Tonight’s concert represents the efforts of our talented students and staff as seen in the school’s extensive music programme. During the year, boys have wrestled with busy lives to fit in practice, lessons, school musical, academic classes, cadets, sport, community service and chapel. The strength of Music at King’s is testament to the commitment of many people, not least the teachers, parents, executive and, of course, hardworking students.

Music is a long-range activity. It is one which needs careful nurturing, time and space. It is not for the faint-hearted or for those who wish for instant gratification. The tedium that can come with scales, arpeggios and the like is only offset by the rewards reaped in public performance, a night such as tonight, where students can display with pride their individual and collective skills.

This year, boys have experienced great opportunities in both the study and performance of music. Piano masterclasses with legendary pianists such as Australian Michael Kieran Harvey and international superstar Lang Lang, Meet the Music workshops with the dynamic maestro Richard Gill OAM, concerts performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, have all contributed to the richness of the boys’ learning experience.

The Marching Band has excelled at the ANZAC Day March in the city, the Passing Out Parade on the White Oval and the performance at the Royal Easter Show. The Senior Stage

Band performed at the Merimbula Jazz Festival and also with the iconic Judy Bailey and her Jazz Connection. The Senior Choir has performed at the Sydney Opera House for United World Concert Tours, as well as the Celebration of Anglican Schooling service and the Annual Monash Commemorative Service.

This year sees some exceptional boys (the largest number ever) pass through the HSC Music courses (Music 1, Music 2 and Extension). Their performance and compositional talents have enhanced our school beyond measure.

Individually, mention should be made of Jock Webb (recipient of the Associate Diploma in Singing from Trinity College London – ATCL) who joins a growing list of successful diplomats with higher performance qualifications of an international ranking.

Pianist extraordinaire, Roger Kong was specially selected to perform in the first Steinway Emerging Artist recital this year in Sydney. Trumpeter, John Linquist valued his time in the Young Symphonist Programme with the Australian Youth Orchestra, whilst Nicholas Walmsley, Julian Walmsley and Harley Maulana performed with the flagship Sydney Youth Orchestra under international conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy and Michael Tilson Thomas. Harley Maulana has travelled to Canada to participate in Conducting courses.

At the end of Term 2, we farewelled Mrs Jan Piper, who retired from her position as Head of Strings after 25 years of service.

To complete the year, we will herald in the Christmas season with our Annual Festival of Lessons and Carols to be held on Sunday, December 4 in Futter Hall – an event not to be missed.

I do hope you enjoy tonight’s Gala Concert because in the words of Friedrich Nietzsche “Without music, life would be a mistake”.
