Who’s Who in Holy Trinity Parish

Dear Parishioners,
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
Sometimes it is the small things that really matter - and so it was during the
week of prayer for Christian Unity when parishioners from Holy Trinity and
Loughlinstown parish attended each others churches and exchanged greetings.
Lent, Holy Week and Easter
I am delighted to say that the neighbouring parishes will once again link up for
services in Holy Week. We are delighted that the Bishop of Meath will address
us at some of these services. Full details may be found on page 18.
The Carry Centre
It was a proud day for our parish as the President of Ireland presided over the
opening of the Carry Centre. A full report may be found on page 6. I wish to
place on record my sincere thanks for all those involved in the days festivities.
Congratulations
To Sean Purser and Alexander Fives who were confirmed by the Archbishop on
February 1st in St Brigid's Church, Stillorgan. On February 8th we in Holy Trinity
had an opportunity to celebrate with them as they received Holy Communion in
their Parish Church for the first time.
With every good wish,
From the Rector
Hospital Visiting
The Rector would appreciate being told if parishioners are in hospital or
going into hospital, and will be pleased to offer pastoral support.
A selection of prayers is available from him or in Church.

News from the Select Vestry
Young Families
The Vestry will hold a lunch for young families on March 8th in the Carry
Centre. More information from the Rector.
Easter General Vestry
The parish ‘A.G.M.’ will be held on Sunday 22nd March at 11.45am in the
Carry Centre. All are very welcome to attend.
The Vestry will meet at 8.00pm in the Carry Centre on Monday 23rd
March.
My favourite plant is the Fuchsia. It is has such wonderful pretty flowers in an
amazing rage of colours, from white and pastel, to pink, orange, red and deep
purple. Blossom sizes can vary from very tiny to really large double blooms, and
each flower looks like a little ballet dancer.
Trailing Fuchsias are ideal for hanging baskets. Upright Fuchsias are perfect for
patio containers. Put 3 Fuchsia plants in a large container to give the appearance
of one large plant. Feed weekly during flowering. Hardier Fuchsias can be grown
as hedges.
Most Fuchsias are native to South America and will grow outdoors in mild
weather. Others survive by dying back and reshooting from below ground in the
spring. Cuttings may be taken in spring, summer or autumn. While fuchsias are
fairly easy to grow, vine weevil grubs can eat away the roots, but this is usually
only a problem with container grown plants.

Michael D’Alton: Chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur
An Irish witness to D-Day was Sub-Lieutenant Michael d’Alton, he joined the
Royal Navy in 1942. One must doubt whether, when Napoleon established the
Legion d’Honneur in 1802, he envisaged that it might be conferred on an
Irishman in British forces landing American tanks on French soil to help defeat
Germany, but such was the case when on 26th January former RNVR Sub-
Lieutenant Michael d’Alton received the insignia of Chevalier, or Knight, of the
Order from the Ambassador of France for his bravery on D-Day over 70 years
ago.
Accompanied by his son Mark and his daughter Sonda, he declared to an
interviewer at the same time as he emphasized that Hitler had to be stopped
that war was a terrible waste.
It is some years now since Michael came up the aisle with his medals gently
clanking and hung his stick on the neck of the eagle, which he looked straight in
the eye, before reading the lesson at morning service in Holy Trinity on
Remembrance Sunday, but he thanked the Ambassador in a firm voice as he
gratefully received the honour on behalf, he said, of many friends and
contemporaries who lost their lives that day.
Michael brings to twelve the number of Irish men and women who have been
honoured with the award.

The newly refurbished Carry Centre, the parish centre of Holy Trinity, Killiney, will provide
a wonderful service to the whole community, President Michael D Higgins said at its official
opening on Sunday January 25th. The President praised the parish for its invitation to a wide
range of groups to use the centre and paid tribute to the generosity of spirit and resource
shown by parishioners in taking on the project.
The refurbished Carry Centre was blessed by the Archbishop of Dublin. He gave thanks for
all who had worked on the project and asked blessings on all the people who would use the
centre for many years to come.
In his speech, the President said he was struck by the explicit invitation to all who may come
to use the Carry Centre. He said that as President he had the pleasure of visiting places all
over the country to see the efforts being made by people of different backgrounds to take
hold of public space. He added that this taking hold of public space as a result of groups
working together could be incredibly empowering. He noted that Killiney usually featured in
the property pages of the newspapers rather than elsewhere but he said communities like
Killiney were trying to renew themselves. Speaking of the importance of community he said,
in the current circumstances, it was necessary to value everything done in the public space
particularly as “we are coming out of a period of extreme individualism”. He said
intergenerational solidarity was very important and that was recognised by the range of
activities for young and old which could happen in the Carry Centre.
“All this is part of living and it is profoundly human… This centre will perform a wonderful
service and I want to pay tribute to the generosity of the community in terms of the
resource they have provided and I am delighted that so many of you are here, including so
many people who are involved in public life,” President Higgins stated.
In welcoming the guests, the Rector said the Carry Centre had been a focal point for the
parish and community since 1958 when it was opened by the then Rector, Canon Austen
Carry. Wearing the frock coat worn by Canon Carry back in 1958, Mr Sloane thanked all
who were involved in the refurbishment project hoped that the fruits of their labour would
be a catalyst for community activity for many years to come.

