    School Year

There is so much for families to prepare for

as the school year comes to a close: state

    testing, prom, athletic competitions, exams,

graduation, summer break. In the midst of a

host of existing family obligations, the end

of the school year can be filled with joy,

    excitement, anxiety, frustration, financial

    hardship, and even loneliness.

Lets all work together to help make the end of the school year a special one for each and

every family in our neighborhood, school,

Church, etc. Here are a few suggestions:

    State Testing & Exams.

Make sure students get 8 hours of rest each night before testing.

    Developing a schedule for activities,

    chores, dinner, studying, etc. will

ensure students are able to stay

    focused and on task.

Make sure students power down their cell phones and other

    electronics before going to bed.

Offer to study with students so that they do not feel alone or overly

    anxious about testing.

Prom & Graduation. This is a special time

for our young people. However, many of

them need to work in order to afford prom

tickets, cap & gown, dress attire,

    transportation, accessories, pictures,

yearbooks, and all that comes along with

helping to make prom and graduation

    special. Although working can provide

students with money and a good work ethic,

it can limit a students time for studying, family togetherness, extracurricular

    activities, etc.

Sponsor a student by offering to purchase items that he/she may need

    for prom and/or graduation.

Donate your gently used formal attire to charity, particularly those

    accepting prom & graduation attire.

Contact a high school or college/university counselor directly

to make a donation to meet a

    students need.

    Athletic competitions. Athletics requires a

great deal of time and money. Besides the

    uniform fees, costs associated with

competitions and travel can be very high.

    For many student athletes, the-end-of-the-

year state competitions are the highlight of

    their life!

    Sponsor a student.

Make competition a special event by bringing a group with you to the

    state competition as a personal

cheering section for the student and

    his/her team! Your presence will

    mean so much to students!

    Summer break. Many parents are

unsure of what their children will be doing

during the summer while they are at work.

This results in several concerns which we

    can help other parents address.

Offer to babysit at a reasonable rate or on a rotational basis with other

    parents.

Check in on students periodically while they are home alone.

Offer to drive students to summer activities at a reasonable rate or

    develop a carpool rotation.

Sponsor a students summer camp experience.

  • Travel, Explore, & Enjoy!

    ~Tierra Gerdine

Traveling is something that many of us want

to do, but dont have the budget to do. If you

are one of those parents who have a desire to

plan a family vacation for the upcoming

summer months then grab a pen and paper,

continue reading, and start taking notes.

    According to travelwithkids.about.com,

there are 7 easy steps to cheaper family

    trips.

The first step is to create a new email

account solely for planning your vacations

and finding the best deals. This is a great

idea. It saves time by not having to sort

through your personal emails and its all the

vacation information youd want in one

    single location.

The second step is to sign up for essential

deal alerts. One of the best ways to keep

costs down is to find a destination thats

within driving distance. There are many deal

finding sites such as Groupon Getaways,

Living Social Escapes, and Amazon Local

that will send you an alert whenever a local

    deal comes about.

Step 3 is helpful if you do not want to stay

within driving distance. Step 3 is to be the

first to know about great airfare deals. One

way that I do this is by checking for deals on

    Tuesdaysearly in the morning. Ive

always been able to find the cheapest flights

    this way.

Step 4 is to round out your hotel wish list.

What this means is to make a list of the

hotels that you want to visit and sign up for

    their special offers as well.

Step 5 involves being open to cruise lines. If

cruises are for you and your family, consider

a family-friendly cruise line. There are off

seasons that occur throughout the year, and

thats the best time to book your cruise. A

lot of times, the deals are so amazing that

its too good to pass up.

Step 6 is to find out deals from tourist

offices. Theres a local tourism office where

I reside, and I look forward to visiting them

for my next vacation. In doing so, I plan to

find some good deals, and gain even more

tips on how to best plan a trip within my

    familys budget.

The final step, step 7, involves patience. Sit

back and watch the deals come in, and then

narrow down the best ones. All of these

steps make it possible to travel cheaply.

Here are a few other suggestions that may be

helpful depending on how much time you

    have to plan. They include:

Participate in the 52 week savings

challenge. At the end of the year, use

the money you save to fund part or

    all of your vacation.

Use a travel credit card, if you can,

    to build up points.

Use points that youve earned on the

credit card you currently have and

apply the points towards travel. Most

companies let you use the points

towards hotel stays, car rentals, or

    airline miles.

As you sit down with your family, use these

tips and be sure to include all the things

thatll make your vacation one that everyone will truly remember!

