WOW what a winter here and almost everywhere in the eastern part of both Canada
and the U.S. The radio tells me that this February has been the coldest since they have been keeping records. I don’t know if that is accurate, but it certainly keeps the car enthusiast out of the garage unless they have a really good heater. Would somebody explain Global Warming to me again, I had been looking forward to living in a warmer area, not learning to build igloos. (It’s called “Climate Change” - Ed.)
But now it’s March, we have set our clocks forward on the 8th and things should be warming up. Car events are starting to come out from under the drifts.
We look forward to the Canadian International Motorama Custom Car and Motorsports Expo, scheduled for March 13-15 at the International Center. This is the survivor of the annual March car show in Toronto plus the addition of Inside Track’s motorsports extravaganza. David Weber, Greg MacPherson and Gary Challice have been working long hours to bring this show back to previous glory. They promise many new things and no American Graffiti stars from a previous era. Both Todd Bodine NASCAR truck series champion and Courtney Hansen television personality and Powernation host have confirmed their appearances.
Also at the show will be the Canadian Motor Speedway exhibit, one of the most exciting projects to come down the pike in a long time. Destined to be the largest most advanced speedway and entertainment center in Canada once the builders clear all the red tape hurdles. Once built we will finally have a world class ¾ mile banked oval and a 2 mile road course initially capable of seating 65,000 fans. Many other features will be built into this facility. You will also have a chance to look over Jeff Gordon’s final season 3M cup car which will be on display in their booth. Lots more new things to see during this years Motorama.

Then March 29th it’s off to the Rodmasters swap meet in Ancaster.
April 10th and 11th will be Performance Improvements Two Day Salebration. Come out for the bargains, kick start your projects and help them celebrate the start of their second 50 years in business. They have numerous new products to help you with your car fun.
Next up will be Rob Potter’s Drag Strip Memories show being held at Hamilton’s Warplane Heritage Museum on April 19th. Your chance to see both old and new nostalgia drag cars, thousands of photos from back in the day, meet some of the early Canadian drag racing legends, both Barry Poole and John Petrie will be there, plus you get to see some of the neatest old warplanes as well.
Other events we are looking forward to this season. Cruise nights, most starting in May. Classics in the Square will be in Mississauga, July 5th. Really an interesting venue, with great entertainment. Jeff Norwell’s Jalopy Jam Up is another don’t miss event, traditional hot rods and custom cars in a frontier town with live bands. That’s August 14-15. Following that will be Motor City Car Clubs August 22-23 Autofest in Oshawa. Then up comes the Roadmates Corn Roast on Labour Day.
In between we look forward to taking Project 33 to the drags and thrashing it on the local road courses and everywhere else possible.
There are hundreds of events this year be sure to take in as many as possible. Finally the season has started! Get out there and drive, we hope to see you on the road with your pride and joy. •

Canada’s own Jim Thomson out of Niagara Falls, Ontario, was crowned the Performance Improvements Driver of the Year, lubricated by Royal Purple in the
2014 Joe’s Transmission TNT Super Series.
After a season filled with multiple late round appearances, Thomson earned the title with an impressive average winning package of 0.035 seconds to take home a 2015 Royal Purple sponsorship valued at over $2,500.
Thomson missed the first race of the season at Empire Dragway, but didn’t let that slow him down. He went rounds in eliminations at all but two races in 2014.
Couple that with a win at Lancaster on August 22 and a runner-up that same weekend at Empire on August 24, and he found himself in a tie atop the Driver of the Year standings with the 2014 TNTSS points champion, Jason Vitez. The tiebreaker was the driver who went rounds at more events in 2014.
The Driver of the Year award showcases the most consistent sportsman driver. It is based solely on a driver’s package (reaction and ET), but only from rounds they win. Breakouts and red-light wins don’t count, so the winner has to be good on the tree AND good at the stripe.
There were 53 drivers in the 2014 TNT Super Series yet only 10 qualified for this award by the end of the season. That’s how competitive it is.
“I have to say that since I have been running the Joe’s Transmission TNT Super Series, I am getting more comfortable running these tracks and the other competitors,” said Thomson. “My car ran good this year with a few minor problems, but other than that we did okay.”
Thomson went on to say how winning Driver of the Year is most certainly a highlight of his racing career. “I have to thank Performance Improvements and Royal Purple for supporting such a unique award, along with all of the sponsors who contribute to this series. Also Ted Barnes and Joe Boniferro for the work they do to put it all together. Thanks to my family RaeAnn, Jim Jr. and Curt for their support. My brother Rob Thomson (Four Seasons Roofing) and Joe Boniferro (Joe’s Transmission) for their continued support. It is very much appreciated. And I can’t leave out Kevin Goodacre for being there to line me up.”

