TREAT YOUR TASTE BUDS

Outdoor Kitchens return to this year’s Festival with menus that highlight spring! Plans to add three new Kitchens are underway and Disney Chefs are hard at work finalizing menus. Be on the lookout for a new citrus-inspired Outdoor Kitchen. Here, you’ll be able to find the Orange Bird Souvenir Cup, which is only available during the Festival. To tempt your sweet tooth, be sure to speed on over to Taste Track, which is located next to Test Track, to try a Guest favorite—croissant donuts. And—if you love tea, you’ll want to make reservations for the Royal Tea Garden tour at the United Kingdom Pavilion. The 40-minute tour ends with—what else—tea and scones. The tour is only offered during the Festival, so make your reservation early by calling 1-407-WDW-DINE.

a variety of growing methods from hydroponics (growing plants without soil) to aquaculture, drip irrigation and ultraviolet lights. Please call 1-407-WDW-TOUR to book your tour.

TOP OFF YOUR FUN WITH TOPIARIES

“Every year, there’s a topiary that blows people away,” Darden says. “This year, I’m guessing it’s going to be Kermit the Frog. One day, we were walking near the France Pavilion and someone said, ‘it’s too bad we can’t put Kermit here.’ Then someone else added, ‘too bad we can’t have him on a bike.’ Before you know it, Kermit’s on a topiary bicycle! We had no idea how to make it work, but we did!”

Follow Steve the penguin and his adventures in Disneynature’s new film, Penguins, in theaters April 17th.

“Once in Antarctica, our film teams journaled what was going on, including descriptions of the different creatures’ personalities and behaviors looking for a breakout character. Steve, the Adélie penguin, showed up fairly early in the shooting. He was just this hyperactive little guy with a very perky personality. First of all, Adélie penguins are very small compared to Emperor penguins. We first noticed Steve walk into a group of Emperor penguins looking for his own group. It was pretty funny to watch this guy, who’s about 19” tall, walk into a crowd of birds twice his size and watch his interactions with the Emperor penguin chicks. He really was the inspiration for the film,” says Conli.

Penguins is a coming-of-age story about Steve who joins millions of fellow males in the icy Antarctic spring on a quest to build a suitable nest, find a life partner and start a family. None of it comes easily for him, especially considering he’s targeted by everything from killer whales to leopard seals, who unapologetically threaten his happily ever after.

The shooting conditions were extremely rigorous,” Conli says. “Over the course

of three years, filmmakers amassed more than 900 camera days, capturing individual stories in the chaos of colonies numbering up to 500,000 Adélie penguins. Temperatures dropped below -45 degrees Fahrenheit on several occasions, with winds twice topping 150 miles per hour while filmmakers were on location. It’s a savage environment, but it’s stunning, too. When you see how nature molds and crafts an environment that is so awesome and unique, you fall in love with it.”

Every one of the eight theatrical films released by Disneynature has made an impact on conservation. They support wildlife and environments featured in each film by donating a portion of ticket sales raised on Earth Day to a relevant environmental group. The films are also impactful in raising general audience awareness of various animals and environments facing challenges. “This is my third Disneynature project and I’m so proud of it,” Conli concludes. “I hope Penguins will show audiences just how beautiful, and yet fragile, Antarctica is. It’s a wonder and a treasure and essential to us all.”

Which came first, the chicken or the egg—or in this case, the penguin or the story? That is the dilemma filmmakers face when shooting in nature: how to create a story when you don’t know the plot, who the cast of characters are or even who your leading man will be. “We spent about three years shooting in Antarctica,” says Producer Roy Conli, “We had hundreds of hours of film to distill into a 70-minute story. With a nature film, it’s a lot like sculpting. You are taking away footage bit by bit to find and shape the story.”

“With a nature film like Penguins, it’s more as if you’re sculpting and taking away footage bit by bit to shape the story at the heart of it.”

How does a story change when told from a different point of view? That was the question that intrigued Ehren Kruger, screenwriter, when he began crafting the script for Dumbo, the new live-action film from Disney and visionary director, Tim Burton. “Dumbo (1941) has always been my favorite of the classic Disney animated films,” Kruger says. “I love its simplicity and purity. I didn’t want to change the classic story, just view it through a different lens. The original film unfolds from the animals’ point of view. I wondered what the story would be like if we looked at it from a human perspective—seeing how the discovery of a flying elephant would resonate with a human circus family.”

Max Medici (Danny DeVito), the owner of a struggling small circus, enlists former circus star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock. When they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback. Although success and fame test the charming pachyderm and the family in unexpected ways, their bonds stay strong, proving Milly’s words, “We’re all family here, no matter how small.”

A REALISTIC CIRCUS WORLD“We wanted to create a realistic circus world we could really believe existed. Animals are part of that circus world, so they had to look and feel as real as the humans in the film. Thanks to new technology and state-of-the-art visual effects, wecould achieve that sense of reality. But to create realistic animals means none of them speak,” Kruger points out. “Dumbo is incredibly expressive without using language and we stayed true to that throughout the film. That means no mean-spirited comments from matronly elephants, no wise-cracking crows and no fast-talking, cheeky Timothy Mouse. Instead, the human children become Dumbo’s confidants and the friends who discover he can fly.

“Overall, in this new film, humans are far more involved with Dumbo than in the original film where the ringmaster and clowns are only involved to the degree that they exploit Dumbo. In our film, we wanted to populate the circus with a menagerie of human performers,” Kruger explains. “Once you start thinking realistically about how this baby elephant would exist—like who would take care of him—you realize there would be an elephant trainer. Enter Holt and his family. But like Dumbo, they too, face challenges. Dumbo’s journey of empowerment becomes an inspiration and a healing force for everyone.”

EXPANDING THE STORYThe original film is one of the shortest in the Disney canon of classics, running at only about 60 minutes. “We needed to expand the story, and telling it from a human point of view also helped us do that,” Kruger explains. “The original film ends with Dumbo’s triumph. But I was always interested in what happened next. In the new film, Dumbo discovers his aerodynamic talents earlier, so that the second half of the story explores that question in more depth—both for Dumbo and the human family.”

“One of the litmus tests for me is the question ‘is this story worth retelling?’” Kruger says. “I believe Dumbo’s theme applies to any era.” Kruger uses a moment from the film as an example, “Dumbo is preparing to make his big debut. The whole world is waiting to see him. Dumbo has gone through a lot to get to this moment and he feels both incredible fear and great triumph. It’s as if two emotions are colliding, ‘I know

Dumbo Flies Again Share a story of hope and triumph when Dumbo, a new live-action film, soars into theaters March 29th.

what I’m capable of, but even now I doubt myself and wonder where this talent will take me.’”

“I think we’ve all had moments like that,” Kruger concludes. “We’ve all had to overcome self-doubt. We see ourselves in Dumbo and his flight. I think that’s why this story will always have wings.”

Let your heart soar when you share Dumbo’s story of hope and wonder with your family this spring. Then take advantage of your Cardmember savings of 10% on select purchases to bring home a memory with Dumbo apparel, toys and more at Disney store and shopDisney.com.5

“The main theme of Dumbo is that often the thing we view as our greatest weakness is also our greatest strength and what makes us unique and special.”
