Magic puts Pan on stage

By Matt Crossman

A campaign to spread coverage of free vaccines among Hume school students will be undertaken aer a 275 per cent spike in the number of whooping cough cases reported this year.

Health Department gures obtained by Star Weekly reveal 139 cases were reported in the year to July 1 – up from 37 in 2014.

ere have been 23 cases so far this year in the Macedon Ranges, down from 28 in 2014.

Hume council and GPs have urged parents to attend a series of “catch-up” immunisation sessions being held in October in a bid to halt the spread of the highly contagious disease.

More than 1200 students did not receive booster vaccines during the council’s most recent visits to schools because families did not return consent forms.

Mayor Adem Atmaca said it was important young people were properly immunised.

He said the council had previously oered the vaccine to all year 10 students but would roll out injections for every year 7 student from next year, with high rates of whooping cough in residents aged 12 to 15.

‘‘Whooping cough is a terrible illness and it can be very debilitating for suerers, many of whom exhibit a prolonged cough that can last up to three months,’’ Cr Atmaca said. ‘‘e condition is highly contagious and extremely serious for babies.’’

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, kills one in every 125 infants under six months who develop the illness.

“at’s a tragedy when such a simple vaccine can prevent its spread,” Cr Atmaca said.

Tristar Medical Group senior manager Anne Gardner said constant vigilance was required, with high vaccination rates crucial to general community health.

‘‘Our doctors urge vulnerable members of the community – adolescents, pregnant women and the elderly – to please have those immunisations,’’ she said.

Ms Gardner said whooping cough was a terrible disease.

“e symptoms are extremely uncomfortable and it goes for an extended period of time … babies are at extreme risk of mortality,” she said. “Our infants and the elderly rely on the rest of the community being vaccinated.”

Catch-up sessions will be held at the Craigieburn Function Rooms from 5.30-7.30pm on October 12, Sunbury Memorial Hall from 5.30-7.30pm on October 21, and Hume Global Learning Centre from 6.30-8pm on October 27.

But critics say the changes, with access to more than 200 services to be removed, are unfair to Sunbury passengers.

Mr Coughlan said that as a father of three he considered extra Metro services the best option for the town.

‘‘If they’re going to need to go to university, V/Line is great for peak periods, but once you get into those o-peak periods there’s a lot of waiting around stations,’’ he said.

‘‘Youth unemployment is also a huge problem here, and a lot of that is the inability to get to where the jobs are.’’

Mr Coughlan’s proposal is supported

By Matt Crossman

e Metro rail service to Sunbury could be dramatically improved without putting on extra trains, according to a proposal prepared by a train driver.

Sunbury’s Steve Coughlan has used publicly available data to create a timetable that could potentially provide the town with full Metro coverage, extending all services from Watergardens. Until now, Sunbury has received about half the Metro services travelling to Watergardens. ‘‘A lot of it is just utilising layover time that’s now wasted,’’ Mr Coughlan said.

e proposal, which he said complied with Metro work practices, was prepared in response to Public Transport Victoria’s (PTV) decision to ban Sunbury commuters from travelling on V/Line trains.

Restrictions will not be enforced until next January, but passengers are being actively discouraged from boarding V/Line services.

e changes, prompted by completion of the Regional Rail Link, are aimed at reducing overcrowding on Bendigo-bound trains.

e government recently added 10 extra Sunbury peak-time Metro services a week with a promise of more to come.

by Sunbury-based Hume councillor Jack Medcra, who urged Transport Minister Jacinta Allan to reinstate o-peak V/Line services and deliver extra Metro trains.

As reported by Star Weekly, Sunbury Train Star Weekly, Sunbury Train Star WeeklyAssociation members were buoyed by a recent meeting with representatives of PTV and Ms Allan. STA wants to keep access to all V/Line services, gain more Metro services and have all Metro services extended from Watergardens.

A spokesman for Ms Allan said extension of Watergardens services was among a range of options being considered.

Train driver’s Sunbury solution

Consumerism, science, nature and the way we see ourselves are explored in a new Sunbury exhibition featuring works by three visual artists.

Sunbury’s Maddi Seyman and fellow La Trobe University Bendigo students Stey Herbertson and Rebbecca Luke provide three distinct perspectives through paintings, ceramics and sculptures.

