Third Class of “Town Treasures” HonoredOn Valentine’s Day, Feb 14, from 3 – 5 pm, the third group of “Town Treasures”

will be permanently hung in the Seymour Center to join the two previous classes. Until then, they’re on display at the Chapel Hill Historical Society. These outstand-ing older adults have guided, ministered, taught, and led the Chapel Hill-Carrboro communities for many years. Their contributions and examples help us link the past with the present.

Award-winning local photographer, Catharine Carter, took pictures of all the “Town Treasures”. Each black and white portrait captures them either at home or in a location that reflects their contributions to our community. In addition, local writ-ers interviewed the honorees to document their favorite community memories, as well as the local changes they’ve witnessed.

The “Treasurers” honored this year are: Anne Barnes, Jean Holcomb, Bitty Hol-ton, Richard Johnson, Ellie Kinnaird, Jane “Coolie” Monroe, Mary Morrow, Bob Pat-ton, Velma Perry, Margie Pfaff, Elizabeth Ryan, and Clarence Whitefield. When you see these special photographs, you’ll come away from your “visits” with a greater knowledge of our local history, as well as an appreciation for some of the many people who’ve made this area so special.

A Valentine’s Day reception will be held on Mon, Feb 14 from 3 – 5 pm at the Seymour Center, co-sponsored by the Friends of the Seymour Center. It will honor these very special “Treasures” who’ve been such an integral part of the communi-ty’s “heart”. Having their portraits permanently hung in the Seymour Center, where they can be readily seen, is an honor. Come join us for this very special occasion!

Many thanks to our event sponsors that helped make the Department on Aging’s 30th Anniversary

Celebration a success!

Still Looking for Homes for PortraitsWe hope that you have had a chance to visit Edie Cohn’s exhibit at the Seymour Center. Edie Cohn is an artist who has been doing portraits in this area for the last 30 years. In the early 1980s she was the mod-erator for life drawing classes at the Carr-boro ArtsCenter in Carr Mill Mall. She often invited senior citizens from the Meet Your Neighbor Club (which was also in Carr Mill Mall), to pose for her class instead of hir-ing models. Now, 25 to 30 years later, she wants to find homes for all of the portraits that she’s kept safe all these years. Many of them are identified and we’d like to find either the people who posed, or their families, for the others so that these very special and lovely portraits can find their permanent homes. The portraits are on view through Dec 2 at the Seymour Center. After the show, the models, or their fam-ily members, may take the drawings home (there may be a nominal charge). For more information, call Janice Tyler at 968-2071 or email her at [email protected], or Cydnee Sims at 969-3025 at [email protected].

Should You Change Your Medicare Part D Plan?Mark your calendar for the Medicare Pt D Annual Enrollment Period – Mon, Nov 15 – Fri, Dec 31.

Each year most Medicare Pt D plans change the medications they cover, as well as their premiums. This may mean that you will have higher drug costs and/or premiums if you stay with your cur-rent plan for 2011. Find out if your Medicare Pt D 2011 plan will offer you the best prescription drug coverage, and be the most cost-effective, by coming to a free Medicare Clinic at an Orange County senior center. Trained Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) volunteers will help you evaluate your Pt D options – which may result in saving you money! Take advantage of this brief annual period when you can change to a different plan without a penalty. However, people on subsidies can change plans throughout the year. To find out if you’re eligible for a subsidy, as well as for other Medicare or health insurance questions, call Latonya Brown, SHIIP Coordinator, at 968-2082. To schedule your personal Medicare Pt D appointment, call 968-2070 for the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill, or 245-2015 for the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough.

