Living God’s Word
AUTHORITY FROM GOD According to Moses, the people decided they didn’t want to hear God’s voice directly any more. It was much too frightening. Why couldn’t God send human teachers, prophets, instead? God agreed, but with a warning. The people had be er listen to those teachers, because they spoke in God’s name. That arrangement, though, had its own problems, for them and for us. How do I know this teacher is truly from God? And if the teacher is from God, are all parts of the teaching meant for me? We have the Church and scripture to help us with those ques ons, but s ll there are always a few loose ends. That is the powerful significance of the sentence in today’s Gospel: “The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” The people knew that this Jesus was authen c—truly a teacher sent by God. They knew it by hearing him. copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Ash Wednesday ~ Are You Ready?
In the Roman Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the season of prepara on for the resurrec on of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. During Mass, the ashes which give Ash Wednesday its name are distributed. The ashes are made by burning the blessed palms that were
distributed the previous year on Palm Sunday. The distribu on of ashes reminds us if our own mortality
and calls us to repentance. In the early Church, Ash Wednesday was the day on which those who sinned, and
who wished to be readmi ed to the Church, would begin their public penance. The ashes that we receive are a
reminder of our own sinfulness, and many Catholics leave them on their foreheads all day as a sign of humility.
Fas ng and abs nence is not simply a form of penance, however; it is also a call for us to take stock of our spiritual
lives. As Lent begins, we should set out specific spiritual goals we would like to reach before Easter and decide how we will pursue them them—for instance, by going to daily
Mass when we can and receiving the Sacrament of Confession more o en.
