PAFA is pleased to present a new hybridstudio/online intensive with acclaimed artistStuart Shils, combining dynamic studio work on location at PAFA and online tutorial and critiques pre- and post-workshop.

Designed for intermediate/advanced artists, designers and architects, the focus of this workshop will be the visual concerns fundamental to making, perceiving and thinkingabout art, and understanding that the graphiclanguage of abstraction is the source of all visual power. Themes will include examination ofwith interiority of the “visual moment,” graphicresponse as improvisational yet analytical commentary, the role of the camera/phoneviewfinder as a tool for cultivating closer visualawareness and graphic coherence, and an in-depth exploration of various drawing languages.

Through sustained studio work using drawing/painting media on paper, students will learn torecognize the intimate relationship between observation and abstract structure.

Projects will include working from the life modelwith a focus on graphic abstraction rather than

anatomy; outdoor drawing with pencil and camera to consider questions of seeing; and engaging with master paintings for purposes of interpretation, rather than copying. The final dayof the workshop will consist of open studio time with extended one-on-one discussion and critique.

In advance of the workshop, Stuart will conductonline meetings with each student via Skype todiscuss their background and interests, and toprepare them for the studio experience. Following the workshop, monthly follow-up conversations via Skype will serve to sustain andexpand the work done in the workshop. Studentswill be encouraged to maintain community byway of group online conversation and discussion.Thursday – Sunday, April 14 – 179 a.m. – 5 p.m.Tuition: $1,500Register by: April 1 (space is limited)

Designed to help you achieve yourartistic goals, the program provides a structured curriculum of classes in logical sequence to build your basic skills and the confidence necessary to move forward in any artistic direction.

Look for the icon next to courses thatmeet the first-level requirements.

Visit pafa.edu/ce for more information and call the Continuing Education office at 215-972-7632 to discuss what the Core Curriculum Program can do for you.

CE CORE CURRICULUM PROGRAM For years I’d been taking art classeswhenever I was able. I chose coursesbased on external criteria like location, availability or the reputation of the instructor. Over time I realized that I needed to study art-making more purposefully to address my intrinsic deficits, build skills in a

logical sequence, and develop a deeper understanding of the relationships among the four major disciplines. The CE Core Curriculum provided just the right structure and support. The guidance and feedback of theCE staff and PAFA faculty made a real impact. I highlyrecommend the CE Core for all who want to build a solidgrounding for future development.