Will You Be Turning 65 Soon? Will you be turning age 65 within the next six months? If so, this seminar is for you! The

Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) and the Orange County Department on Aging are hosting a Medicare Information Seminar on Wed, Jan 12 from 10 am – 12 noon at the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill, and Fri, Jan 14 from 10 am – 12 noon at Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough. There will be an overview of the Medicare enrollment process, coverage under Medicare Pt A, B, and Medicare Pt D prescription plan choices, as well as supplemental insurance plans. People, including those retiring from the state system and those continuing to work, are encouraged to attend. Come, learn about retiree health coverage, Medicare Advantage plans (Pt C) and how to choose the right plans for you. In addition, there will be information on subsidies that help pay for Medicare Pt B and Medicare Pt D for those with qualifying incomes. If you have any questions, please call Latonya Brown at 968-2082.

Older Driver Safety Awareness Week is Dec 5 - 11

To celebrate Older Driver Safety Awareness Week, the UNC Division of Occupational Science and the Or-ange County Department on Aging are offering a workshop and CarFit event geared to older women driv-ers. Current research has shown that: (1) women often stop driving before they need to, and (2) women often provide transportation for other older adults who are no longer driving.

To support women age 65+ who are continuing to drive, the work-shop will cover:

(1) Basic Car Maintenance and Safety for Women Drivers

(2) Maintaining Safe Driving skills as you age

(3) CarFit – Assessing how your car fits you. CarFit has trained technicians who lead driv ers through a 12-point checklist

to determine the “fit” of their vehicle and to recommend possible adjustments or re sources for continued driv ing safety. It is a national initiative co-sponsored by AARP, AAA and the American Occupational Therapy Association

Faculty and students from the De-partment on Aging and the UNC Divi-sion of Occupational Science as well as guest experts will facilitate these sessions.

All the participants will have the opportunity to take part in each sec-tion. Refreshments will be served. Enrollment is limited to 25 people. Fee: FREE. The workshop, including CarFit, will be held at the Central Or-ange Senior Center on Thurs, Dec 9 from 9 am – 12 noon.

Lunch Reservations are Critical! We are fast approaching the maximum num-

ber of meals that we can serve daily, so it is more important than ever for you to make your meal reservation. We are facing a significant rate increase from our caterer while the number of meals that we are serving daily continues to grow. Voluntary and confidential donations for lunch are more important than ever. The daily lunches for people age 60+ are funded by Fed-eral funds from the Older Americans Act, as well as funds from the Towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough, and Orange County Govern-ment and United Way. For people under the age for 60, the cost is $5 per lunch.

All lunch program participants are request-ed to make a reservation at the front desks of the senior centers by noon of the day before they’d like to have lunch. This will help guar-antee that enough meals are ordered for ev-eryone, and provide better service. Any extra meals will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis to those who didn’t make a reservation.

Are You a Caregiver Running on Empty?

Are you an unpaid caregiver, who needs a break from your caregiving responsibilities? If so, you may want to take advantage of the Orange County Department on Aging’s Caregiver’s Day Out pro-gram. It gives caregivers a chance to take a break while their loved ones socialize and participate in group activities and exercises. Caregiver’s Day Out is limited to 10 participants and is presently taking new applications. The program is FREE for qualify-ing participants and is held each Wednesday from 11 am to 4 pm at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center . If you are interested in being considered for participation or would like more information, please contact our dementia outreach coordinator, Carolyn Jefferson. RN, BSN at 929-1742.

Thanks for the Grand Piano! The Orange County Department on Aging

would like to say a big “thank you” to Helen Shea Johnson’s family for the donation of a Baldwin Grand Piano to the Seymour Center. Ms Johnson taught piano for over 40 years, as well as being a choir director and church organ-ist for several churches in Connecticut and Flor-ida. She worked all of her life at being able to play Bach well, along with Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy. Even up to a couple of weeks before her death, Ms Johnson was play-ing Bach! She loved her piano and her family was delighted to gift it to the Center. They are especially pleased that it is being used several times a month for Waltzing practice on Thursday nights, where her daughter, Mara Shea, an ac-complished and well known fiddle player, fre-quently plays with the piano.

What It Is: RSVP 55+!Last year, 530 RSVP volunteers age 55 and over served

100 nonprofit agencies across Orange County. They report-ed more than 63,000 service hours.

