Page 5: Spring Auction 2011 Program

Dear Celebrants,What a joy to be experiencing my first Stuart Auction! I have certainly hadthe opportunity to “See How Our Garden Grows,” over these last nine months. As David Mallet’s Garden Song lyrics so sweetly suggests, tonight, “Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow.” Your presence, your gifts, your bids, and your purchases enrich our community and our programs. Thank you for being here and for partnering with us in tending this wonderful school.

Kudos to this evening’s master gardeners, Cheryl Lagay and Kristin McConkey and to their fellow gardeners, our Auction volunteers. They know, as St. Rose Philippine said, that “We cultivate a very small field for Christ, but we love it, knowing that God does not require great achievements but a heart that holds nothing back.” Thank you for having amazing hearts that have held nothing back as you have worked tirelessly to make this a simply spectacular event.

To our wonderful folks in Institutional Advancement, Beth Crutcher, Beth Brown, Christina Santos, Risa Engel and Cheryl McCormick who do as the song suggests: “Plant your rows straight and long, season with a prayer and song.” Your hard work, great attitudes and faithful commitment are appreciated more than I can say.

Special thanks to our Tartantone Selects and all of the students who have kindly lent a hand. We are also grateful for the support of our faculty and staff in giving of their time and talents toward a successful Auction.

Enjoy this evening’s festivities! Bid generously and in doing so, “Inch by inch, row by row, please bless these seeds I sow!”

With love,

Dr. Patty L. Fagin, Head of School

Inspired by Stuart’s Green Initiatives

Growing Your Garden: Newspaper Pots and Sweet Pea Plantings Come make newspaper pots and plant sweet pea vines to take home and plant! Inspired by: Stuart’s Kindergarten classes’ “Kinder Garden” produced, among other things, a lettuce mix that the class sold to raise funds for Heifer International. (Teacher: Heidi Echternacht)

Butterfly Games & Building BirdhousesJoin us in a game of butterfly concentration created by the 5th grade Environmental Club or “pin the butterfly on the flower” created by Sue Plambeck (Stuart mom) and 8th grader Fayette Plambeck.

Build a birdhouse with kits prepared by Peter Dawson (Stuart dad) to take home or leave to be erected at Stuart as part of the “school yard habitat.” (Cost: $20.00 per kit)Inspired by: The Lower School Environmental Club’s projects include rejuvenating the Stuart Butterfly Garden, researching the creation of a “school yard habitat” to support native wildlife, introducing composting to Stuart and supporting the “Kinder Garden.” (Club Advisor: Elena Nickerson)

Composting Games: Does she compost or does she not . . . .?Enjoy an educational composting game and learn what composts and what does not – compete for your Green & White Day designated team and let’s see who wins this challenge.Inspired by: The Middle School Environmental Club has been studying composting this year and is working toward introducing a school-wide composting plan. (Club Advisor: Megan Block)

Build Your Own Engineering ProjectAdmire the model cities made by the Middle School “Future City” group. Construct your own engineering projects (supplies will be provided).Inspired by: The Middle School “Future City” group participated in a contest hosted by Rutgers University to build a city that would contribute to its inhabitants’ health in addition to using sustainable technologies (Advisor: Daniel Richardson).

“Upcycled” Bracelets & Auction T-shirt Design Competition Make a bracelet or other “jewelry” using plastic bags. Bring your Auction T-shirt and compete to create the best “eco-chic” Auction T-shirt design.Inspired by: Many students designed outfits and accessories from recycled materials and competed in Stuart’s first green fashion show. Some of the winning designs were displayed in TerraCycle’s Princeton store and the fashion show was featured in NJ News 12’s Garden State Green segment on March 1, 2011. (Organized by 2011 Auction Committee).

Fair Trade ActivitiesExplore Fair Trade produced games, crafts and treats organized by the 8th graders to entertain and educateInspired by: The 8th graders are involved in the Fair Trade Princeton campaign. Fair Trade is a consumer movement that seeks to justly compensate producers in developing countries. It helps farmers build sustainable businesses that positively influence their communities.

Check out our Green House Kids’ Club for 2 to 5 year olds located just outside the Athletic Center. Fun activities for this younger group will be led by Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Scheuerman.

The Auction Committee is very grateful to the teachers, parents and students for the energy and inspiration that they have contributed to the 2011 Spring Auction’s Friday Fun Night.