Ms Seyman says the opening of the ve-day exhibition at the Boiler House Art Gallery from 2pm this Friday will be an exciting moment for the trio.

‘‘It’s the rst exhibition for all of us,’’ she says.

Planning for the show, which will be the basis of a written assignment for the students, began in mid-August.

Ms Seyman says the trio’s art will encourage people to ‘‘confront the surreal’’.

‘‘ey’re paintings exploring the way we see ourselves, ideas of beauty,’’ she says.

‘‘en there’s a collection of bowls and cups that take a view of consumerism and a series of sculptures about science meeting nature.

‘‘It’s really varied because we’re three very dierent artists, so dierent ideas are being covered.’’

Bodies in Bloom is open from 10.30am-4pm, October 3-6. Entry by gold coin donation.

A group calling on Macedon Ranges council to do more to ght climate change is urging residents to lobby their councillors.

e plea from the Macedon Ranges Green Energy Coalition follows a recent meeting with the council during which members made the case for a stand-alone climate change policy.

As reported by Star Weekly, the Star Weekly, the Star Weeklycoalition, which has collected more than 3000 signatures at markets and events, wants the council to commit to becoming carbon neutral by 2020.

It recommended installing solar panels on all council buildings, at an estimated cost of $1 million.

Coalition co-ordinator Rob Bakes said members feared the need for action on climate change would become ‘‘lost’’ in the council’s new environment strategy.

‘‘Like waste management, it needs a stand-alone policy,’’ he said.

Mr Bakes said members wanted the council to adopt the coalition’s recent clean-energy petition as the basis for a new policy. ‘‘People are frustrated that we’re still talking about action on climate change.’’

e council’s planning and environment director, Sophie Segafredo, said calls for emissions reduction targets and the installation of solar panels would be considered as part of the new environment strategy.

‘‘It is not feasible to meet the timeframes suggested for action,’’ she said.

e council last week gave in-principle support to RMIT University’s greenhouse challenge to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.

Young people with autism can build robots – and develop their social skills – as part of a workshop at Woodend.

e event, organised by Macedon Ranges council’s youth engagement program (YEP) for 11-16-year-olds on the autism spectrum, will give kids the chance to learn how tocreate their own robotic device in a safe environment.

YEP, which is supported by sta at Cobaw Community Health, meets every ursday during school terms.

Linda, whose son William was among those who pushed for an autism-specic group for

young people, says YEP promotes stress-free interaction amongst the kids, who typically struggle with social skills.

‘‘ey oen don’t have a big friends group at school … this gives them somewhere they can interact with each other.

‘‘ey don’t feel like they’re being judged. ey just get on together.’’

e workshop is at Woodend Neighbourhood House from 4-6pm on October 8.

Bonded by a challenge

By Matt Crossman

e future of a rural living zone report more than a decade in the making appears to have been decided aer a Macedon Ranges councillor withdrew a rescission motion lodged 12 hours aer a lengthy debate that led to the plan’s apparent adoption.

e council’s In the Rural Living Zone report, which sets out how more rural-residential lots could be made available, was due to be presented to the Planning Minister aer Cr Russell Mowatt failed to have the matter deferred by a vote of 5-4 last Wednesday night.

But early last ursday, Cr Mowatt called for the decision to be rescinded, leading to a special meeting being called for October 14.

By late Friday the rescission motion had been withdrawn. It was unlikely to receive the support it needed, with mayor Jennifer Anderson, who sided with Cr Mowatt last week, ying out of the country last ursday.

Cr Mowatt said changes to the document made public on the Friday before the meeting had led to a barrage of phone calls and emails from residents fearful of inappropriate developments.

‘‘e intent of my deferment motion was to ensure all stakeholders have been actively engaged,’’ Cr Mowatt said.

‘‘It would have been remiss of me to do nothing, especially when concerns raised are about the consultation process.

‘‘I’m hopeful that, as a council, we can provide further opportunities for face-to-face consultation with submitters as we move

forward.’’ Last Wednesday’s debate about the report went for more than an hour, with councillors Mowatt, Anderson, Graham Hackett and Sally Piper calling for more investigation.

Concerns raised included recent changes to the zoning document, which had been put on display last November, with one area of land in Romsey being substituted for another.

Cr Hackett agreed a lot of work had gone into compiling the report.

