Secret Gardens of the Emerald Coast Tour Chairmen

Send our Thanks

On behalf of the Pensacola Federation of Garden Clubs, thank you for your interest and support of our annual Secret Garden Tour. This year, we feature eight gardens - all unique and beautiful. The gardens open Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m., and will be open on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.—rain or shine. You may start at any garden that is convenient for you; you do not need to visit them in any particular order. No early birds, please.

We especially applaud the garden owners who have spent hours and hours planning and grooming their gardens for your enjoyment and education. If you have a chance, please thank them for generously opening and sharing their gardens with the public. Also, thank our ad sponsors for their financial contribution. This event is made possible through the volunteers of the various clubs in PFGC. Revenue raised is used to sponsor our community projects that include landscaping of Habitat for Humanity homes, educational and camper scholarships, school science fair awards, and community beautification. We hope you enjoy our efforts and that you will make attending the tour an annual activity. Check our website, www.pensacolagardencenter.com, for dates and other events sponsored by the Pensacola Federation of Garden Clubs.

If you wish your garden to be considered for or know of a garden worthy of being featured in our 2017 tour, please submit addresses to any member of the committee or call the Garden Center. Enjoy the tour!

Garden #1 Dave and Martha Lee Blodgett

3830 Maule Rd

Directions: Off of Bayou Blvd, take Tronjo Rd next to Trinity Presbyterian Church. Take the 3rd right on Hallmark Dr and the 3rd right again on Maule Dr. The house is 3rd on the left.

The backyard of the Blodgett home has been a work-in-progress for more than 15 years. It has evolved from a child’s play area into a garden that now features both shade and sun plantings.

The garden is anchored in the left rear corner by a custom-built pergola and in the right rear corner by a chaste tree (Vitex) that produces spectacular purple blooms in the spring. A brick border defines the overall shape of the garden, and brick walkways divide the space into separate planting areas. Yard art is scattered among the plantings, contributing an eclectic and whimsical atmosphere.

Care has been taken to mix color and textures and to include plants that attract birds and butterflies. Seven different feeders ensure a continual parade of birds. Additionally, more than 60 planters and flower pots provide the viewer with focal points of varied heights. The left side of the garden features Knockout roses planted

in front of oak leaf hydrangeas and crepe myrtles. Close by is a fifteen-foot Ligustrum that has been trimmed to tree form, providing shade for a variety of ferns, hydrangeas, and azaleas.

Finally, departing the back yard on the left side of the house, the visitor will experience the owner’s most recent venture, a raised-bed vegetable garden. Among its features is an experiment in maximizing space by growing crops such as melons and squash vertically on trellises.

A plaque hanging from the Vitex proclaims “A Garden Sings Songs of Nature’s Splendor.” All who sit on the covered patio, viewing the plants’ colors, sizes, and shapes as well as the wildlife, couldn’t agree more.

Garden #2 Fredric G. Levin

835 Tanglewood Dr

Directions: From Garden #1, turn right on Bayou Blvd, then 3rd left on Dean Rd, then left on Tanglewood Dr. Look for signs.

Timeless Tanglewood, a garden design reflecting the Edwardian period in history, was on last year’s tour and is back by popular demand. Those who enjoyed the garden last year will notice the addition by landscaper James Martin of two magnificent cannon, creating an impressive entrance.

Walk down the driveway and take an immediate right up the steps into the Organic Herb Garden. The focal point of the herb garden is a very old Manzanilla olive tree transplanted from Visalia, California. The garden contains seasonal fresh herbs and vegetables, used by visiting chefs to prepare their savory dishes. The scuppernong vine is trellised using wood posts reclaimed from the Blackwater River in Milton, Florida. No synthetic fertilizers or herbicides are used in this edible garden.

As you leave the herb garden, walk down the winding path and smell the drift roses and citrus blooms. The path is

Page 11: Secret Garden Tour 2016

lined with Italian cypress. Follow the driveway down to the west side of the house and notice the blueberry bushes on your right. Soon you will also encounter another Manzanilla olive and the entrance to the Irving Berlin Garden. The Berlin Garden is visible from inside the house through a large floor-to-ceiling window, framing an early-20

th-century

copper water fountain, the focal point of the garden. Imagine sitting inside the decorated Berlin room, watching the motion of water feature while listening to his music.

Upon exiting the Berlin Garden, you enter the Garden of

Page 12: Secret Garden Tour 2016

Amphitrite, centered around a statue of Amphitrite created by local sculptor Michael Boles. This mythological Nereid suggests wind and water in her composition and beckons to all who look upon her. The garden is recognized by the geometrically shaped stepping stones with dwarf mondograss in the joints. It hosts many butterflies and hummingbirds when all the perennials begin blooming.

To your immediate left under the residence is a sculpture named “Montana,” a vision of Master Landscape Designer James Martin of Gulfside Landscaping. James has derived a tremendous amount of design inspiration from all over the world, but Montana, his favorite state, provided the inspiration for this sculpture.