T here was a time, back before many of us can remember, when
building a fun car to break a few rules with was fast, easy and cheap. All it took was an old body, easily purchased at the local scrap yard, some frame rails, and whatever motor you had lying around. You could put it all together in your parents’ driveway for the price of a pair of new shoes, and all it took was a good wrench set, a little help from a buddy and some basic welding gear.
It was the 1940s and 1950s – the golden age of Hot Rodding. It was a time before fuel injectors, billet parts and even slicks. It was all about four-bangers and flatheads, open headers, and little or no insurance.
Once a year on a beach on the southern tip of New Jersey, that era still lives. The Race of Gentlemen (TROG) sees a hundred or so traditional hot rods take to the sand for two days of speed, sun, fun, salt water, friendly competition, and plenty of noise.
TROG is quickly becoming one of the most interesting gatherings of retro-minded gearheads around. Effectively, the cars have to be pre-war, and can have no aftermarket parts either. They are far from original, it is just that any of the modifications have to be of the period. Hand-painted signs and vintage tents go a long way to helping turn the clock back as well. And with plenty of denim and peaked caps even most of the participants clothing seems authentic.

Heck, even the town is period correct. Wildwood, New Jersey, is a wonderful inti-mate, fully restored kitschy, neon-lit 1950s beach town. Since The Race takes place in early October, the summertime resort com-munity is almost shut down for the season. As a result, virtually every car (or motor-cycle) on the streets is either a competition vehicle, hot rod or custom – driven to the event by an enthusiastic spectator.
There are parties, barbecues, plenty of
crab cakes, and tons of friendly like-minded people from all over the world who are in-terested in the history of hot rodding. Little impromptu workshops break out as a crowd gathers around one or the other racers, as they tear down their motors to make them race ready.
TROG is a brainchild of a man called Melvin Stultz III, who calls himself, simply “an artist.” He’s a paint-spattered, bearded ball of energy. He’s also got big plans for
vintage beach racing in America, planning to take the concept to California and is even making inroads in Japan as well.
TROG was timed to take advantage of the fact that with the Rodders Journal Revival in nearby Baltimore and the Carlisle Fall Swap Meet in Pennsylvania, a serious Hot Rodder could have a pretty fascinat-ing week of car-themed vacation south of the border. So next fall, no excuses: Hit the road, or the beach. •

