POPE FRANCIS—PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR AUGUST
Universal: Sports, That sports may be an opportunity for friendly encounters between peoples and may contribute to peace in the world.
Evangelization: Living the Gospel, That Christians may live the Gospel, giving witness to faith, honesty, and love of neighbor.
Pastor’s Corner Summer is almost over! Well, maybe not the weather, but the school year is rapidly approaching, and college orientations and classes are already underway for new students. If you’re wondering where the time went, you’re not alone! Time is really so short—give your heart to Jesus today! It’s been a busy summer at the office, and there have been some needed upgrades. We just replaced our antique phone system that was on the fritz for several months with a new system—and we
now have an automated answering machine in English and Spanish for after-hours calls, with the option to transfer emergency anointing calls directly to my phone! (and all of this for a great price and without raising our monthly phone bill!) Our website continues to get better, and we now have our parish calendar uploaded under the “news/events” tab. Thank you to our volunteers who worked on it (and continue to do so). If you would like to schedule an event at the parish, please call the office. Additionally, if you wanted to listen to any of the Sunday homilies or pass them on to friends, they are uploaded by the middle of the week under our “media” tab in both English and Spanish. As time goes on, we’ll hopefully upload any classes taught here at the parish as well! If you do social media, you can also follow me on Twitter with the handle: @frmarkbentz. Due to technology problems, I’m a little behind in giving you our fiscal end-of-year report for the parish. I hope to be able to share it with you soon so that we can celebrate the successes of last year as well as look ahead to future work in building the kingdom of God here in Springfield! Be sure to check out “Part 2” of our Exploring the Mass series in today’s bulletin for explanation of the chalice and paten. Also, if you haven’t signed up for Dr. John Bergsma’s parish mission on October 8th in Beaverton, be sure to check our website for on-line registration: you won’t want to miss it! Tickets are going fast! Lastly, I would ask for your prayers—I’ll be gone this week on retreat with some brother priests—please ask God for healing, renewal, and an outpouring of the Holy Spirit for all of us. The retreat ends on my birthday, so if you all pray for me I will count the blessings received on retreat as your gift to me! You are a gift to me, and I’m grateful to be among you as your shepherd. Blessings, Fr. Mark Bentz

Pope Francis - @Pontifex 4:30am - 19 Aug 2016
Today, we hear Jesus say to us, "...when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind: blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can serve the "poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind.”

Train a boy in the way he should go; even when he is old,
he will not swerve from it (Proverb 22:6)
Do you remember these words?
“You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so
you are accepting the responsibility of training them in the
practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring them up to
keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving
God and our neighbor. Do you understand what you are
undertaking?”
In accepting this responsibility, you as parents are the
primary religious educators of your children. Your home is
the Domestic Church and the place where your children first
experiences the love of God and learn of their Catholic
Faith. Our Religious Education program at St. Alice is here
to support you, to complement your child’s religious
education and not to replace it.
In support of your Domestic Church, the religious education
classes for children from kindergarten - 5th grade, and for
adults will begin October 1st. These classes are scheduled
to coincide with each other
Pre-registration in now open for the 2016-2017 program.

The Carmelite Sisters—Visiting the Carmel
The Carmel is located on a wooded hillside just outside of
Eugene, Oregon. The site measures nearly 40 acres and is
typical of one of the more lovely parts of the United
States. There are century-old Douglas firs, an assortment
of flowering ornamentals, and nearby scenic views
overlooking parts of the Emerald Valley. Eugene and its
immediately adjacent neighbor, Springfield, together make
up a small, friendly city of upwards of 250,000 people.
The public is welcome to attend services at the Carmel and
visit the Gift Shop. There is an ample parking area and a
small public garden with an original, sculpted Carrara
marble of Our Lady and her Infant Son as a centerpiece.
The sisters mostly remain within the enclosure
although they are happy to field questions and
otherwise speak to visitors through the intercom system.
