A MESSAGE FROM JENNIFERWhen looking back on this season for the Children’s Chorus of Mary-land, I notice something. It is the sense of community that links every aspect of this organization.

The parents are helpful, flexible, and undeniably supportive. The fac-ulty and staff, whose skills and personality truly amaze me, work as a unit in which all parts are equal. And lastly, the students provide the musicianship, professionalism, and good humor that are so important in a first-rate children’s choir.

Betty Bertaux founded the Children’s Chorus of Maryland in 1976, and because of her vision, musical and educational expertise, and love of children, this children’s choir is a true community. I am hon-ored to be able to conduct such a phenomenal group of young people who have a great passion for music.

This season, the students in this community have been interviewed by the Baltimore Sun, sung in an opera, changed locations, performed with a big band, lent their voices in song at the Basilica, and much more. It is “with laughter and singing” that this community has done it all.

Next season, the Children’s Chorus will have a newly renovated home, and a multitude of appearances and opportunities that are sure to be both memorable and exciting. As always, the winter and spring concerts will be at this beautiful location, the Gordon Center. May all members of this community continue to move forward “with laughter and singing.”

A MESSAGE FROM BETTYI’m so proud of the CCM children and how effortlessly they made the transition from one director to another this year when I got sick. I’m equally proud of Jennifer Miller, who, with absolutely no notice, stepped up to the plate, and has done such an outstanding job in leading all three CCM choirs. I’ve known Jennifer since she was 6 years old when she first auditioned for CCM. It’s such a pleasure to know her as a consummate musician and teacher, and a person of the highest character. I am so grate-ful to her for her assistance.

Meryem Rose Ahmadian (Soprano) is excited to be back on the CCM stage! Meryem was a member of CCM for eight years and graduated from the program in 2005. Meryem is currently working in the CCM office as Program Coordinator. She graduated magna cum laude from Westminster Choir College in 2010 where she received a Bachelor of Music degree, voice primary, and an American Studies minor. Before graduating, Meryem gave a recital featuring works by Bach, Mozart, Ravel, Wolf, and Rodgers and Hammerstein. While at Westminster Choir College, Meryem actively participated in the many choirs including the Chapel Choir, Schola Cantorum, and Westminster Symphonic Choir and had the opportunity to perform in various prestigious venues with world-renowned conductors, soloists, and orchestras. She recently performed in Spotlighters’ production of Into the Woods as Cinderella and in Annapolis Opera’s production of La Bohème as part of the opera chorus. This summer she will begin Goucher College’s Master of Arts Administration degree. Meryem has studied with Russell Gartner, Melanie Sonnenberg, and Zehava Gal.

Pianist Patricia McKewen Amato’s extensive operatic experience includes duties as conductor, coach, and accompanist at the AIMS Institute in Graz, Austria, Brevard Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Peabody Institute, and the Young Victorian Theatre. She served as assistant music director of the Baltimore Opera Company and music director of its touring company; music director/conductor for Annapolis Opera, Maryland Lyric Opera, Brevard Music Festival, Opera Americana, Washington Savoyards, Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, and Rep Stage; and assistant conductor/chorus master for Washington Summer Opera. A versatile pianist, Ms. Amato frequently performs

with the Children’s Chorus of Maryland, Annapolis Opera, Annapolis Chorale, Baltimore Choral Arts, Baltimore Symphony, Maryland Symphony, Baltimore Opera, Prince George’s Opera and Philharmonic, and Metropolitan Opera regional competitions. Ms. McKewen Amato is a first place winner in the Houston Chamber Music Society Competition; she recently performed The Carnival of the Animals with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Carmina Burana with the Baltimore Choral Arts Society. She made her Lincoln Center conducting debut in 1999 in an all-Charles Loeffler program, subsequently recorded on Koch International. Ms. McKewen Amato is a coach/accompanist for the voice division at Towson University, the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, and the Children’s Chorus of Maryland. She holds a BM from the Catholic University of America (magna cum laude), a MM from the University of Houston (magna cum laude), and certificates in lieder, opera, and chamber music from The American Institute of Musical Studies, in Graz, Austria.

