Commitments as of April 6, 2016

On behalf of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s Board of Trustees, musicians and staff, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to tonight’s Spring into Music gala. Events such as this are vital to the stability of the Orchestra and we are most appreciative for the support you have provided through your participation in this celebration, with special thanks to our table hosts and sponsors. Your contributions are key to the success of this fine performing organization and we are pleased to announce that we have surpassed our fundraising goal for this evening. Thank you!

The NJSO’s mission resolutely states that our purpose and duty is to enrich lives through a passion for musical excellence and a commitment to New Jersey, its people and its communities. By creating a sense of community and building relationships with our audiences and partner organizations—whether it be in concert halls, schools, libraries, hospitals, food banks or community centers—the Orchestra is striving to impact and enrich the lives of people throughout New Jersey.

We look forward to having you join us for NJSO concerts during the remainder of the 2015–16 season in any of the conveniently-located venues in which we perform throughout New Jersey, and we hope you enjoy the talents of Norm Lewis, Thomas Wilkins and your NJSO this evening.

Sincerely,

Susan StuckerInterim President & CEO

A Message from the Interim President & CEO

Welcome to Spring into Music 2016! As the gala Co-Chairs, we are thrilled to have you join us for this important annual event.

We are especially pleased to honor three people particularly special to the Orchestra. First, we honor Ralph Izzo and PSEG for the support they have proudly

provided to the NJSO over the years. We are grateful for their innovative thinking, by tapping into the truthfulness of “music is the universal language” and by using the services of our musicians to meet the diversity and inclusion goals of the company and its client communities.

It gives us equal pleasure to honor and acknowledge Ruth Lipper and Steve Sichak for their leadership of the NJSO’s Board for the past eight years. It is particularly significant that we chair this event since we are the “bookends” to Ruth’s and Steve’s service; Victor having served as Chairman from 1991–2007 and Dave to begin co-chairing the Board, along with the sensational Linda Bowden, in July 2016.

During the Lipper-Sichak years, the robustness of the NJSO’s music programs and relationship-making has continued to thrive. Our engagement programs throughout the state have expanded and deepened. In addition, the financial stability of the Orchestra has improved dramatically. Steve and Ruth have set a high standard of leadership. For this, the entire NJSO family—board, musicians, staff and audiences—is extremely grateful.

Dr. Victor Parsonnet NJSO Gala Co-Chair

A Message from the Gala Co-Chairs

P.S. We are also deeply appreciative to Mary Jo Sichak and Mike Lipper for sharing their spouses’ time and energies with the NJSO these past eight years.

Dr. Victor Parsonnet David R. Huber

As Chairman, President and CEO of Public Service Enterprise Group Incorporated (PSEG), Ralph Izzo is proud of the PSEG Foundation’s two-year partnership with the NJSO, which delivers a series of initiatives that celebrate diversity within communities and connect families with unique cultural experiences, including free NJSO community concerts throughout the region. The NJSO is thrilled to honor Mr. Izzo and thank PSEG for its support.

Mr. Izzo was elected chairman and chief executive officer of PSEG in April 2007. He was named as the company’s president and chief operating officer and a member of the board of directors of PSEG in October 2006. Previously, Mr. Izzo was president and chief operating officer of Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G). Since joining PSE&G in 1992, Mr. Izzo was elected to several executive positions within PSEG’s family of companies. In these capacities he broadened his experience in the areas of general management, strategic planning and finance.

Mr. Izzo is a well-known leader within the utility industry, as well as the public policy arena. He is frequently asked to testify before Congress and speak to organizations on matters pertaining to national energy policy.

Mr. Izzo’s career began as a research scientist at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. He has published or presented more than 35 papers on agnetohydrodynamic modeling. Mr. Izzo received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering and his Ph.D. in applied physics from Columbia University. He also received an M.B.A. from the Rutgers Graduate School of Management. He is listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who and has been the recipient of national fellowships and awards. Mr. Izzo has received honorary degrees from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Thomas Edison State University, Bloomfield College, Rutgers University and Raritan Valley Community College.

Mr. Izzo serves as nominating committee chairman of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, and is on the board of directors for The Williams Companies, the New Jersey Utilities Association, the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), and the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI). He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Peddie School, Columbia University School of Engineering Board of Visitors and the Princeton University Adlinger Center for Energy and the Environment Advisory Council, as well as a member of the Visiting Committee for the Department of Nuclear Engineering at MIT. Mr. Izzo is a former Chair of the Rutgers University Board of Governors and the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce.

NJSO and PSEG Bring Music to New Jersey’s Diverse Communities

Across the country, orchestras are engaged in an important dialogue about creating deep connections with the diverse populations that live outside the concert halls. The NJSO is always looking for new ways to share the joy and power of live music through its communities and a unique opportunity to do that emerged in 2015.

PSEG—New Jersey’s largest electric and gas utility—and the NJSO engaged in a two-year partnership to present free chamber music performances in the communities of Jersey City and Plainfield. This

partnership is bringing music into areas of strategic importance to PSEG and into the hearts of many who have not heard the NJSO before. It has also strengthened the NJSO’s relationship with the mayors of both cities—Mayor Steven Fulop of Jersey City and Mayor Adrian Mapp of Plainfield.