Proceed to the steps to enter the Garden Terraces. There are three terraces containing six distinct gardens, filled with an abundance of fragrant plants blooming at different times of the year. Be certain to walk to the water and look back to the house to appreciate the majesty of the wall and the custom-cut Tennessee flagstone steps and wall caps.

As you walk back up, take a detour and go to the right to find the hidden Fairy Garden and seating area under the oaks. Sit and enjoy your surroundings, and you will realize you’re being transported to a landscape in Monaco: Italian cypress, roses, and the water.

Page 14: Secret Garden Tour 2016

Directions to Garden 3: Continue on Tanglewood and take a left on Fox Rd, then 3rd left on Gerhardt Dr, left on Dean Rd, right on Dunwoody, left on N 12th Ave, right on Euclid St, then 2nd right on Clematis St. Look for signs.

# ER13007037

Walk back up the steps and proceed to the right through the portico to the entrance of the Marilyn Levin Camellia Preservation Garden. The garden hosts 42 different award-winning camellias, a pondless water feature, Admiral Semmes native azaleas, and many other horticultural varieties.

A Message from Our Presidents

The Pensacola Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc., is delighted to welcome all of you garden lovers to our sixteenth annual Secret Gardens of the Emerald Coast Garden Tour. We love that many of you make attendance of the tour an annual event! The Federation is made up of twelve separate garden circles whose members share a bond of friendship within the community in which we live, work, and garden, and whose joint labor engenders the tour. We are deeply grateful to the eight homeowners who have graciously agreed to allow the public to view their beautiful gardens. Furthermore, we would like to thank our tour sponsors—please, patronize their businesses and let them know that you saw their ads in this booklet! Finally, we want to credit all of the individual club members whose efforts, time, and talents bring about this exciting tour. We sincerely hope that you enjoy this event as much as we enjoy producing it. Lynn Manthei and Melinda Smith Co-presidents, Pensacola Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc.

My sincere appreciation to the Members of the Administrative Board for their dedication to

PFGC and the Garden Center.

Garden #3 Vicki Hall

270 Clematis St

Directions: See map inset 4 pages prior.

Tucked away in the city center, this home has a greenspace that is surprising. Windsor- block and stack-stone retaining walls, flagstone walkways lined with river rounds, and a good mix of native plants and bulbs have transformed this property to highlight the peaceful creek views from the house's huge windows. Ready to be enjoyed by a large party on the hardscapes or just by one person from the creekside meditation bench, it is visually stunning from both inside and outside.

The full-block campus of historic McIlwain Presbyterian

Church, established in 1903, holds a surprising number of

thickly planted garden spots certain to delight those who

attend the Secret Garden Tour.

Monkey grass marks a lush green entrance to the church property. The lattice cross in the corner garden is entwined by white Mandevilla that will bloom through the summer. It is surrounded by Knockout roses, pampas grass, native Nandina, sago palm, holly bushes, and petunias. Visitors are encouraged to enter the beautiful sanctuary illuminated by breathtaking stained-glass windows via the bank of stairs flanked by large pots of flax lily and smaller pots of Pacific blue junipers. This unique place of worship was built in 1923. Outside of the Fellowship Hall is a courtyard, a riot of color featuring petunias, hibiscus, lantana, Knockout roses, verbena, two small olive trees, a Japanese maple tree,

hawthorn bushes, crepe myrtle, various Ligustrum (including a curly variety), Loropetalum, and a beautiful loquat tree. To the right of the courtyard is a cool, shady garden nook with a bird bath and plantings of flowering bushes, a Japanese yew, and bedding flowers, and past this little nook to the left is an area covered with pine straw graced by a young weeping willow tree and a cross complemented by plantings of Aztec grass and begonias.

Even areas bordering the parking lot are decorated with plantings and charming statuary.

Flanking the exit from the courtyard are massive rocks anchoring red Knockout roses. Cleyera japonica bushes are planted along the low wall facing Blount Street. To continue the tour of this full-block church campus, turn right on the sidewalk, walking under the ancient live oak trees. Beds bordering the St. Augustine grass lawn hold Aztec grass and sago palms, while the half-moon beds directly south of the sanctuary steps contain pink caladiums for summer color. To the right of the church office, the Graham Building, there is a lovely granite memorial commemorating the church’s 100

th anniversary, erected in 2003, surrounded

by Ajuga and Encore azaleas. Plants to spot and enjoy to the west in a tranquil setting around the church library located in the tan brick house include pampas grass, another live oak tree that provides

The final building on the McIlwain campus is a magnificent two-story Victorian house, on the corner of Blount and 12th Avenue. Behind the low brick wall are two large sago palms and Knockout roses, and to the right of the house is a small garden containing Loropetalum, golden euonymus shrubs,

and a lavender crepe myrtle that shades the patio. On the wall next to the patio are yellow Mandevilla, phlox, and Tradescantia (wandering jew).

The profusion of plants and number of planted areas on the McIlwain Presbyterian Church campus give visitors much to appreciate.

