Computer Classes for People with Low Vision or Blindness: Community Input Needed

Computer classes for people with blindness or low vision were piloted at the Seymour Center last fall. They were made possible by the cooperation be-tween the Orange County Disability Awareness Council, SeniorNet, United Way, the NC Division of Services for Blind, and the Orange County Depart-ment on Aging. All these agencies are committed to continuing the classes and are using the spring semester to fur-ther develop the program, instruct new volunteers, and receive input from the community regarding interest in these classes. Please contact us if you have an interest in participating in future classes, if you have any friends or family mem-bers who might benefit from them, or if you have insights about the curriculum you would like to share with us.

Please call 968-2087 or email [email protected]

Spring is just around the corner and we have lots of great program offerings. On Wednesday, March 23 we will be hosting our third

annual Resource Connections Fair – “Live Well, Laugh Often and Love Much” at University Mall. This is an event not to

be missed with over 50 agencies represented. May is Older Americans Month and we’re celebrating this year’s theme –

Older Americans: Connecting to the Community. Check out the many volunteer activities highlighted in this issue,

and we invite you to get involved in your community. May is also Annual Meeting time for the Friends of the Central Orange Senior Center and

the Friends of the Seymour Center. They greatly appreciate your support and hope to see you at one of their meetings. This issue of Senior Times is packed with lots of new programs.

We hope you will check them out, and I look forward to seeing you at your local Senior Center.

Sincerely, Janice TylerSenior Times Managing Editor

Interim Director, Orange County Department on [email protected]

You’ll Want to KnowRegistration Process for Senior Center Classes/Programs

Just a reminder that we are using a new computerized registration system, so it may take us a little longer to get you registered. Please be patient. It will help us greatly if you will come into the Center to pre-register for activities. For classes that require a payment, you will not be officially registered until we receive your payment. All participants will need to com-plete a Senior Center registration form, which is required for all classes and events.

Still Looking for Homes for PortraitsIn the early 1980s Edie Cohn was the moderator for life drawing classes at the Carrboro

ArtsCenter in Carr Mill Mall. She often invited senior citizens from the Meet Your Neighbor Club (which met in Carr Mill Mall), to pose for her class. Now, 25 to 30 years later, she wants to find homes for all of the portraits she’s kept safe all these years. Many of them have been identified. We would still very much like to find either the people who posed, or their families, for the rest of these very special and lovely portraits so that they can go to permanent homes. Drop by the Seymour Center Front Desk and have a look at the portraits and help us find their families. For more information, call either Janice Tyler at 968-2071 or [email protected], or Cydnee Sims at 969-3025 or [email protected].

Join the Senior Center Email List The word is spreading about our email list. We now have over a 1,000 subscribers. If you

are interested in being part of it, please e-mail Janice Tyler at [email protected]. We send out information about every two weeks. We hope that you will find it informative, effi-cient and a great way to keep up to date on what is happening at your local Senior Center.

In Search of “Perfect” ShoesSome people think that one of the great challenges in life is finding good comfort-

able shoes. A primary concern of many health care providers is fall prevention in older adults. Athletic type shoes with laces can reduce the risk of falls, and ones with a larger sole surface area helps improve balance. Shoes such as high-heels increase the risk of falls and make the wearer’s balance worse. Did you know that walking in bare feet, slippers, or with only socks on your feet increases the risk of falling? Don’t take a chance – wear shoes! Ones that fit higher on the heels improve balance. The risk of slipping/falling can be further reduced by wearing shoes with a rough sole material in addition to wider and deeper tread grooves which channel away liquids on the floor/ground – such as rain. Did you know that there are shoes with specific characteristics to help address individual musculoskeletal complaints - such as rigid toe joints and knee arthritis? Physical therapists (PT) can help recommend shoes to help with these and other complaints. We’re very lucky to have a PT at both the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill and the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough who are available for consultations, as well as physical therapy.

Michael Gross, PT, PhD, FAPTA, a Professor in the Division of Physical Therapy at UNC - Chapel Hill, sees patients at University Physical Therapy. His research group is looking for people age 65 + who’ve fallen in the past year and have poor balance. They want to find out if foot orthotics (which they’ll provide) in your shoes can im-prove balance. Call 843-8680.

Third Annual Resource Connections Fair – Wed, Mar 23

Save the date and come to the 3rd FREE Annual Re-source Connections Fair, “Live Well, Laugh Often, and Love Much”, on Wed, Mar 23 at University Mall in Chapel Hill from 10 am to 2 pm. Over 50 agencies will be repre-sented at the Fair, which will be coordinated by the Or-ange County Department on Aging. Specialists will be available for consultations, and to answer your questions or concerns. Information will be available on Health and Wellness Clinics, Assisted Living, Adult Daycare, Alzheim-er’s Disease, Legal Planning, Financial Counseling, Medi-care, Home Care, Medical Equipment - and much more! This public event will provide important resources to help senior adults and their families gain information, and to become motivated and empowered to take charge of their lives. In addition to all the wonderful resources, there will be refreshments, entertainment, raffles and wellness displays. You’ll also be able to find out how the Orange County Department on Aging can help you now and in the future.