Last June, the NJSO Chamber Players performed Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf at City Hall in Jersey City. Mayor Fulop read the story aloud to the audience as a woodwind quintet told the story with music. Later in the summer, a string quartet celebrated Latin American cultures with a “Hispanic Roots” program at Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield. A brass quintet played concerts at Hamilton Park and Washington Park in Jersey City, as well as at Library Park in Plainfield.

Many exciting chamber concerts are in the works for this year, including a Bollywood-inspired performance in Jersey City, participation in Plainfield’s annual Festival of Art and a children’s program at the Plainfield YMCA.

We are also engaging PSEG’s diverse employees by inviting members of their affinity groups to select concerts and NJSO Accents Events that appeal to the LGBT community, Hispanic and Asian populations, women in leadership and young professionals.

This exciting and innovative partnership is demonstrating the power of cross-sector collaboration by celebrating diversity within communities, connecting families with unique cultural experiences and introducing a partnership model with a range of future possibilities. We are looking forward to what’s next!

RUTH C. LIPPER and STEPHEN SICHAK JR.Co-Chairs of the NJSO Board of Trustees

It is our honor this evening to recognize NJSO Board Co-Chairs Ruth Lipper and Stephen Sichak Jr. who have led the organization with integrity and compassion since 2008. Their term has encompassed a number of impressive achievements, including the hiring of two music directors—Jacques Lacombe, whose critically-acclaimed tenure concludes this June, and the exciting Xian Zhang, who will take over the podium this fall; the completion of a successful $35 million Comprehensive Fundraising Campaign; the expansion of the NJSO’s education and community engagement programs and the development of a series of audience-engagement events (NJSO Accents) to bring audiences closer to the music and music makers. Additionally, Ruth and Steve’s leadership was critical in the development of a strong strategic plan, fostering our unique collaboration with musicians in every aspect of the organization (continuing Victor Parsonnet’s legacy of involving our musicians as Trustees), the expansion in Board membership and the financial progress the organization has made.

Ruth and Steve will remain on the Board of Trustees and will be succeeded by Linda Bowden—(New Jersey Regional President of PNC Bank)—and David Huber—(Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey) begining July 2016.

Ruth C. Lipper is former Executive Vice President and Treasurer of Lipper Analytical Services, Inc. She is active on several New Jersey boards including the Branch Brook Park Alliance Advisory Board, St. Vincent Academy Advisory Board, Co-Chair of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Trustee of The Newark Museum and Trustee of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center Women’s Association. She is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Summit, (NJ) a member of

the Museum of Modern Art Education Committee and the MOMA Council on Photography (NYC), a Historic Mt. Vernon (VA) Lifeguard, and Chair of The Lipper Family Charitable Foundation.

Together with her husband, she is a founding member of the Catholic American Studies Program at Fordham University in New York. Ruth is currently a member of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Stephen Sichak Jr. is Executive Vice President and Chief Integrated Supply Chain Officer at BD. Steve joined the company in 1993 and held various marketing and general management positions in Corporate and in the BD Preanalytical Systems business including VP of Corporate Planning, Chief Information Officer and WW President, PAS. In 2008, he became Senior Vice President Integrated Supply Chain and Business Systems where he is responsible for global Procurement,

planning and distribution, manufacturing, sustainability and IT. In 2014, he was promoted to his current position.

Steve is a native of Chicago, Illinois and holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from DePaul University and a Masters of Management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He and his wife, Mary Jo, reside in Wanaque, New Jersey.

ABOUT US

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s programs are made possible in part by The New Jersey State Council on the Arts, along with many other foundations, corporations and individual donors.

NEW JERSEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRANamed “a vital, artistically significant musical organization” by The Wall Street Journal, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra embodies that vitality through its statewide presence and critically acclaimed performances, education partnerships and unparalleled access to music and the Orchestra’s superb musicians.

Under the bold leadership of Music Director Jacques Lacombe, the NJSO presents classical, pops and family programs, as well as outdoor summer concerts and special events. Embracing its legacy as a statewide orchestra, the NJSO is the resident orchestra of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and regularly performs at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, Richardson Auditorium in Princeton, Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown and bergenPAC in Englewood. Partnerships with New Jersey arts organizations, state universities and civic organizations remain a key element of the Orchestra’s statewide identity. In addition to its lauded artistic programming, the NJSO presents a suite of education and community engagement programs that promote meaningful, lifelong engagement with live music. Programs include school-time Concerts for Young People performances and multiple offerings—including the NJSO Youth Orchestras family of student ensembles and El Sistema-inspired NJSO CHAMPS (Character, Achievement and Music Project)—that provide and promote in-school instrumental instruction as part of the NJSO Academy. The NJSO’s REACH (Resources for Education and Community Harmony) chamber music program annually brings original programs—designed and performed by NJSO musicians—to a variety of settings, reaching as many as 17,000 people in nearly all of New Jersey’s 21 counties.

For more information about the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, visitwww.njsymphony.org or email [email protected]. Tickets are available for purchase by phone at 1.800.ALLEGRO (255.3476) or on the Orchestra’s website.