Nostalgia drag racing is one of the fastest growing segments of drag racing. In Ontario, this is evident by
the success and growth of The Ontario Nostalgic Drag Racers.
In the United States, it is gaining in leaps and bounds, with new cars and lots of old cars being restored. We are always amazed, at every track we go to, at how many cars we’ve never seen before. The NHRA has nostalgia events coast to coast, with packed grandstands and pits, sometimes to the point of having to turn cars away.
At these Hot Rod Reunion Races, they also have a legends row with the cars, drivers and my favourite, the old push trucks, the pioneers of the sport. At Bowling Green, Kentucky, it took me four
hours to cover the row, where if you like stories about the good old days, there is certainly no shortage.
Craig Murray (Flapper) a member of the Roadmates Car Club, out of Mississauga, Ontario, built his very first gasser two years ago. It’s a straight axle, big-block four-speed, wheel standing, very competitive car. It’s become very popular in New York, Kentucky, Pennsylvania (just to name a few) - partially because of Flapper’s insistence that the car be period correct. Of course, it’s also the four speed and his ability to “bang the gears” that people love. Cars like this might not have the consistency and tend to break parts from time to time, but they are a thrill to watch.
Now, to the point of this story. We
travelled to Thompson Raceway Park last September to attend the Gasser Nationals. Thompson, just east of Cleveland, is a neat old drag strip with a lot of history. Photographers actually stand on the grass, two feet above the sunken drag strip, a very different view.
We pulled in Thursday afternoon and parked beside an Ohio legend, Gene Schwartz. Gene is an N.H.R.A. National record holder from 1964 - 1967 and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted with his brother Glen, in 2013 as Blues Artists. Gene has a couple of 51 Chevys, one hard top, one slant back, both outstanding examples of period correct, vintage drag cars. This particular weekend, Gene was racing the hard top.

We have known Gene for the past few years, as both Flapper and Gene are members of the G.R.S. (Gasser Racing Series), a great series running events out of Lancaster and Empire Dragways, in western New York. High car counts and good competition make for a great day of racing.
We travel with many G.R.S. members to major nostalgia events, and man, the fun never stops. It’s one big social event interrupted by a few passes down the strip.
If anyone breaks or has a problem, these racers will jump right in to help, a nice atmosphere to be in. The September Thompson race was no different than any other.
Gene Schwartz proposed a grudge match against Flapper, a best of 4 time trials
over two days. Both cars and drivers are evenly matched, Flapper running a “Brian Kresman” built 427, and Gene running a “Hutter Engines” small block, both were stick cars and both running close in elapsed times. This was shaping up to be an interesting weekend.

Friday morning, we all pitted in the G.R.S. section, Gene in his reserved spot where he displays his cars, his guitar and signs autographs all day. As you can see in the photograph below, Gene has another 1951 Chevy he uses as a fun tow vehicle and street car, what showmanship!
Round 1: When Gene and Flapper entered the staging lanes, the crowds headed to the stands and lined up along the fence. Once lanes were selected, photographers set up on Gene’s side, to capture his famous wheel stand. He did not let them down. Gene had the lead until about half track, round one to Flapper. The crowd loved it.
Round 2: Flap had to race to catch up and passed Gene again, at about the same spot, posting his best ET to date, exactly what he needed to do against Mr. Schwartz.
Round 3: Saturday, both cars staged, but I noticed a number of the photographers had come over to Flapper’s lane. Both cars left hard, both pulled the wheels. Gene came down out of the groove and was forced to back off, round three to Flapper.

Round 4: This time Gene chose Flapper’s lane, keept the wheels down a bit and turned his all time Thompson Raceway best, ET at 10.29, round four to Gene.
The grudge match was now in the books. It was so nice to see these two smiling and laughing, after each round.
Plans are underway to see more of these matches in 2015. But that’s not the end of the story, we still had the first round of eliminations.
I think Gene and Flapper tried real hard not to get paired for the round, neither wanting to put the other out.
However, they had to run each other Saturday evening and Flapper took the win. Flapper went on to the semi-finals and finished in the money.
All in all, one great weekend. We can’t wait until next year! •