A day in the life of the team at AIB, Dalkey
My appointment to AIB Branch in the beautiful village of Dalkey in mid summer
2014 was certainly a day to remember. With a new structure and a new team
(pictured above), every day since then has brought new and exciting challenges.
From the time we start work in the morning until we lock up in the evening, it is
a team effort. We aim to get as much 'back office' work completed as possible
before opening our doors for the day. Meetings, training, organising our
machines and cash, making sure the banking hall is looking fresh & clean, ready
for the day – all to be completed before 10am when the real business happens.
Quick Banking options and a new look & feel to the banking floor now allow us
to spend more time assisting our customers with their transactions and queries,
choosing the best possible option for each one individually. Our aim is to have 2
staff on the floor at all times.
Once the doors open, anything can happen. Quiet days in Dalkey Branch are
rare but, like any business, we do have quiet periods. We use this time to get
out and about to visit our customers, arrange events that will involve the local
community, work with local schools on youth initiatives and generally work to
understand the needs of our customers and the community and how we, as a
team at AIB Dalkey, can best help them into the future.
When the doors close in the evening, we call all staff together for a quick
meeting to discuss how the day went; how did we best help our customers that
day; what did we learn; any complaints we need to work through. Thankfully,
with our focus less on desk, paperwork & screens, we are finding every day
more fulfilling and rewarding.
I hope to get a chance to meet all of our existing and future customers in AIB
Dalkey Branch over the next few months.

Branch Manager: AIB Bank, Dalkey

Drawing is the basis of all endeavours in the field of Art & Design. The teaching and
encouragement of art from primary school is important in developing visual awareness.
Children love working with line and colour. Their response to the world around them is
very spontaneous, capturing basic elements in a bold and expressive manner. As they
mature they become more considerate and more aware of the elements of proportion. I
firmly believe that anyone can learn to draw. It is a skill not much different from learning to
write. Some learn more quickly than others and we say they are more talented. But the
most important element in learning is interest and application, as in any field of human
endeavour.
Drawing teaches us about the world around us - you never really know a thing until you
have drawn it. This sustained observation teaches you proportion, the elements of form and
form is the shape of content. The process is one of continual learning, the more we draw
the more we learn about the world around us and how best to express it. Our drawing
style develops and as we grow older the patterns of behaviour we have developed become
more fixed in our brain so that learning new behavioural techniques becomes more difficult.
In art and design work the challenge to continue to develop new ideas and approaches is
always there to discourage stagnation.
I have taught printmaking/etching for most of my teaching career at NCAD. Etching is very
much a drawing medium involving line, tone and texture. Because the image you draw on
the plate becomes a mirror image on the printed paper you have to learn to develop the
ability to work in reverse on the plate. This forces you to rethink your drawing technique.
For example right handed people will sketch shaded areas from lower left to upper right
and this looks different on the print where the lines appear from lower right to upper left.
Other idiosyncrasies arise. I developed a tendency to draw perpendicular lines with a
distinct lean to the left. When reversed on an etching proof the fault becomes more
obvious . My brain had become used to the left leaning buildings but it immediately became
aware when they were leaning to the right. It is always advisable to have a mirror in the
studio to look at your work in reverse! This is something I remember from my art teacher
in St Columba's College - none other than Oisin Kelly.

I took up a new hobby as I approached my 50th birthday – cycling! I was following my
husband, Alan, who had started cycling a year previously and he gently coaxed me into
believing that I could also get the cycling bug. So one Saturday morning, a bit reluctantly, I got
onto the bike and despite a bit of huffing and puffing I ended up having a cappuccino on Bray
seafront and feeling a real sense of achievement. Since then we regularly do short runs (usually
with the lure of a scone or a sandwich) to places like Greystones, Enniskerry, Clontarf, Howth or
Marlay. As fitness levels have increased we have challenged ourselves a bit more and done
some of the An Post cycling events during the summer in Sligo, Waterford and the Burren
as well as cycling holidays abroad. Cycling really does blow the cobwebs away and although
the hills can be tough the exhilaration of the down hills make it worthwhile!

Parish News & Forthcoming Events
General Synod: The Rector shall be in Armagh for the General Synod from
Thursday 7th to Saturday 9th May. The parish will also be represented by Edgard
Hall and David Millar who both serve as diocesan representatives.
World Day of Prayer: This years’ service will be held on Friday 6th March at
11am. The Holy Trinity will host the service which will be followed by
refreshments in the Carry Centre. All welcome.
EXTEND Exercise Programme: The programme was developed for men &
women over 60 and less able bodied people. The programme consists of
recreational exercises to music, all done while seated. The classes provide a
great social opportunity to all who partake in the activity. If you are interested in
finding out more please see the notice in Church or speak to the Rector.
Keep Fit: Sadly all good things come to an end and the Killiney Keep Fit group
which was started by Babs Smythe over 40 years ago may have run its course
BUT it could be regenerated if there was enough new interest within the
community. The Keep fit has always been a group drawn from the
neighbourhood and across the community and was run on a voluntary basis so
that over the years it has been able to support many charities to the tune of
over €50,000. This is a proud record for the ladies a well as the benefits of
improved health and fitness! Imelda has been keeping the books since 1997
and organising things together with Jasone and they are willing to continue if
there is enough interest. Mondays at 10.00am & the cost is 20 Euros for 8
weeks - 75minute work out which can be taken at you own pace. For more
information contact Imelda on 087 6810700 or Jasone 087 2706831.

Last July we went on a week's cruise on the Danube and visited Hungary,
Slovakia and Austria. Our Motor Vessel was Seranade 2, which carried approx.
130 passengers and a large crew.
We visited various towns and cities on our way up and down the Danube and
one of the interesting cities we visited was Bratislava, formerly called Pressburg
up until just after the First World War when it became the capital of
Czechoslovakia. It became Slovakia's capital in 1993 following the Velvet
Divorce from the Czechs. It is the only national capital that borders two
independent countries, Austria and Hungary.
We had an excellent guided tour of Bratislava including the old town and the
Castle (pictured). The Castle was first constructed in the 10th century but was
destroyed and rebuilt many times and lay in ruins from 1811 until rebuilt in the
1950's.
