Mariposa Master Gardeners present our

2014 Spring Garden Tour Saturday, June 7, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at five homes, plus our downtown

native plant demonstration garden along Mariposa Creek

There are two homes in Bronco Hollow, and they are gardened by sisters. The first is a delight for the eyes with cozy

seating areas, clever garden art and flowers everywhere. Walk up to the viewing area with a wide horizon and find a state

-park-style plaque that gives the names of the mountains you see in the distance.

The second home is surrounded by boulder-strewn meadows and makes great use of water-wise plants. The owner’s

favorite is an elderberry that has grown to the size of a tree. She has made great use of lavender, privet, rock rose, rose-

mary, oleanders and roses.

A home on Highway 140 is a food-gardener’s dream, with extensive raised beds for vegetables, an orchard, berries, citrus

and a world-class chicken pen. Don’t miss the grotto backed by a dramatic boulder in the secluded back yard.

At the end of a winding driveway off Carlton (enjoy the untouched scenery as you drive in) is a small garden with organic

-shaped raised beds with a majority of water-wise and native ornamentals. Look closely at the walls of the beds: they’re

made of broken-up concrete from a friend’s swimming pool deck.

Off Silva is a landscape whose back yard is ruled and guarded by a magnificent oak (referred to as a “she” by the owners).

Birdhouses seem to grow naturally in a cluster of boulders, and rock roses with buckwheat do heavy duty. Notice the use

of drip irrigation systems.

At our demonstration garden along Mariposa Creek , in addition to the native plants in their spring glory, the focus will

be on being water wise, with handouts, demonstrations and ideas to help you get through this drought.