Are You a Caregiver Running on Empty? Are you an unpaid caregiver, who needs a break

from your caregiving responsibilities? If so, you may want to take advantage of the Orange County Depart-ment on Aging’s Caregivers’ Day Out program. It gives caregivers a chance to take a break while their loved ones socialize and participate in group activities and exercises. Caregivers’ Day Out is limited to 10 partici-pants. The program is FREE for qualifying participants and is held each Wednesday from 11 am to 4 pm at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center. If you are interested in being considered for participation or would like more information, please contact our dementia outreach co-ordinator, Carolyn Jefferson. RN, BSN at 929-1742.

Nursing Homes and Adult Care Homes – Getting Good Care This workshop will empower family and friends to advocate for quality care and

quality of life for their loved ones living in nursing homes or adult care homes. You will learn what good care is and how you can partner with facility staff to foster care that respects residents’ choices, dignity and individuality. Specific strategies to resolve the most common concerns such as not getting enough fluids, not getting proper grooming, not being taken to the bathroom as needed, and increased depen-dency will be discussed. Finally, outside resources to assist you in your advocacy efforts will be shared. Co-sponsored with Triangle J Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging - Ombudsman Program. Carmelita Karhoff and Charlotte Terwil-liger, Regional Long Term Care Ombudsmen, will co-facilitate this workshop. The event will be held on Tues, Mar 8 from 3 – 5 pm at the Seymour Center. Call 968-2070 to register.

Attendees will be encouraged to share personal anecdotes as a caregiver. In addition, they will learn practical, hands-on skills caregivers need to create meaningful relationships with those in their care. The workshop will help participants understand the benefits of incorporating music into daily care plans, as well as learning the basics of how to set up a therapeutic music program. Lunch Reservations are Critical! We are fast approaching the maximum num-

ber of meals that we can serve daily, so it is more important than ever for you to make your meal reservation. We had a significant rate increase from our caterer while the number of meals that we are serving daily continues to grow. Voluntary and confidential donations for lunch are more important than ever. The daily lunches for people age 60+ are funded by Federal funds from the Older Americans Act, as well as funds from the Towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough, Orange County Government, and United Way. For people under the age for 60, the cost is $5 per lunch.

All lunch program participants are requested to make a reservation at the senior centers the week before they’d like to have lunch. Reserva-tions will be accepted based on availability. This will help guarantee that enough meals are or-dered for everyone, and provide better service. Any extra meals will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis to those who didn’t make a reservation.

To make a reservation, call:Seymour Center: 968-2070Central Orange Senior Center: 245-2015

Help is NeededThe Orange County Nursing Home and Adult Care (Assisted Living) Home Com-

munity Advisory Committees need volunteers. Both committees are made up of community volunteers who know the importance of nursing homes’ and adult care homes’ (assisted living facilities) residents having good quality care. These com-mittees are the link between the Orange County community and the facilities. How do they do this? After being trained by our regional long-term care ombudsman, several committee members go together into facilities to observe the quality of care. They share their information with the rest of the committee and it’s put on Orange County’s web site so that the public can access and use it when selecting a facility for a loved one. In addition to community volunteers, the committees have the ombudsman and a staff member from the Orange County Department on Aging for support and resources. If you’re interested in helping increase the quality of care for residents in either nursing homes or adult care (assisted living) homes in Orange County, you are needed! For more information contact Charlotte Terwilliger, Regional Ombudsman, at 558-9401 or [email protected], or you can submit your application directly to the Orange County Board of County Com-missioners at www.co.orange.nc.us/boards/apply.asp

Want To Make A Difference? The first Master Aging Plan (MAP) was initiated by the Orange County De-

partment on Aging’s Advisory Board in 1999. It focused on five years, 2000 – 2005. Subsequently, another MAP addressed the years 2007 – 2011 and fo-cused on “Building an Aging - Friendly Community.” Both of them assessed a continuum of care to promote wellness, independence and functionality re-gardless of people’s chronological ages. We were the first county in NC to have such a comprehensive process. It resulted in innovations and enhancements to both the programs and services for seniors.

The number of area seniors is growing tremendously and the Orange Coun-ty Department on Aging wants to remain in the forefront of the aging field with its widely recognized senior centers, programs and services. To do that, we are starting the MAP process for the years 2012 – 2016. This year long process will involve assessing county seniors’ needs and preparing strategies to meet them. You can make a tremendous difference in many people’s lives - in both the immediate and longer term future. We hope you’ll be interested in serving on a MAP committee and be part of making dreams a reality! For more infor-mation, contact Janice Tyler at 968-2071 or [email protected].

