’Amico, Sophie Kramzer, Catherine Petrich, Maureen Wirant, and those in nursing homes and their caregivers; the return of inactive members of our parish to the practice of their faith; the respect of all human life and the end of abortions. We pray for the safety of our troops, their safe return and for their families at home.

Call the rectory office if you are homebound or in a nursing home and would like to receive Communion or if you are a patient in a hospital and would like a visit from a priest, please call 412.221.5152.

On Mission: A New Pentecost - Come, Holy Spirit and fill us with your gift of Wonder and Awe in God’s Presence. May we never forget that our lives are made for what is eternal (heaven), not what will pass away (earth). May we always stand in amazement before God and the wonderful ways he is at work in our lives, the world and the Church. May we be free from sin to maintain our union with God and may we reflect His love as we are united with our brothers and sisters. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! inspire us to be open and trusting to the changes that await us and strengthen us to live our baptismal call of building up the Kingdom of God on earth. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to stay informed.

Now that Pentecost has descended upon us, have you given thought to the gifts that you have received? We are all called to do or be something……. As Vincentians (members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul), we strive to help the poor in our community. We follow Jesus’ di-rective to “go in pairs” and evaluate the needs of the per-sons who reach out to us. Sometimes it’s a chronic low income situation, other times it’s a sudden loss of employ-ment or medical emergency. Everyone is meet with the love of the Lord as we consider ways to best help them. Can you see yourself in this role of assisting others? We gather twice monthly to share friendship, prayer and then

discern the best possible course of ac-tion for our “clients”. Please consider joining us – call Nancy or Dick 412-220-2204. If you happen to be a person/family in need of help with rent, utilities, food, clothing, or medicine, please call Holy Child Parish Office 412 221-5213.

For your convenience and ultimately the needs of the poor, Holy Child Church now has 2 blue St. Vincent de Paul clothing bins in the back parking lot. You can use them for clothing, linens and shoes. Everything is put to good use. Excess clothing, not distributed to people in need, is sold at our local thrift stores or recycled. The proceeds are then used to help people with housing, food and utilities. Please DO NOT leave any items on the ground, the bins are emptied on a regular basis, so just come back in a couple days. Thank you for your support!

THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY The God of the universe is mysterious. Sci-ence has not been able to solve the mystery of how the universe came into being or explain exactly what continues to give it creative energy and masterful design. No religion asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable mystery of God, for no mat-ter what name we use, God always transcends our limited ability to understand. God is a mystery to be believed, not known. And yet, we Christians believe that our name for God best expresses that inexpress-ible mystery: God is the Most Holy Trinity of three persons united in a communion of love, pouring forth that creative, saving, sanctifying love into the world. Today’s scriptures celebrate the mystery of the Trinity and give us clues for living that mystery in our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

It is often heard that today’s observance is an “idea feast,” and that it is somewhat difficult to grasp its meaning. Other great solemnities, such as Christmas and Easter, have an easily grasped core. Yet, even though the Trinity is at the heart of our faith, firmly declared in the Creed since the Council of Nicea in 325, we are used to having people shrug and say, “Well, it’s a mystery.”

Perhaps it is more helpful to think of this as a “relationship feast,” since it unveils our deep-est identity. Dorothy Day was a great social reformer, pacifist, and ardent lover of the Trinity. When people told her that she would certainly be canonized one day (the process is indeed under-way), she protested dismissively by remarking that people were raising a fuss just because she was not afraid to talk about God. She loved the Trinity, and treasured the traditional icon for the feast, also known as “The Hospitality of Abraham,” depicting the three angelic beings seated at a table tilted to-ward the viewer and laden with bread and wine. For her, the Trinity revealed the heart of the Catholic life, three C’s if you will: community, communica-tion, and communion. That was not an “idea” for her, but what it means to be created in the image of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