New book offers unique “then and now” look at legendary drag cars

The world is always going to have people who are haters. People that see something
different, or something unexpected, then turn their noses up and grimace with distain. They will always be afraid of the different, the untested or the never been done before. These are people who shy away from anything and everything that looks different, sounds different and just doesn’t really fit into their preconceived notions of the way the world should be. We call them haters.
If you’re going to have to hate, hate these people. Because there are people out there who see the world differently, and we shouldn’t get in their way. There are people who don’t break out a cookie cutter every time the world throws them a problem. Who have creative approaches to solving problems. And they’re not always conventional. They’re going to be people out there holding round pegs trying to fit into a square-hole world.
Meet Mark Bovey. He’s a round peg.
Mark Bovey joked about entering his ‘71 GMC pickup in Targa Newfoundland and came home hauling a medal for second place in the Classic category, plated his first year out and won Targa Rookie of the Year.
For five days straight, this former farm truck, loaded with a LS427 V8, roared its fury and rage through the winding Newfoundland coast – 1,800 km of the most gruelling endurance racing you can find in North America. Through roads that wind like they were drawn by a six month old who was just given a crayon for the first time. Through dirt, tarmac, bridges, dips and pot holes the size of a Honda. One third of competitors don’t finish.
This is a truck he’s had since he was 14 years old. Started with a 4,400 lb bucket of recyclable steel and a box full of bolts that his father spent $100 on. Took eight years of weekends and evenings before it became roadworthy.
It was stripped, sanded, welded and hammered into shape in his parents’ garage. Then a 427 was dropped in, some suspension and some brake work was
done. It went drag racing and for a high-speed run on the Maxton Monster Mile. Then auto-crossing it went. The first day through the pylons the farm truck danced. Then came bigger Wilwood brakes and a NASCAR-style steering rack, FIA race seats and approved six-point roll cage.
Targa was entered and it was go time. Time to hit the racetrack for some Darwinian track testing, basically drive hard till you break stuff, find weakest link and fix it. Made sense to shake the truck down in a safe place, away from cliffs and, well the ocean. Targa Truck was quite the sight on its inaugural run at Mosport Driver Development track last May for a shake-down at an SPDA organized event. Andy and Rob McJannett became instant fans. Sure Targa Truck was a nutty idea, but an amazing kind of nuts, beer nuts, ones you just have to have more of. So Targa Truck had its first sponsor, the beer nut lovers at Performance Improvements.
Performance Improvements was instrumental in sourcing specialty parts, including parts they didn’t stock or carry.

That’s the beauty of being sponsored by a couple of guys who know how to find and source anything automotive. The Safecraft fire suppression system was custom ordered, a Northern Rad, Wilwood brakes, RaceQuip Harnesses, Compete RaceQuip driving suit, Electrical Safety System (Taylor Vertex), Grant steering wheel, Auto Meter Sport Comp II Gauges, close to a metric ton of DEI heat shielding, MSD starter, plus all the Royal Purple gear oil, tranny oil and power steering fluid Targa Truck could drink.
The Kickstarter campaign started things rolling and then came the call from the
Discovery Network. Their mega successful TV show Mega Speed was going to fly to Newfoundland and put 20 minutes aside to cover the Targa Truck story.
Momentum didn’t stop. Targa Truck then caught the eye of GM Performance and Kevin Wilson of Scoggin Dickey Parts Centre of Texas. Kevin (of SDPC) loves all things LSX and has a soft spot for seeing the LSX Race Block they sourced being used in a GMC truck. Targa Truck now had a Texas-sized Scoggin Dickey and Chevrolet Performance decal on its 8” bed. Next stop, Newfoundland.
Once the truck was mostly ready, Targa
Truck was loaded onto the transporter and off to the east coast she went. It arrived three days late with only 10 minutes left before tech inspection shut down. That’s a little close. Before you finish a race, first you must start.
No one had ever attempted the Targa in a pickup before. So, there was no one for someone with a 43-year-old GMC long box to call for advice or help. Then there were the murmurs, the laughs, the head scratchers and the people who just didn’t get it.
“Nice tow vehicle, where’s your race car?” they joked.