Sacred Arts Tour – Monks of Drepung Gomang Monastery to Visit

Every year the Drepung Gomang Monastery, located in the South India state of Karnataka, sends 8 monks to the US. The tour offers a chance to experience Tibetan cultural, artistic and religious expres-sion and gives the Monastery’s monks the opportunity to raise funds to educate, feed, house and care for almost 2,000 exiled Tibetan monks. The National Sponsor of the Sacred Arts Tour is the Drepung Gomang Institute, a non-profit organization. The tour will include a stop in Chapel Hill, from Sat, May 21 to Sat, June 4. The Town of Chapel Hill’s Parks & Recreation Cultural Arts Division is supporting this Sacred Arts program by offering exhibition space at 523 East Franklin St, at the corner of Boundary St, from Sun, May 22 to Mon, May 30 where the monks will create a Green Tara Sacred Sand Man-dala. They will also offer workshops for adults and children, a Tibetan Cultural pageant presentation and other cultural activities. Take ad-vantage of this unique opportunity by coming to the following work-shops at the Seymour Center:

Wed, June 1 (10 am – 12 noon) - Butter sculpture is an ancient Ti-betan Buddhist art. They symbolize impermanence, (a main tenet of Buddhism) along with more ritualistic components, and are usually destroyed anywhere from a day to a few years. The sculptures are traditionally made with yak butter, but in exiled Tibetan communi-ties, where the weather is usually warmer, they are made with ghee, fat, and wax. Butter sculptures are displayed on altars and shrines in monasteries or family homes. They are traditionally made every Losar, the Tibetan New Year, and for the Butter Sculpture Festival, part of the Great Prayer Festival, or “Monlam Chenmo” that is held soon after Losar. During it, monks made huge multi-story high butter sculptures displayed outside the Jokhang in Lhasa, the holiest tem-ple in Tibetan Buddhism. For our workshop, play doh will be used as it’s more permanent. The monks will facilitate hands on instruction of the craft where designs will include flowers, conch, jewels, and animals. Come, learn and make your own personal sculpture to take home and enjoy.

Fri, June 3 (10 am – 12 noon) - Sand painting is another ancient Tibetan art form. A mandala is carefully constructed from dyed sand particles to represent the particular esoteric, textual traditions of Bud-dhism. Mandala is thought to have originated in India and introduced in Tibet in the middle ages. The mandala is constructed as a vehicle to generate compassion, realize the impermanence of reality, and a so-cial/cosmic healing of the environment. The most common substance used in the creation is colored sand, which is ground from stone. Other popular substances are powdered flowers, herbs or grains. In ancient times, powdered precious and semi-precious gems were also used. In this workshop we will be using commercially made colored sand and will learn the same techniques that the monks use to create yak, windhorse, snow lion and stylized fire designs.

Both workshops will offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to make unusual pieces for your home, or gifts. Just think of the pleasure they’ll bring – both visually and as “conversation starters”!

To register for these workshops call the Seymour Center, 968-2070. The suggested donation for each workshop is $15 and will be collected the day of the event.

ty’s rich cultural diversity through food and entertainment will be held on Sun, Apr 10 at 1 pm in McDougle School’s Cafetorium, 900 Old Fayetteville Rd, Carrboro. TAR HEEL DEPRESSION GLASS CLUB

The Tar Heel Depression Glass Club was formed in the spring of 1984. This is a group of people who share a common interest in col-lecting and preserving the glass-ware of the American depression era. Past programs have included talks on Heisey, Fostoria, and Cam-bridge; Jewel Tea, Mayfair, Fiesta, Hall teapots, Cloverleaf, and Fire-King jade-ite. Other times, how-ever, the program will be about something related to the interest of a club member that is not spe-cifically related to collectible glass or dinnerware. Some examples of these programs have been talks on cast iron, children’s toys from the 1940s and 1950s, glass paper-weights, Guardian cookware, and antique purses. Among the ac-tivities enjoyed by members are monthly meetings (First Monday of each month), social outings and trips to glass manufacturing ar-eas of the country (West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania). yOU MAKE ME FEEL SO yOUNG - DVD PROJECT DIRECTED By STEVE TOLL AND KATHLEEN (KACKy) HAMMON

America has a rich musical history. As we grow and develop throughout our lives, music marks our major and minor moments. This program will highlight individuals in our senior community as they tell their stories and the group performs the songs. The stories will be placed into the larger context of American history for the last 100 years, with the aid of narration and images, as the group performs the songs. Steve Toll and Kathleen (Kacky) Hammon will be the directors and provide all the mu-sical accompaniment, arranging, vo-cal coaching and audio production. The entire process will be videoed and edited to create a DVD to pro-mote the Seymour Center.
