They are two longtime leaders in our Practical Nursing Program here at Sitting Bull College. “Dr. Bauer and Ms. Cain have dedicated their careers to ensuring high-quality care for all individuals, particularly communities most vulnerable,” stated SBC President, Dr. Laurel Vermillion.
Through their work and teaching, they have led and trained students to become balanced, responsible, holistic health care practitioners. Students in the Practical Nursing Program have had the highest practicum pass rates in the state of North Dakota. We are very proud of D’Arlyn and Jean’s accomplishments and they will be missed. Their positions are currently being advertised. Sitting Bull College’s website has the full job descriptions and Human Resources can be contacted at 701-854-8004.

Kheya Saves Her People, written by Jessica J. Baker, SBC Native American Studies student, was published in the Tribal College Journal, Vol. 30, No. 2 - Winter 2018.
Jessica also received an honorable mention for this piece during the 2018 AIHEC Student Conference in Bismarck this past spring. To read the full article, please visit our Sitting Bull College Facebook page or the Tribal College Journal website.
Ecology Instructor, Francis Onduso, and SBC Environmental Science Student, Thomas Deville, conducted a preliminary study of the ecological distribution and diversity of mushrooms in the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Various macrofungi, commonly referred to as mushrooms, have been used since ancient times as food, as a source of natural dyes for clothing, for treating wounds, and for providing substances used as remedies to fight off infections. In nature, mushrooms are ecologically important because they have saprobic, parasitic and mycorrhizal relationships with plants. Native Americans have valued mushrooms for food as well as for their medicinal and hallucinogenic properties, but little information is available on either the occurrence or the use of mushrooms by the tribes of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.
Prior to the present study, it was hypothesized that the four major types of habitats (upland forest, riverine forest, floodplain and grassland habitats) on the reservation would be characterized by significant differences in mushroom species richness (number of species) and diversity. To assess these patterns, transect lines 10 m wide by 100 m long were established in examples of the four different habitats, and mushrooms were surveyed in July and August of 2017. At least 22 species were recorded, and differences in their distribution among the four habitats were apparent.

Sitting Bull College was awarded $250,000 for a shared equipment program designed to reach younger new farmers and ranchers on Standing Rock. The College was also awarded $200,000 for an Ag Center that includes a covered heated arena, office space, and a small kitchen and gathering room for workshops. These awards came from the SBC Agricultural Division’s proposal to the Keepseagle Fast-Track Grants to support Native American farmers and ranchers grant program. Margaret Knox, Agricultural Division Director, suggested a focus on “Revitalizing the Sustainable Agricultural Practices of the Oceti Sakowin People on Standing Rock.” This proposal builds on the SBC’s history of outreach, education and research on the Standing Rock reservation.
The goal of this project is to help enrolled members of the Standing Rock Reservation to create and/or expand their sustainable farming and ranching capabilities, and then market their produce at the local level, but also in a wider distribution area. The college will engage community members in hands-on interactive outings and workshops focused on livestock care, organic gardening, soil and water management and conservation, precision agriculture, value added farming and ranching techniques, and marketing strategies. The program will also include diet, nutrition, and traditional food storage and preparation. Joe Dunn, Farmer/Rancher Program Assistant, can be reached at 701-854-8068 for questions or interest.