A flagstone walkway leading to the front door offers viewing of a variety of plantings on multiple levels. The rich variety starts with a persimmon tree, ghost plants, Knockout roses, and rosemary by the street. Potato vine, gardenia, dwarf Loropetalum, holly, and a number of other dwarf shrubs are interplanted with some annuals, leading the way up the gentle slope. silver-blue agave specimen plant. A crabapple-shaded patch of Wedelia leads up the slope to holly ferns and camellias, bordered by iron plant at the property line.

Walkways on each side of the house lead through gates into a truly secret garden. The main attraction of the live-oak-shaded back yard is a jasmine-covered arbor inviting one to sit in this outdoor oasis and absorb the serenity of the surroundings. But the interest doesn’t stop there – three sets of steps lead to an upper level of the yard with pathways twining across the top, visiting bird baths and private nooks.

A bench swing covered in confederate jasmine, a well-seasoned potting bench, and a patio dining area are situated among many camellias, Fatsias, dwarf Nandinas, iron plants, Encore azaleas, lilies of the Nile, boxwood, Ajuga, Wedelia, crepe myrtle, gardenias, and hydrangeas, just to name a few. All of these offer a cool invitation to sit in the arbor or on the swing and enjoy a glass of iced tea on a warm summer day while watching the hummingbirds and butterflies visit the feeders.

This Shaker-style home offers many special touches

reflecting the owners’ Louisiana roots, evident immediately

upon entering. Recently planted, a purple fig tree and a

golden fig tree indicate the family’s love for LSU, living

representations of the venerable institution’s vibrant

signature colors. Other Louisiana touches include irises,

Aspidistra (cast iron plant), and other decorative features.

Grand oak trees shade a blue stone patio that looks out

upon the fairway. A rear courtyard is shaded by four large

Natchez crepe myrtles and is further adorned with potted

citrus, boxwoods, and agapanthus. Christina is owner of

Graceful Ground and Garden, LLC, and enjoys using the

latest designs for her annuals and perennials, along with

harvesting vegetables and herbs from her three raised

beds. She looks forward to continuing her adventures in

gardening by adding a butterfly feature.

The “house next door” belongs to Christina’s parents who

visit from New Orleans, giving them a place to visit four of

their nine grandchildren, as well as another wonderful

opportunity for grandma to do more gardening! Viewing

their Pensacola home as a site of peace and rest away

from the Big Easy, Percy chose an architect with

Windswept Landscaping, from Houston, TX, to select and

place unique horticultural elements surrounding a

magnificent deck where the family can sit to enjoy the view

of the gardens and fairway as well as each other’s

company. Impressive plantings in the front yard include a

huge, unusual Sylvester palm, and small-leafed Shishi

camellias bordering the front porch. Statuesque crinum

lilies, agapanthus, oakleaf hydrangea, a magnolia and a

cypress tree, daylilies, and Indian hawthorn surround the

back deck. The deck is accessorized by several large

containers of bright flowers. Percy keeps up with garden

supervision while she and Pawpaw enjoy their visits to

Garden # 8 Jeff’s Corner Garden 3644 Barrancas Ave

Directions: From Downtown head West on Barrancas Avenue and cross over the Bayou Chico bridge. You will pass by Outcast Bait and Tackle and shortly after that a small strip mall with Abbot’s Uniforms and Marsha’s Menagerie. Jeff’s Corner Garden is on your immediate right after the strip mall. If you pass Pensacola Cooks Kitchen you have gone too far.

Jeff’s Corner Garden is an exciting, new small-scale agricultural project started in downtown Pensacola within Innisfree’s From the Ground Up Community Garden. Jeff’s Corner Garden, a micro-enterprise initially started with funding from a grant through RESPECT of Florida, is a rare opportunity for a person with disabilities. In his “corner” Jeff Shell, a Pensacola native and 2015 recipient of this grant, is learning everything it takes to make a small, sustainable, and profitable garden come to life. Supported by his brother Jon Shell, along with family and friends, Jeff has not only found a job he loves; he is the owner of his own business! He is thrilled to offer unique and exciting fare to local area restaurants with high-quality, responsibly grown, heirloom produce and herbs. Additionally, Jeff’s Corner

Page 49: Secret Garden Tour 2016

offers internship opportunities through ARC Gateway’s PALS program at Pensacola State College.

Produce and herbs grown at the garden are distributed in two ways. Jeff’s Corner is open to the public every Saturday morning with a fresh farmstand. The corner also services local restaurants in the downtown area. Jeff and his volunteers are so thankful to those within the community who help by supporting a small local business that empowers those who often aren’t afforded entrepreneurial opportunities and encouraging local, responsible agriculture. You’ll not find another local food business that offers harvest-to-table produce, as well as delivering its highly-sought-after, freshly cut produce to its customers on a custom-designed, eco-friendly tricycle that makes weekly stops downtown!

Jeff’s Corner Garden is a non-profit organization. For more information follow Jeff’s Corner on social media: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