  • Mentors

    ~Lydia Douglas

    www.booksbylydia.com

Parents, do your sons and daughters have a

mentor? Are you children serving as a

    mentor to their peers?

I was involved with a group of young people

and they really inspired me. They were there

for each other. It is very important for our

young people to have someone on the same

    page with them.

Having someone they can trust who will

understand them allows them to be more at

ease studying and doing homework, for

instance. Mentoring is a two-way process

whereby each party learns from each other

    in a big way.

We have to do all we can in order to keep

our young people a step ahead so they may

fulfill their dreams. With all that is going on

    within our communities, we should

encourage our young people to learn from

what is happening today. We do not want

them to learn the wrong lesson and end up

on the wrong side of what is right and what

    is wrong.

I talked with some young people and they

were encouraged by each other. One is a

now college student and one has been

granted a scholarship. Others were excited

and happy for this group of young people

and that has motivated them to continue

their goals and dreams, and to work even

harder to fulfill them. This is why it is very

important for our young people to be in the

mist of others who are on the same page. It

is also important to let them know that we

are proud of them and we support them.

We have some great young people. We only

need to let them know that we are here with

them and for them. And a reminder for

them is education is the key that will open any door in any direction they choose to go

    in.

We adults have a great responsibility for our

    young people. Communication is another

key in teaching them about life and what to

do and expect. There are lessons to be

learned in all areas of life.

Romans 8:28a tells us, All things work together for the good of those that love the

Lord. We need to let them know that some good is coming out of all of this confusing.

We must teach our kids along the way to do

    what is right.

Mentorship is very important. A lot of what

is going on now is new to them and we need

to be there to answer any and all questions

    they might have.

  • 5 Ways to Win At Fitness

    ~Kem Smith

    www.kissfitnessstudio.com

    www.kemsmith.com

Our society is obsessed with appearance.

Images are paraded in front of consumers

twenty-four hours per day through multiple

media outlets. Its never surprising when I encounter people who are passionate about

their appearance and as a result set lofty

personal fitness goals. I can never predict

who will achieve the goal and who will fall

short. I have studied the behavior of

successful people. If you are looking for a

way to get back in the saddle, heres a quick and dirty guide to winning at fitness.

    Get back in the game.

Quitters fail to win because they arent even playing the game. When you hit a brick wall

while getting in shape, it is always important

to remember why you started. Your why should be the reason that you push ahead.

You have to want it badly. So pick yourself

up, dust off the cake and cookies, and get

back on board with eating healthy and

    exercising.

    Go all out.

The only way to get better at anything is to

practice. The only way to get better at

fitness is to repeat fitness activities. Go all

out and be as fit as your schedule will allow.

There are no cheats. When you find yourself

struggling, throw out the diet pills and

surgery options. Go hard by doing what

athletes call two-a-days. That means you

work out twice a dayeveryday. Allow your results to fuel you because after 2

weeks of two-a-days, your body will start to

    thank you.

    Quit focusing on the money.

Investing in your fitness pays dividends that

cannot be measured by a diversified

portfolio. However, being fit can open the

door to opportunities: being able to stand up

straight, having a strong body, and

endurance gives you confidence that others

do not have. Make room in your budget for

your membership. Quit focusing on the

expense of being healthy because its less than the cost of an emergency room visit.

    Find a cheerleader.

I am a cheerleading coach. I have found that

these girls can really make or break a game.

    Something about excitement creates

momentum. Momentum can create a work

out frenzy. Before you realize it the person

who is cheering you on, will have piloted

you to the success you truly deserve. Dont worrycheerleaders are easy to find. Look for the person who is always smiling and

    always thinking of something encouraging

    to speak into your life.

    Stay plugged in.

When you feel like quitting, dont. Its that simple. You have to stay plugged in. Push

yourself to leave the house and push

yourself to be your best. If you are a

member or former member of K.I.S.S. come

  • Supporting Students during

    Test-Taking Time ~Billie G. Mathews,

Whether we agree or disagree with the

standardized testing of students in our public

schools, we know that testing is a reality.

Springtime is the time of year when schools

    conduct their standardized-based assessment

(SBA). Other testing takes place throughout

the school year, but it is the big test at the end of the year that seems to cause the most

stress. This article is written to provide tips

on how we, as teachers, parents, and

families, can support students during the

school year as well as SBA testing time.