‘‘And yet, right at the end, we have conjecture,’’ he said.

‘‘I don’t want this council to once again be accused of policy on the run.’’

Cr Anderson said the municipality already had nine per cent of its land zoned rural living – more than any other periurban shire.

Councillors Roger Jukes and John Letchford said there was no need for more consultation, as an eventual planning scheme amendment would require public display and submissions.

‘‘It’s been 12 years,’’ Cr Jukes said. ‘‘It’s time that this council took ownership.’’

Cr Mowatt acknowledged many residents had been consulted but said others had not, risking ‘‘further angst from the community’’.

‘‘You say it’s been 12 years … well, what’s a few more months?’’ he asked.

A Sunbury resident’s experience with road trauma will bring a real-life focus to a safety forum being held next week.

Organised by Hume council in conjunction with police, Road Trauma Support Services and the SES, the free event will show parents and young drivers how they can be safer on the roads.

It follows a successful forum in Craigieburn. Sunbury’s Leading Senior Constable

Lee Johnson says the event will show the far-reaching eects of road trauma and help people recognise attitudes that can lead to unsafe driver behaviour.

‘‘e aim is very much to raise awareness and provide tips on road safety,’’ Leading

Senior Constable Johnson said.‘‘is is a great opportunity to share some of

these things on a community level.’’ e event complements a police and council-

supported program for year 11 students that is run in local schools.

e forum is at the Sunbury Youth Centre, 51-53 Evans Street, from 6.30-9.15pm on October 8. Details: 9205 2200

Reminding people that failing to lock a car is an oence, she said police were ‘‘pulling our hair out’’.

‘‘e number of people still not locking their doors or leaving valuables on display is incredible,’’ Senior Constable Newman said.

‘‘People oen tell us they locked their doors, but there’s absolutely no evidence of forced entry.

Shed at showgroundsA new Men’s Shed will be built at Kyneton showgrounds with the help of a $60,000 state government grant. Kyneton Men’s Shed president John Mitchell said the money, announced by Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas last Thursday, secured the group’s future. The $95,000 shed will include a workshop, meeting and lunch rooms, and ofces. Cobaw Community Health has put $30,000 towards the project.

Council’s assets and operations director Dale Thornton said people could reduce re risk by cutting back long grass and removing weeds, twigs and leaves. Inspections of private properties begin next month and the council will start re prevention works along roadsides and properties in October, a month earlier than usual.

Students involved in a peer mentoring project at Sunbury College, including Jessica (pictured), will be part of an event aimed at creating better connections between the indigenous community and local health and support services. Food, cultural activities and information stalls will be part of Ngawan Aboriginal Group’s second annual Healthy, Happy, Deadly event this Wednesday. Sunbury Community Health Aboriginal engagement officer Gail Radford is expecting more than 200 people. ‘‘It’s about getting among the Aboriginal community and letting them know the things on offer, but it’s also about creating more awareness in the general community of our local indigenous population,’’ she says. On offer at Sunbury Memorial Hall from 11am-3pm will be live music, dancing, a children’s play area, boomerang painting, crafts, and viewing – from a safe distance – of a live crocodile and other native reptiles. Research is predicting that, by 2050, there will be close to 900,000 Australians diagnosed with dementia. When compared to the 342,800 Australians currently living with the disease, this is a massive increase.

September is Dementia Awareness Month, and this year’s theme is: Creating a Dementia Friendly Nation. The goal is to raise awareness of the disease and boost understanding of what it is like for a person to live with dementia, as well as encouraging communities to support those suffering from the disease.

This year, Home Instead Senior Care has developed a national education program to help businesses become more dementia-friendly.

The program is aimed at helping businesses through training and education to acknowledge dementia in their human relations. It also hopes to help those with the disease to make positive changes in their lives.

Martin Warner, owner of Home Instead Senior Care Australia, believes support and social inclusion are keys to helping those with dementia.

“Awareness, understanding and acceptance of dementia is so important, but we want to take it a step further and put this understanding into practice,” Mr Warner said. “We assist businesses with changing their systems in regard to communication, lighting, signage and environment – all of which can have a huge impact.”

The program offers free 30-minute training workshops with Home Instead Senior Care educators, who teach employees and employers how to safeguard a dementia-friendly environment. Sessions cover how to identify someone with dementia and how to communicate and support them.

