St. Alphonsus Liguori–New Orleans “Virtual Buddies”

“Jesus said to him in reply, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’” Mark 10: 51 Dear Friends,

Today I am praying for just a fraction of the faith of Bartimaeus. Even a crumb. Bartimaeus could not see Jesus with his eyes, but his other senses were keenly aware of who Jesus was. What he had heard about Jesus compelled him to call out to Jesus, even as others scolded him. He believed that if Jesus looked his way, things could be different for him. It’s likely that as a blind man, Bartimaeus had been disregarded his whole life, yet he believed that this Jesus would see him differently than anybody else ever had before. Jericho was a busy noisy place, but still Jesus heard Bartimaeus call amidst all that noise. In the chaos of Jericho, Bartimaeus and Jesus met and lives were changed.

Can you imagine ever only hearing about Jesus (not reading about Jesus, seeing movies about him, Googling “Jesus”) from other people – people who don’t even take the time of day with you, by the way – and that is your only source of information, yet having such deep faith that you beg for Jesus to take pity on you? Would I do that? Would I be able to overcome my own self-consciousness and need for control to yell out to a man I have never met and whom I cannot see in a crowd of people who don’t like me? What would it take for me to risk myself to that extent? In our most recent formation session of the Rite of Christian Initiation, we explored how our faith is a gift from God and it is up to us to respond, and how we can ask for more faith. Bartimaeus’ faith was so strong that when Jesus called him over, “he threw aside his cloak.” For a beggar in Jesus’ day, the cloak was the place he gathered the coins people tossed to him. If blind Bartimaeus no longer had a cloak, he could no longer be who he had been for most of his life…a beggar. He was willing to give up his identity even before he knew that Jesus would cure him. That was the strength of the faith that God had planted in the heart and soul of Bartimaeus. His response was so pure. Bartimaeus didn’t need to ask God for more faith. His faith brought the return of his eyesight, and without even being invited, he immediately followed Jesus. He knew, based on the faith God gave him that his place was with Jesus.

What have been your “Bartimaeus” moments? Your free fall into God’s grace, when you’ve totally given over all the things that keep you earthbound and relax into the complete and utter trust of God…and it turns out even better than you imagined? I can think of a few, and I know they’ve brought me right here into this loving community of St. Alphonsus Liguori. I can also think of many times when I could open my hands only so far to God’s grace, and I did not have the courage to ask God for more faith. Particularly now, as I write to you from my Dad’s home on a beautiful lake in Michigan where I am spending some time as his caretaker, asking God to help me understand and know what my Dad needs as age and illness affect his life. These are scary untried waters for this daughter, and I know many of you have been in them. There is no internet here and barely cell service, which in a different time would be peaceful and wonderful, but now feels isolating and limiting. I have found in these circumstances my own form of “blindness” as I am cut off from easy resources like google – what we use when we try to solve our own problems by becoming armchair experts – as well as the ease of making phone calls and reaching out for support as I try to advocate and assist my father who seems so foreign to me at times. I have had moments of feeling on the side of the road calling to Jesus to look my way, which I know he is, but I need more faith to recognize how it is happening.

The pairing of the first Reading and Gospel this week are perfect for a time like this. Through Jeremiah, God says “I will lead them to brooks of water, on a level road, so that none shall stumble.” In our blindness God calls us even more urgently to God’s self. Our Heavenly Father rejoices as we return from our isolation, as we ask for more faith. Our Father smoothes the road, so in our blindness we won’t stumble, until we are ready to open our hands fully to grace and sink into God’s loving and trustworthy embrace. You are in my prayers this week as we all navigate our blind spots!

In Christ’s Peace, Doreen Kelly

Please Help More Families Afford Catholic Education

Many thanks to those who have contributed to

Empower Illinois or Big Shoulders to help fund Catholic education for students at our school! We have once

again met the matching fund goal of $50,000 in donations. However, we still have four students who have not

yet been funded by Empower Illinois.

We have eight students who are awaiting awards from Big Shoulders. That means we have a total of twelve students to

fund for scholarships for next year that we know are truly needy families. Tuition for one student is $6,230 this year.

Donations to Empower IL, Big Shoulders or the Sister Agnes Scholarship Fund will help to make Catholic

education a reality for these students. No amount is too small and all donations are

greatly appreciated.

We currently have 3 students on the Wait List for Empower Illinois, 5 students on the Wait List for Big Shoulders and 12 who have applied for assistance through the school. We need to keep our current families and provide some support to those

current and new families who are eligible. Won't you try to help us?

• We celebrate and embrace families from multiple cultures

• Registration is open for Preschool 3,4, and Kindergarten-8th grade

• Financial Assistance for qualifying families

• Full-Day Kindergarten

• Sports, Dance, Music, Art, Spanish, Polish Club for all grades

Religious Education

Religious Education Catechists and

Catechist Aides Needed for Grades 2 & 3 - Mondays 6:00-7:15pm

St. Alphonsus Religious Education is returning to in-person catechesis. Catechesis is an essential task given to us by Jesus when He said, “Go and make Disciples.”

It is our task, as a parish community, to form the hearts of the next generation.

The role of the catechist is, first of all, to be a person of faith, a disciple of Jesus, and then to be a witness to others, a companion on the journey of faith.

Please consider becoming a catechist and inspire the next generation to fall in love with Jesus.

Training and lessons are provided.