Throughout the school year, teachers are

planning lessons and teaching based on

content standards adopted by national, state,

and district departments of education. Tests

that are administered are based on the

standards by grade level and subject. The

mission for teachers is to design lessons so

that student learning is achieved while being

sensitive to a variety of factors including

    language, culture, learning style, and

socioeconomic factors. This is a careful

    balance for teachers.

The role for parents and families is to

support and nurture learning. This is

    accomplished by providing a positive

environment for learning away from the

school setting. Make sure that your child has

a place at home to read, study, and do

    homework. In addition, getting enough

sleep contributes to the learning process.

According to WebMD (n.d.), children 3-6

years old should get 10 - 12 hours per day,

7-12 years old 10 - 11 hours per day, and

    12-18 years 8 - 9 hours per day. Establishing

    reasonable bedtime hours is important.

Once the student, teacher, parents and

    families have established foundations for

good learning habits, preparing for testing is

a daily duty. There are a number of

recommendations on how to prepare your

    child for the test.

Begin with Going to bed early: This will

allow your childs body to get enough rest to perform well the next day.

Getting up on time: This gives the student

enough time to get ready for the day and not

    feel rushed.

    Eating a nutritious breakfast: Balanced

breakfast foods such as eggs, toast or cereal,

fruit, and a glass of milk, juice or water will

keep energy levels up for test taking.

It is important for students to remember to

be positive and pace themselves. Moving

through difficult questions and coming back

to them is a good idea. Skipping, returning,

    and checking are good strategies.

  • Of very high importance is for students to be

told that it is okay that they do not know

everything and to do their very best.

Whether it is the big test at the end of the year or a chapter or unit test, these are some

suggestions to make test taking time the best

that it can be for your student.

  • If We Continue to Allow

    Unjust Practices, Our Children

    Will Continue to Fail

    ~Dr. Shonta M. Smith

    www.drshontasmith.com

What can I say or should I say, how am I am

going to discuss this? Well, there is only

one way to say it and that is to tell it like it

is. The sad truth is, these incidents, and

situations like it, take place on a daily basis

in Americas school systems. People pretend it is not happening. Dont want to acknowledge that its going on, and just turn the other way so they dont have to deal with the situation. Well, one way or another

we will either address the issue today or face

the consequences of not doing anything

tomorrow. We are failing our children. If

we as a nation continue to stand by the

wayside and do absolutely nothing, our

    nation will crumble.

As I was sitting in the library preparing to

work with one of my students, I observed

another adult, parent, and child. The mother

was dropping her son off to work with his

tutor. As an educator, I am always

interested in the strategies and techniques

that other teachers implement. Well, I hate

to say it, but what this educator was doing

was ungodly. She was unkind, cold and

outright cruel. It saddened me and I so very

much wanted to intervene, but in this day

and age you never know what people will

do. So I silently said a prayer and asked for

an opportunity to approach the parent when

she returned. The tutor never allowed the

little boy to sit down. She had him put his

backpack down, and briefly spoke with the

mother. After the mother left, the mayhem

    began.

At first it appeared as if she was just merely

reviewing sight words with her student.

However, things took a different spin when

the young man had a hard time pronouncing

the word or couldnt say the word. She would hold up a notecard and tell him, Say the word. You should know this word. You

will stand here until you say the word.

Dont lean on the chair, say the word.

You could tell the student honestly did not

know the word. Unfortunately, that did not

make a difference. For 30 minutes his tutor

held a notecard up and basically bullied him.

He cried and told her over and over again,

I dont know the word. I am trying. I dont know the word. Please, I dont know the word.

She decided to call his mom and tell her that

her son was having a tantrum. Within about

ten minutes, his mom returned to the library.

When she got to the table, she told him to sit

down and to get it together. She then asked

for the notecards and reviewed the words

with her son. She had him sound out each

word. If he could not sound out the word,

she told him look at the word, spell it, and

try again. If he could not say the word, she

would say the word, have him repeat the

word, and then spell the word. This went on

for about five minutes. After that, his

mother told her son to focus and get on task.

  • The students mother got up and began looking at books while the tutor began

working with her son. The tutor instructed

him to take out his word list and told him to

use each word in a sentence. As he began

writing sentences, she told him not to use

the word I in any sentence. The young man had some difficulties thinking of other

words to use. The tutor started to tell him

what he should be able to do and suddenly

his mother returned to the table.

To make a long story short, the teacher and

mother began talking. This time the tutor

asked the mother if her son had tantrums at

home and at school. The mother said, No.