This is bluestone country at its best. Built in 1855 and beautifully renovated in recent times, this gem of the halcyon days of Victoria’s gold rush retains many original features, including gorgeous timbers and imposing stonework. Set on about ve hectares, the main house has both formal and rustic spaces, beautifully integrated into this 21st century’s age of convenience and comfort. The working hub of the house is very spacious with a kitchen t to feed a gang of shearers. French doors open onto the timber deck of an alfresco area overlooking a delightful country garden, in which is nestled a restored bluestone chapel. The three bedrooms all have built-in robes. There are several farm outbuildings, fencing suitable for horses, plus stables and an arena, bore water and a windmill.

If bets were being laid on which Gisborne property has the most spectacular 180-degree south-western views, this one would be odds-on. But it’s not just its dramatic perch looking down over the village that makes this one a special place. It’s also the owner-designed, top-notch, solid sandstone house and the surrounding gardens that deserve the ‘“stunning” descriptor.

The grand, gated entry with security video is an indicator of what lies beyond on the block of about 3820 square metres – 1800 square metres of which are on a lifetime lease and perfect for pony, orchard or playground.

Beyond a splendid porte-cochere, the

large entry foyer has artistic, hand-painted panels on one wall, behind which is a grey-carpeted lounge-dining room with downlight-studded bulkhead. This and the next-door family-meals zone link with the wonderfully long stretch of a tiled sunroom/kids’ playroom with windows framing gorgeous rhodies, with “those views” beyond. Another living zone is a rumpus room with a granite bar atop solid timber storage (including a wine rack). A powder room is next door.

A wide bay window behind the sink captures a perfect garden snapshot, with other kitchen features including granite benches, vinyl-wrap cabinetry, walk-in pantry, integrated microwave, Blanco

electric cooktop and wall oven, a Bosch dishwasher and ducted-vacuum sweep. The next-door laundry (with unllable vinyl-wrap storage) could easily serve as a butler’s pantry.

The entry hall (to the left of which is a tiled study) heads to the right where bedrooms and a fully tiled main bathroom are found. Each large secondary bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe, while the main has mirrored built-ins and fully tiled en suite.

The sunroom is anked each end by covered pergolas, and another fully screened outdoor room is a third option for relaxation/entertainment.

Rosemary forms an amazing hedge as well as cascading over sandstone retaining walls and many owering exotics and shrubs lend colour and fragrance.

Commercial-grade ducted heating and cooling, lock-up and potting/storage sheds, and a double garage with internal access are other keynotes at a property within steps of town bus to shops, schools and train, and a downhill stroll from the town centre.

“DON’T SIGN ANYTHING”

Do not sign or initial anything until you have read and

understood the paperwork presented to you. This

sounds like common sense doesn’t it? Unfortunately

we are all time poor and under pressure and at times

will “skim” the fine print with, at times, disastrous

results. When selling a property there are two

documents which your agent will expect you to sign.

The first is the “Authority to Sell”. This document gives

the chosen Agent and their representatives the right

to market your property and to introduce prospective

purchasers to the property. Before signing check the

amount shown as being the price of your property, the

expected selling range, the costs involved in selling

( Agents Fees and Marketing) and the length of the

Authority period. Provided you are happy and fully

understand the documents then, and only then, sign.

The second document you will be asked to sign is the

“Contract of Sale”. Once again, check the contract

carefully. Are names spelt correctly, is the offerofferof ed

price the price that you have agreed to, what is the

settlement date and are all conditions clear and

acceptable to you?

Common sense, yes! But if in doubt don’t sign!

Investors are encouraged to place their properties with Zafar Property Group, specialists in rural property management in the Sunbury-Macedon Ranges region.“We guarantee first-rate service, including staff fluent in Mandarin, Urdu, Hindi, German and Italian,” said Sabine Gazic, property manager.Your return on investment is our top priority. To register your property call Sabine today on 0429 786 459 or [email protected]

Happy with Service and ROIWe have bought a large parcel of land for investment to hang on to until the rezoning happens in that area, speculatively around 3-5 years. In the meantime we entrusted this land to Sabine at Zafar Property Group who found a suitable tenant and manages the property for us.

Australia’s leading home builder Metricon has recently opened two of its most popular house designs for display in Rosenthal Estate, Sunbury.