“That’s about as aerodynamic as my barn!” someone else said.
There is 1,800 km of winding Newfoundland roads to navigate, 40 stages of competition and five days to do it. It is a test of grit, resolve and determination. Stuff breaks and you need to be able to fix it fast. And stuff on the Targa Truck broke. Repairs were done after race day till after bedtime and on the side of the road while gridding at the start lights.
It’s a grind, but somehow Mark and his co-driver Miles Markovic dug deep and somewhere inside them was a heart-beat
pumping high-octane fire forcing them forward until the finish of the final stage of the final leg. There were 35 cars competing in Targa Newfoundland. To put it into perspective how few people that is, more people will be climbing to the peak of Mt. Everest that week than had competed in a Targa all year-long.
On day two Targa Truck was in third place in front of a Chevrolet Corvette. On day three it passed a veteran 911 to second place. By day five all the cars drivers and co-drivers have been through a lot. Supplies of duct tape and zip ties were running short and so are tempers. Rules were being read
and reread. A penalty on Day two suddenly became a big deal when you’re seconds ahead or behind a competitor.
Keep in mind, by this point of the race, all the cars were virtually dropped into a paint shaker for five days straight, 11 hours a day. Even the best prepared cars were being shaken apart at the seams. Targa Truck was also getting stressed.
On a transition to another stage, the transmission started a heart-wrenching whine. If it was internal, then this was it for the Targa Truck. It limped into a rest stop with other competitors. This is where you realize, over the trials and tribulations of the

week, competitors have become more than close friends, but family. Family willing to drop their equipment, climb under your car, dig into their own toolboxes and hand you the last of their supplies to get you to the starting line.
The nut holding the driveshaft cup to the pinion had come loose. Had the nut fallen off, the Targa Truck would have been on a flat bed. Had the nut come lose during competition, the gears would have ripped themselves to shreds. Had there not been other competitors with tools, expertise and differential fluid on hand, Targa Truck’s journey would have ended.
The East Coast is a cruel and unforgiving
place. The harder the environment, the stronger the bonds of the people become. If you ever find yourself in need, and there’s a Newfoundlander nearby, you won’t be in need for long. They never turn their backs on anyone.
You may not understand how or why a 43-year-old farm truck made its way to the rock. How it won the hearts and minds of competitors and race fans. You may have even been one of those people that thought it was out of place and made too much noise. You may have even laughed. If you show up to Targa Newfoundland in a Subaru or a Porsche, you might as well be invisible. But even haters couldn’t ignore it. And when
that glorious finish line came on that final day, and the Targa Truck thundered across the line, you couldn’t help but cheer for it. TARGA TRUCK!
The Targa Truck story is one of inspiration. One of possibility. One of misfits overcoming the odds. Silencing the critics. And winning people over. We need to be thankful for people like Mark Bovey, let him be a reminder to you of what is possible. And Targa Truck? Let Targa Truck inspire you to answer the next “why?” with “Why the dACz not?”

Usually the signs are easy to spot: a certain someone spending quality time in the garage, the distinctive clang of a socket wrench being pulled out of a tool chest and greasy fingerprints on the towels in the guest bathroom.
But sometimes our drivers try to keep things on the down low by stuffing automotive enthusiast publications – such as this fine magazine – under the couch, or telling us that a “surprise project for the back yard” is keeping him in the garage. Yeah, right.
Of course, they don’t know our little secret. We actually get a kick out of witnessing the renewal of their gearhead gusto, mechanic mania... that vehicle love that defies common sense at the best of times. At the worst of times, we’re better off backing away and heading to a friend’s place for coffee. Maybe even a long weekend.

Lip SpoilerA pimple, cold sore or misplaced piercing.
OdometerThe new smartphone app that keeps track of how much you’re owed.
Recall NoticeA trailer for that new Schwarzenegger movie.
Running BoardsPieces of a raft that won’t stay together when sharks are circling.
Safety SwitchA manoeuvre used by card dealers to make sure you don’t get a winning hand.
Serpentine BeltThis year’s must-have accessory that ties a whole outfit together.
Shift LinkageThe former spokesperson for the ShamWow.
Suicide DoorsSuper-spicy entryways. Usually found in homes with terra cotta flooring and stucco walls.
Thrust WasherThe largest whirling brush in the car wash, known to work off patches of clearcoat in a matter of seconds.
Timing TabAgreeing to pay for drinks until a certain time, like 9:17 p.m.
Winter DriverThe type of club used when playing snow golf.