The tutor then stated that if these tantrums

escalated, her son would have problems in

school. She even went as far as telling the

mother to speak with the pediatrician about

his behaviors and then started talking about

autism. She further discussed her years of

experience as a special education teacher.

The more the tutor talked, the more I prayed.

Now you may be saying this has absolutely

nothing to do with you. Well, it does have

something to do with you and me. It takes a

village to rear a child, and if the village is

aware of discrepancies and does nothing, the

village is part of the problem. The issue at

hand has nothing to do with the student; it

has everything to do with the teacher who

    was tutoring him.

Instead of meeting the child at his

    instructional level she bullied, embarrassed,

    disrespected and humiliated him. Teaching

requires that the teacher use strategies and

techniques that are beneficial to the students

they serve. At no point did this teacher do

that. She found fault with the child. Our

children deserve better. If we continue to

allow unjust practices, our children will

    continue to fail.

My prayer was answered! As I got ready to

leave, I walked slowly hoping the mother

would leave. I waited for her outside in my

truck. As I prepared to drive off the parking

lot, the mother and son got in their car. I got

out of my truck, tapped on her window, gave

her a note I had written and told her,

There is nothing wrong with your

son. He is a bright, intelligent young

man. Please give me a call to

    discuss your options.

    She thanked me.

As I drove off, my cell phone rang and it

was the young mans mother. We talked for about five minutes. During our discussion,

we discussed key strategies and techniques

used to teach children to read. In addition,

we discussed what effective teachers do. I

    concluded the conversation highlighting the

positives I saw in her and her son, and

provided her with additional suggestions and

    recommendations.

As I hung up the phone, I thanked the

Almighty for answering my prayer, and

allowing me to be a ray of light and hope.

We all must remember: we are either part of

the problem or part of the solution.

What steps are you willing to take to save

    our children?

  • Living Your Passion

    ~Curlie McCalla

Are you living your dreams? Are you doing

what you love? Do you even know what

your dreams are? Or, what you love?

Asking yourself these questions will allow

you to create and live your life on purpose

    while enjoying the journey.

A number of years ago, I started on the path

    of self-discovery. I was in a job/career and I

was bored, feeling stuck and I just wanted

out. I knew I wanted something more,

something different but didnt know what it was. In my quest for truly understanding

who I am and what I desired, I came across

a book called The Passion Test by Janet and

Chris Attwood. It has helped me to create a

plan in how to identify my passion and the

things that matter most to me.

Many of us never take the time to sit with

ourselves and go within to get to know the

magnificent person who is always following

us around. I decided to take the time, and I

was amazed at what I discovered about

myself. I would love for you to find out just

how awesome you really are as well. Here

are a few simple steps that you can start with

to get you on your way of living your

passionate life. I will give you some

guidelines, the steps to take, and some

suggestions for how to stay in action

    afterwards.

    1. Guidelines: The DOs and Donts. 1. Do the test in one sitting. It should

take about 20 to 30 minutes.

    2. Do find a quiet place where you can relax your mind and go deep within

and think about your ideal life.

    3. Dont consult with anyone. This is about the things that light your fire.

    4. Dont take the test as a couple or group.

    5. Dont be concerned if it sounds unrealistic. This is very personal and

it wont be like anyone else.

    2. The Test.

    Step 1

Make a list of at least 10 of the most important things that would give you

a life of joy and fulfillment. Do this

    without judgment or censoring.

Let your list sit for a while. Come back to it in a few hours or the

    next day.

    Step 2

Compare the items on your list and identify the top 5 which are most

    important to you.

Do this by taking the first item and compare it to each passion on the

list. As you go down your list,

    whichever is more important, label

    as #1.

Do the same with your 2nd item. Compare with the remaining items,

when you get to the next best one,

    that becomes #2.

Continue this process and go through your complete list and identify your

    top 5.

  • Now that you are clear, what you want will

show up in your life but only to the extent of

your clarity, so be specific. MAGIC

  • Inclusive Education

    ~Esthere Scott, Ed.S.

It has gone by many different names:

    Mainstreaming. Class-within-a-class.

    Integration. The term that most

accurately describes the goal for each

student with a disability is Inclusive

Education. This means the ability to

    receive education with their general

    education counterparts on a full-time

    basis.

Its been quite a journey with regard to teaching students with disabilities in

    general education. The above phrases

    represent how schools have attempted

to have students with disabilities in

general education. It will truly be a

landmark day when we talk about

    teaching students with disabilities

    alongside of students without

    disabilities as simply education.