They are stylish, spacious and affordable. The Savannah 34 and Santorini 28 have

been constructed to cater for families with active lifestyles.

Victorian housing general manager Peter Langfelder says the latest designs are ideal for families.

“Our two new displays at Rosenthal Estate in Sunbury are prime examples of

how two different home designs can offer exible and comfortable family living,” he says.

The Savannah 34 is a double-storey house with an open-plan design. It has numerous living spaces and two bathrooms. In a spacious family-meals area, the kitchen (with butler’s pantry) can deal with all sorts of functions and the theatre room makes entertaining easy.

On the rst oor are the four bedrooms. The main bedroom has an en suite.

“The Savannah really is an entertainer’s

dream, Peter says. “With family living at the heart of this design, exible zoned living on the rst oor gives the younger members of the family a place to escape.”

The Santorini 28 has been designed with simplicity in mind.

“It is a spacious, single-storey design and boasts a zoned layout to allow for exible family living,” says Peter.

The Santorini has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a double garage with internal access.

“Meal time is made easy as the large

kitchen has a walk-in pantry,” Peter says. “The open-plan design of the kitchen, living and dining areas is complemented by a spacious outdoor room.”

Metricon offers Australian families exceptional properties.

“It’s important to us that we continue to design innovative homes that Australian families will love to live in,” Peter says.

For more information, visit the new display centre at Rosenthal Boulevard, Rosenthal Estate Sunbury, go to www.metricon.com.au or call 1300 METRICON.

VNL coachtakes overat Riddell

Jarrad Walker is the new Riddell A-grade netball coach. (Shawn Smits)

Victorian Netball League coach Jarrad Walker will also be in charge of Riddell’s A-grade team next season. Aer Lauren Close decided not to continue despite tasting premiership success in her rst year, the Riddell District Netball League club moved quickly on Walker.

Southern Saints coach Walker will combine his VNL commitments with coaching the Bombers next season.

Walker is experienced on and o the court, having played netball for Victoria and Australia.

Close took over from Eliza Allen as Riddell coach at the start of this year, as she recovered from a knee reconstruction.

e star defender returned to the court in the second half of the season.

But she admitted aer the grand nal that she had struggled as coach early in the season and wasn’t sure what she was doing.

Despite this, she led her side to a 51-34 win over Macedon in the grand nal just over a week ago.

e transition from Close to Walker will be an easy one, with the new coach already familiar with the club.

“Because he’s coaching at Riddell next year he joined us in the nals series to help out,” Close told Star Weekly aer the grand nal.

“He’s just a fantastic coach and has a really level, steady head.

“He has played netball for Australia so he knows the game.

“He coached the Southern Saints to a grand nal [in division 1 of the VNL] this season but, unfortunately, they didn’t win.”

Close said she would still be helping out but in a dierent coaching role focusing more on club development.

“I’m looking at trying to help the junior girls a bit more and bridging the gap between the juniors and under-19s at Riddell.

“I’ll concentrate on that and I think I have a lot more to oer the younger girls. e A-graders know how to do everything already.”

Just days aer its grand nal loss, Macedon has announced its A-grade netball coach for next year’s Riddell District Netball League season.

Aer changing coaches midseason, the Cats were always going to be on the lookout for a new coach at season’s end with Karri Ambler and Kelly Nicholas only temporarily lling the roles.

Club president Terry Kernan said new coach Ciara Stewart was impressed with what she saw in the Cats’ 51-34 grand nal loss to Riddell.

Stewart comes with an extensive playing and coaching background. “She said we have a lot of good kids who she can work with to develop further. At the game she had someone doing stats to have a look at the areas we need to improve in,’’ Kernan said last week.

Despite living in Sunbury, this is Stewart’s rst foray into the RDNL. Most recently she has been playing-coach at Winchelsea in the Geelong and District Netball League.

“She’s had a lot of success as a player and coach and when she heard about the job she was really interested in it,’’ Kernan said.

“She helped set up the Plenty Valley Comets in the Parkville Premier League competition and she still plays in that and several other times a week.”

Kernan said Stewart, a goaler, will be a playing coach.

“She will coach A and B grade sides and bring in someone to coach the under-19s and C-grade sides. She will oversee all four teams and is likely to bring her own people in to help her out.