While these numbers may appear high, they are a drop in the bucket when you consider there are over 12,000 citizens age 55+ in Orange County. Just imagine what the numbers would be if they were all RSVP volunteers! With adequate volunteer support, nonprofit agencies could reach their full community service capacity and expand, but without vol-unteers, most would cease to exist. In return, volunteers receive personal satisfaction and according to the research, have longer and healthier lives.

Whether an agency has 500 volunteers or five, there’s always a call for more. Agencies provide RSVP with job de-scriptions for their volunteer needs. RSVP then recruits and matches volunteers based on their interests with the appro-priate opportunity. If the puzzle doesn’t fit, the process is repeated until volunteers find their niches. RSVP works to bring the two together and ensure a smooth relationship.

At the same time RSVP works to identify unmet commu-nity needs and develop new programming. For example:

• Senior Education Corps, a partnership with the schools to match volunteers age 55+ to build literacy skills in read-ing and math. Last year, the program matched 28 volun-teers with 109 schoolchildren.

• A free income tax assistance program for eligible cli-ents - RSVP-VITA is offered in partnership with the IRS and is the second largest VITA program in the state. Last tax season 106 volunteers served 2,005 clients.

Other benefits to RSVP volunteers include free insurance coverage while on assignment; if needed, help with mile-age incurred while volunteering; updates on new volunteer opportunities; and recognition for their contributions. RSVP is a nationwide organization, federally sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

RSVP Volunteers, Call UsOnce a year RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program will ask for your help in updating

your volunteer record. Give us a call or send us an email. This information re-mains confidential and is required by our federal sponsor, the Corporation for National and Community Service. If your record is not up-to-date when we are planning special events, you may not receive information, such as the invita-tion to our annual recognition luncheon. Never hesitate to call Caroline to make changes at 918-2806, or go to [email protected].

Please let us know of changes in the following:(1) Contact information, including email(2) Current volunteer placements(3) Name of your car insurance company(4) Driver’s license expiration date for your free RSVP supplemental liability

insurance coverage(5) The beneficiary (name and contact information) for your free RSVP life in-

surance policy(6) Emergency contact name, relationship, phone, address(7) If you change your volunteer service, if you drop out then re-start later, or

decide to volunteer elsewhere.

Why Report Volunteer Service HoursTracking RSVP volunteer data is a valuable tool in detailing

and highlighting how senior volunteers impact communities across our nation. RSVP reports keep the federal sponsor aware of what senior volunteers actually accomplish, and how valu-able they are to the operation of hundreds of nonprofit organiza-tions, schools, health care facilities and our town governments. Without the tracking done by RSVP, the efforts of senior volun-teers would remain unidentified in a comprehensive way. This would lead to a total lack of knowledge as to the true impact of today’s senior service contributions on the welfare of each and every citizen.

RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program asks its volunteers to report ser-vice hours by the 10th of the month following service, or find out if your nonprofit agency reports RSVP hours for you. If you have questions or need report forms, call RSVP.

In 2009-2010, 530 RSVP volunteers served 62,483 hours through Orange County non-profit agencies, which would equal 30 fulltime employees.

JAPANESE EMBROIDERY

Traditional Japanese Embroidery is 1,600 years old and only came to this country in 1985. People learn this specialized art by going through 1-10 phases, which can take years to complete. The em-broidery is done with silk and met-al threads on silk fabric. The silk filaments come directly from the cocoon. Threads are made directly from the filaments depending on the thickness or thinness needed. In various pieces, some superim-posed embroidery is used (embroi-dery over embroidery). Motifs are usually flowers, birds and some-times human figures. Instructor: Carl Newman, certified instructor by Kurenai Kai in Atlanta, GA. He teaches across the US and is a graduate of the University of TN with a degree in Textile Arts.

Contact the instructor at (336) 784-6886 or [email protected] for material information. Fee: $75, plus materials fee per session.
