sessions by parents and godparents is required. To make
arrangements for baptism, please call Norma at 541-747-7041.

Universal : Youth, That young people may respond generously to their vocations and seriously consider offering themselves to God in the priesthood or consecrated life.
Pastor’s Corner
Well, we finally did it! Thanks to your generosity, and a generous matching
gift, we raised almost $5000 for St. Alice’s translation project! As I mentioned a
few months ago, we are moving toward more bi-lingual classes and events so that
all our parishioners can benefit—and we can spend more time together as one
community. We just had our first live translation event this weekend in Spanish
during our Safety training for the ushers and greeters. How does it work?
Through the miracle of technology, ‘there is an app for that’! We are
partnering with a company called ‘Interactio’ which uses people’s own smartphones as the audio receiver for
translation. So, for example, if I’m teaching a class or giving a homily in English, an interpreter is listening
to me and speaking in Spanish into a computer. Anyone who needs to hear the Spanish simply opens the
Interactio app on their own phone and listens with earbuds or a bluetooth headset during the event! The
person translating is in a sound booth or a remote area so that his voice doesn’t compete with mine during the
talk.
The beauty of this technology is that most people needing translation have a smartphone, so there is no
cost to the parish other than the yearly subscription fee for using the app (a considerable savings over
traditional radio). It will also allow us to tailor our events for our whole parish together. And, whether we
get a guest speaker to come to St. Alice who speaks English or Spanish, the technology will allow everyone to
take part. In the future, we could even add other languages if there is a need and a desire. This is potentially
a revolution in pastoral care, and I’m excited to try it out with all of you. Our first big test will be Holy
Week services, and I hope that it will make everyone’s experience of mass more prayerful and smooth.
Now, you might be saying, “I don’t have a smartphone, how can it work for me?” As long as you have
a regular cell-phone and earbuds or a bluetooth headset, it can work! There is a toll-free number that you can
call to listen to the translation without even using the app! We’ll have more details available in the coming
weeks. If you are in need of translation (in Spanish) for Holy Week and don’t have a phone or tablet, come
talk to us and we have a couple spare devices you can use.
Now you might also be asking, “Is this going to replace Spanish Mass?” NO. This is primarily about
classes and events, but also to help us make the big feasts (Christmas, Easter) bi-lingual experiences that are
more pleasant for everyone. It is something new, and I hope that you’ll give feedback to help us determine if
it is a good fit for us and how best to use the technology in the future.
Next Sunday is Palm Sunday! (Can you believe it?!) I hope that all of you will plan on attending the
live stations of the cross which will happen in between the masses on Sunday (about 10:30am). It is a very
moving production and Don Nau and a dedicated team of actors from our English and Spanish masses have
put a lot of work into it. Keep up the prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: only 2 weeks left till Easter!
Blessings,
Fr. Mark

The Gospel today challenges us to see and believe the signs of grace in our lives: joy, peace, forgiveness, mercy and kindness.
Through your almsgiving you are giving signs of grace to others as your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brings joy, peace, mercy and kindness to the hearts of those who are suffering.
A grief recovery Weekend, for those grieving the loss
of a marriage by death, divorce or permanent
separation, will be held June 24 - 26 in Milwaukie,
near Clackamas Town Center.
The retreat consists of presentations by Beginning
Experience team members, periods for private
personal reflection and sharing in small groups. The
cost of $195 includes lodging for 2 nights in a double
room, meals and resource materials. Single rooms
are available for an additional $20.

Thank you to Julie Foster
who has faithfully been the
baptism preparation
catechist at St. Alice for over
a decade. With grateful
hearts, we recognize the
many gifts she has brought
to this work. She was
always well-prepared with
enriching content, was
reliable and well-organized,
and imparted the essence of
the sacrament with insight and love. As Julie steps
down from this vital role, Debbie Jarvis will now be
working with parents of infants and young children as
they prepare to have their little ones baptized. Debbie
comes with abundant enthusiasm, much knowledge,
and a passion for her faith. Thank you, Julie!
Welcome, Debbie!

using the translation app services are strongly
encouraged to download the Interactio app NOW from
the Apple store or Google Play to be better prepared.
Continue monitoring the bulletin or watch flyers/
posters as these events get closer for more
information.