“I think she will be tough and she expects a lot. Aer every game she does assessments and puts them online for her players to look at.’’

Kernan said there were likely to be changes to the team that made the grand nal this year. “She’s well connected in the netball area and is no doubt going to attract people.

“We’re talking to all of this year’s girls to see what they are doing. Kate McLeod looks like she will be retiring, while Bec Colwell is weighing things up.

Aer being named the second-best Little Athletics centre in the state, Sunbury wants to go one better this season.

In a pleasant surprise to everyone at the club, the centre nished ve points behind Geelong in the Little Athletics Victoria (LAV) centre-of-the-year ranking.

e criteria is how the club is run – not results by its athletes at events.

“One of our guys nearly jumped through the roof when it was announced,” club president David ies said.

“We were hoping for the top 10, but once we’d heard who was in the top 13 we didn’t think we were in with a chance.

“ere are 11 teams in our region and a couple of them were in the top 10 and they normally

Little aths club’s big aimbeat us. When they said a ‘Metro North region club’ had nished second we knew it was us as the other teams had been called.”

ies said the previous highest the club had nished in his ve years at the club was 27th.

“We are judged on a variety of things,” he said. “It’s about getting things on time to LAV and they visit the club to make sure everything is in order.

“It’s also about participation at events in the region and at state level. No one knows exactly what all the criteria are.”

In a good night for the club, it was revealed they had raised and donated the most money to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

“We didn’t expect that,” ies said.Finishing second in the state also earned the

club $2500.

“It’s the rst time they’ve given money for where you nish,” ies said. “[We’ll use it] to build a new shed and run electricity to it.

“ere’s not a lot of space in our current shed. e new shed will allow us to drive our golf buggy inside to reduce the amount of work carrying things.”

e new little athletics season starts this Saturday.

“We had 195 members last year and we’re hoping for 200 this year,” ies said.

“We’ve gone to more high schools to get more kids in the older age groups. Kids seem to go away from little athletics as they get older.

“We have such a strong under-15 boys age group this year and we want to get kids in the other groups around them.

“We’re looking to get consistency through the age groups.”

AFL Goldelds has released the salary cap gures for its four football leagues for the next three seasons.

Ballarat league will have the highest salary cap of the four: set at $150,000 for 2016, and reducing by $10,000 in both 2017 and 2018.

e Riddell District league will have a salary cap of $120,000 in 2016, with $10,000 decreases the following two seasons.

As previously reported by Star Weekly, Star Weekly, Star WeeklyAFL Victoria approved a statewide player points system in 2016, and the introduction of a player salary cap the year aer, to try to even out competitions and lower spiralling costs.

While the salary cap comes into place in 2017, all AFL Goldelds leagues will trial parts of it next season, these being the Ballarat, Riddell District, Central Highlands and Maryborough Castlemaine District football leagues

A year ago, Alex Darby couldn’t imagine she would be playing for Sunbury Jets, let alone have had the impact she has in Big V youth women’s division 2.

Having played only local basketball previously, Darby made an impact, not only on her teammates but on the competition.

Last Saturday, Darby was named in her division’s all-star ve and was named rookie of the year. She had also been nominated for the youth women’s division 2 most valuable player award.

Speaking aer being named rookie of the year, Darby said she was shocked at how she had made the transition.

“Denitely didn’t expect that in the rst year,” she said. “I thought I would have struggled a bit with the structure, as I’d never played basketball like that before. I played some domestic games and that was about it. I just played netball other than that.”

It was the repeated attempts of Jets’ youth league women’s coach Andrew Seidel that signed Darby to the Jets.

“Seides rang me and told me to think about it,” she said. “He kept ringing me for weeks and weeks and I thought I would go down and have a go.

“I honestly didn’t have any expectations. I don’t normally walk into things by myself and I didn’t know anyone. It was pretty daunting.”

e awards cap o a season that saw Darby and her teammates play o in the grand nal.

“It was unreal, especially for the girls who have been there for so long. ey pretty much won six games the year before and only one to two games the years before that,” she said.

“It was unreal for them to get to the grand nal. It probably wasn’t as big for me being my rst year as I didn’t know what to expect.”

Darby will make the transition into the Jets’ division 1 side next season.

“Rookie of the year is a really good achievement and, hopefully, I can jump into div 1 next year and have the same success next year.

