Our job in the South Pacific is both rewarding and heartbreaking. We get into the lives of so many abuse cases. The Lord often uses us to bring deliverance; other times, there is not much we can do. Here are a few of the cases we worked with this month. Please partner with us by praying for these girls.

CASE 1: Vashni is 30 years old. An Indo-Fijian born in Fiji, living in Suva, Nasinu. Vashni sells her body to any man and began when she was 10 years old. She gets $10 to $20 per customer. She has a daughter 14 years old who lives in another house with Vashni’s ex-husband, who does not work. Vashni pays her daughter’s school fees with the money she earns. She divorced about two years ago. Vashni now lives with her mother and younger sister who also engage in prostitution. “Really, I can come for counseling?” Vashni asked the HOH Community-Based Team Officer when she heard about HOH. “Yes, are you willing to come?”“Oh, yes.” Vashni then gave her phone number. The HOH Officer continues to follow up with this case in hopes of finding a safe place for Vashni to live and to get the counseling she needs and wants. She cannot come live at Homes of Hope because we only take teenagers and those with young children. What Vashni needs: 1) Prayer 2) Taxi fare to come to Homes of Hope for counseling, $30/week. (Continued next page)

CASE 2: On a remote island of Taveuni, next to sandy beaches and emerald water, 15 year-old Tika, hears catcalls from the local boys. They know she has a baby so maybe they can get her to sleep with them also. Tika has been used by 10 boys already since she was 12 years old. CBT Officers approached the parents to bring Tika to the HOH campus. “As long as I’m alive, we will take care of her,” the father said. The parents refused to send their daughter to HOH, and so she is not getting the counseling she needs to overcome a lifestyle forced on her from a young age. Tika does not know which of the local men fathered the child. What Tika needs: 1) Prayer 2) A change of heart from her father, or 3) Someone in her village to attend our Lay-Counselor workshop and work with Tika. CASE 3: 48 year old Uncle Vundu is the babysitter for 3 children, ages 13 to 15. Uncle Vundu molested the children until 13-year-old Lena got pregnant. The parents will not allow little Lana to come to HOH because they use her to do house work. HOH CBT Officers informed Social Welfare Dept of the case in hopes that they will require Lana’s parents to send her to HOH. What Lena needs: 1) Prayer 2) Social Welfare to refer the case to HOH. CASE 4: “My name is Pinky and I am 12 years old. I live with my parents and we are poor. I was sent over to the island of Viti Levu to work as a housekeeper for a couple. As I was working, I was sexually abused by the couple’s sons. I am nine months pregnant now. I did not know that my parents sent me to this house to become the wife of the one who abused me. Arranged marriages are part of our Indian culture. When the abuser’s family found out I am pregnant, they chased me out of the house. My uncle reported my problem to Social Welfare De-partment. They sent me to HOH where I have finally found a safe place.” What Pinky needs: 1) Prayer to recover from abuse. CASE 5: “My name is Isila and I’m 17 years old. I am in form 4 at school. When I was 10, my parents divorced. I was raised by a step-mom who does not love me. So I chose to follow my friends and did bad things like the nightclubs, drugs, sex. There I learned to sell myself to buy what I needed. Also, because I learned a foreign language, I took other girls to men who paid for sex. I got pregnant, but the baby girl died in the hospital after two weeks. I was very upset, but HOH took me in and helped to bury my little girl. I was rescued to HOH and now I’m doing the counseling. I feel close to Jesus and my heart is made new.” What Isila needs: 1) Prayer. CASE 6: “I am Mari. I’m 13 and I live in Labasa with many other girls in a place called the $2 Brothel. We rent the house and will do any job for $2. Sometimes we clean houses, chop sugar cane, and paint sheds. The job we do the most is sex for men.” HOH CBT Officers are working with local churches to offer these girls an alternative safe life and counseling. What Mari needs: 1) Prayer 2) Social Welfare to refer the case to HOH 3) Schools fees so she can break the cycle of poverty/abuse, $200/year. Mighty EmbraceMighty EmbraceMighty EmbraceMighty Embrace

“His left arm is under my head, and his right arm embraces me. Song of Solomon 2:6”

The Sierra Nevada Mountains trapped us. Three of us men backpacked too far in to return over the route behind. A climb above 14,000 feet stared us in the face. We were already in survival mode because a bear visited the night before. He climbed the tree in which we hung our food and left the wrappers from our food in tatters. We plied the stream for fish and combed the meadow for anything edible. As crazy as it sounds, we were having a grand time. We bonded as men, drawing on our wilderness savvy to overcome a bit of peril, and emerged from the woods a few pounds lighter, but high on testosterone.

As much as I enjoy acting the self-sufficient manly man, I am spiritually as vulnerable as a trembling schoolgirl. I need a protective Savior; not a far away, one-day-when-god, but someone to hold me through the dark night. Demons swoop about my head while my own flesh threatens to run off the cliff and dash my faith on sin. I am defenseless and weak-willed, exposed and shaking.

Jesus pulls me down into His embrace and tells me to stay low. If I rise to my feet of self-effort, He can-not guarantee protection. So I’m lying helpless on the ground, but I find His left arm is under my head. This places His mouth next to my ear as He cushions my fragile skull against the hardness of life. He whispers His promises until fear melts away. I wonder at our intimacy, when He has millions who depend on Him. Still, His right arm—the symbol of His might and power—is around my waist. It protects me from attacks while it also keeps me from bolting.

Yes, this is the Savior I need. Not one who adds me to his list of followers then marches away, but One Who keeps me close until the storms are over. I cannot endure the horror of the world without a Shielding Lover, and I cannot survive if I squirm from His embrace. The manly thing to do is to recognize my dire need and curl under His strong embrace.

Prayer: “Mighty Lover, do not let me go.”