    Inclusive education means that students

with disabilities are supported in age-

    appropriate general education classes in

their home schools and receive the

    individualized instruction based on

    their individualized education programs

(IEPs) within the context of the core curriculum and general education class

    activities.

Inclusion is an effort to make sure

students with disabilities go to school

along with their friends and neighbors

    while also receiving whatever specially

    designed instruction and support they

need to achieve high standards and

    succeed as learners. Inclusive education

is not the same as mainstreaming or

    integration.

Mainstreaming merely attempts to move students from special

    education classrooms to general

    education classrooms only in

situations where they are able to

    keep up with their typically

    developing peers without

    specially designed instruction or

    support.

Integration provides only part-time inclusion, which prevents

    the students from becoming full

    members of the classroom

    community.

In the wake of Common Core, some

may be wondering how students with

IEPs will fare. Some districts have begun experiencing success with

    Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

In short, this is a way for students of

varying learning rates and styles to

    access the curriculum and standards

    effectively.

  • Simple Salmon

    ~Angie Sievers

    Founder/President

We eat salmon a lot at our house! Everyone

loves it; however, we always stick with the

same recipe teriyaki salmon on the grill. Its great, but I really wanted to change it up. This time I wanted to bake it. I

wanted some strong flavors to come through

so I decided to include some Dijon mustard,

a little honey, and some breadcrumbs. How

can you go wrong with that?

The end result was pretty amazing and the

family agreed. This will be another go to recipe for salmon at our household. Plus, it

    is super simple to prepare.

    Ingredients:

4-5 (4 oz.) Salmon Fillets (We buy

    Costco salmon, fresh and frozen.)

1/4 Cup of Butter, melted (optional)

    3 Tablespoons of Dijon Mustard

    1 1/2 Cup of Honey

    4 Teaspoons of Fresh Parsley,

    chopped

1/4 Cup of regular bread crumbs

    and/or Panko bread crumbs

1/2 Cup of homemade bread crumbs

    using crushed Multi-grain Crackers

    or any kind of Crackers

    Directions:

    1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a shallow baking pan with foil.

    2. In a small bowl, stir together the melted butter, Dijon mustard, and

honey. In another bowl, stir together

    the breadcrumbs and parsley. For

    the breadcrumbs, get creative and

use what you have a home. Thats what I did when I put this

    together. The homemade crushed

breadcrumbs really add a lot of extra

    flavor and texture.

    3. Brush each salmon fillet with the Dijon mixture. Then place on the

foil lined pan. Sprinkle each fillet

    with the breadcrumbs.

    4. Bake the salmon for 12-16 minutes in preheated oven. Season with salt

and pepper. You can garnish with a

    lemon wedge if you prefer.

    Enjoy!

  • Fresh Spinach and Bacon

    The St. Louis Cooks

    www.thestlouiscooks.com

Looking for that last minute, quick, throw

together, side dish? This spinach dish is for

you! On this particular night, I was

looking for something different instead of

the usual go to quick vegetables such as corn and peas. I had some fresh

spinach from Costco inside of the

refrigerator. It was time to use it as a side

dish instead of doing the normal spinach

    salad.

I threw together this recipe in about 8

minutes which is exactly how long it takes

    to cook.

Wow, it was really good! I cant say that Im a huge fan of cooked spinach, however I do like it when there are great flavors

involved. The combination of Rotel and

bacon were a perfect fit! The Rotel added

some extra zing, not to mention bacon is

always a great addition to many dishes! We

LOVE bacon! My 10 year old son even

    liked this spinach dish!

Another bonus about this dishit only takes 8 minutes! I would suggest making this dish

when everything else is ready for the table.

It is that quick and easy.

    Ingredients:

    10-15 Ounces of fresh Spinach

    (Earthbound Farm Organic Baby

    Spinach from Costco)

1/2 Can of Rotel (original and

    strained)

4-5 Slices of cooked Bacon (broken

    up in pieces)

    1-2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil

    2-3 Cloves of fresh Garlic

Salt and Pepper to taste ( We prefer

    Sea Salt.)

    Directions:

    1. Heat Olive Oil in a skillet over medium heat. Using a garlic press,

add the fresh minced garlic to the

oil. Next add the Spinach. It will

    shrink very quickly.

    2. Stir in the Rotel Tomatoes and Chilies. Then mix together the

Bacon. Add salt and pepper to taste.

    Enjoy!