“I played a few games [in division 1 this season], and it’s a bit dierent to youth league. Youth league is more my style; I like to get out and run in transition. Div 1 is a bit slower, and they are all bigger and stronger.”

She doesn’t have any regrets about stepping onto an unknown court.

“It makes me want more.”Jets’ Billy Feben was named in the

youth league men’s all-star ve side, while Luke Valentine was named the men’s division 1 golden hands winner.

It was an easy decision for East Sunbury to reappoint Steve Grey as coach of the club’s senior football team.

Grey, who made the switch from cricket coach to the club’s football coach this year, oversaw a massive improvement.

Aer winning only one game in its rst two years in the Essendon District Football League, the under won four games and nished sixth on the ladder this season.

It’s a vast turnaround on its rst two seasons; at the end of both, under held the wooden spoon.

Club president Keith Osborne said it was good to have some stability at the club.

“Stability is something we didn’t have in rst two years of the competition,” Osborne said.

“[Grey] changed the culture of the club, and we’re no longer the easybeats of the competition.

“It was the highest nish for our senior team in three years, and our under-18.5s only missed nals by a game.

“Some of those under-18.5 guys will start making their way into the senior side next year,” Osborne said.

Re-signing Grey hasn’t been the only pen to paper for the club in the oseason.

Reserves’ coach Mark Doherty and under-18.5 coach Daryl Cartwright will also continue in their roles.

under best and fairest winner Kamen Ogilvie will remain with the under, despite interest from other clubs.

Jason King, who nished second in the best and fairest, only three votes behind Ogilvie, has re-signed as well, as has Matt Reiel.

Ogilvie, who nished fourth in the EDFL division 2 best and fairest award, and Ash Fleming were named in the EDFL division 2 team of the year on Saturday night.

omas Cree nished runner-up in the EDFL division 2 under-18.5 best and fairest award.

Osborne said the club was already speaking to players about joining it next year.

O-eld, Osborne, who is overall club president, will take on the role of senior football president, while former senior president Anthony Blight is now junior president and will oversee the junior program.

“With the juniors, we’re going to have an under-eight program, which the EDFL doesn’t have” Osborne said.

“We’ll also have a summer kick program to keep kids playing football.

“We are taking the right steps … we are looking for people to step up and coach the junior sides now.”

Osborne said the club was already looking forward to next year’s competition.

“We are striving to play nals for the rst time in the club’s history next season,” he said.

Roos bring back an old hand to replace coachSunbury Kangaroos have turned to club life member and former coach Jarrod Dixon to lead them forward next season.

e Riddell District Football League club announced earlier this week that Dixon would replace Chris Meacham, who decided midway through this year that he would not be senior coach beyond this season.

Dixon, who last coached the Kangaroos in 2009, has spent the past ve years as an assistant coach at Keilor in the Essendon District Football League.

Kangaroos president Allan Walters said Dixon had been oered a one-year contract with the option of a second year.

“We advertised the job and Jarrod applied,” Walters said. “He’s a life member at the club and having been under Mick McGuane at Keilor for a number of years, we’re hoping he will bring back a lot of knowledge.

“Mick is one of the quality coaches going around.”

Dixon said it was an honour to be a senior coach of any side

“It’s great to be back at the Kangaroos,” he told the Star Weekly.

“I’ve still got heaps of friends at the club.“And the Kangaroos is a good t as I live in

Sunbury and my son has started in the junior program there.”

Dixon said he returned to the club a better coach aer gaining a lot of knowledge under McGuane.

He said he had coached only a couple of players in the senior squad previously.

“I coached for ve years at Keilor and it’s a great education,” he said.

“He [McGuane] is undoubtedly the best local coach in the system.

“You denitely never stop learning under him.

“Structures and player management are two things I’ve really learnt. e higher level of knowledge I’ve got is needed in the RDFL now as the standard has gone up.”

Dixon said he would continue the Kangaroos’ emphasis on bringing young players into the side.

e Kangaroos nished seventh this season in an injury-riddled year.

“My policy is building on what we have with young guys,” Dixon said.

“With where the competition is at, with the salary cap and points system to be introduced, I think the youth side of things is imperative.

“I want the seniors to get behind the youth program and have a big emphasis on getting youth into the side.”