Drew Bostwick (Djembe) is a high school sophomore at Loyola Blakefield in Towson, MD. He is the drummer and lead vocalist for the band All Rights Reserved who has gained local notoriety and performs often in our area. He is also the co-host of the syndicated maritime conservation television show Aquakids which can be seen on Fox 45 on Saturday mornings at 11 AM. Drew enjoys water polo, swimming, and writing music when not performing.

As director of Upper School Music at Roland Park Country School, Lisa Anne Diver (Soprano) conducts the Roland Park Country School Semiquavers, Somettos, and Upper School Chorus ensembles in addition to teaching Music Theory courses. Prior to earning her Master of Music in Choral Conducting, with distinction, from Westminster Choir College of Rider University, and her Bachelor of Music in Music Education, cum laude, from the University of Delaware, Ms. Diver attended Roland Park Country School as a student, and sang with CCM for eight years, graduating in 2005. While attending Westminster Choir College, Ms. Diver held a graduate assistantship working with and conducting the Westminster Chapel Choir. Ms. Diver has performed in some


of the world’s most celebrated concert halls and under the batons of the most highly regarded conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. In 2011, Ms. Diver performed with the Westminster Symphonic Choir as part of the Andrea Bocelli and Friends performance in Central Park, a concert which included performers such as Tony Bennett, Celine Dion, and David Foster. Ms. Diver has studied with Joe Miller, Paul Head, Amanda Quist, and Andrew Megill.

Erica Feidelseit (Concert Parent Coordinator) is thrilled to be working with CCM for the first time. She is currently studying Theatre Design and Production and Integrated Early Childhood/Special Education at Towson University. Recent management credits include Lysistrata, Die Zauberflöte, and Twelfth Night (Towson University); Almost, Maine and Vanities (Upcounty Theatre); and Anna and August (Once at this Theatre). Thanks to CCM and to Timothy Huth for sharing this opportunity!

Dan Trahey (Tuba) is a musician, educator, and innovator. He was instrumental in the creation of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s “OrchKids,” where he currently serves as Artistic Director. Dan also founded the El Sistema inspired program “Tuned In” at the Peabody Conservatory where he teaches creative composition and community engagement. As a tuba player with The Archipelago Project, he travels the world promoting cross-genre performances and has performed for hundreds of thousands of children, specifically targeting impoverished areas with little access to live performance. He has held orchestral positions in Mexico, the United States, and Germany. Dan has been featured in countless publications including 60 Minutes, PBS, NPR, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. He recently gave a TED talk at TEDX Baltimore and was named the Most Valuable Player in the Arts by Baltimore Magazine.

Dan is a sought-after consultant for programs desiring to use music as a vehicle for social change. In addition to founding two El Sistema programs in Baltimore, Dan has helped start countless programs and has been directly involved with programs in Charlotte, Chicago, Fort Worth, Orange County, Allentown, Waterbury, Alexandria, and Kalamazoo.

Upcoming projects include working with the Ravinia Festival and spearheading a brass curriculum project in Bogota,




Columbia. His teaching experience includes the Baltimore School for the Arts, Idyllwild Arts, and New England Conservatory. He currently holds teaching residencies with the Innsbruck Musikschule, Tyrole, Austria; Nucleo, Acarigua, in Portuguesa, Venezuela, and in the Traverse City, Michigan Public School. He also teaches Music Entrepreneurship at the University of MD, Baltimore County. He received a Masters of Music from Yale University and a Bachelors of Music Education from Johns Hopkins University.

CCM is delighted to welcome the return of the multitalented Vaeth Family to our stage, after their triumphant appearance last semester with Mood Swings big Band. Graham, Grant, Melo and Jack bring a wealth of musical skills to the stage, playing saxophone, guitar, vibraphone, flute and keyboard and arranging, singing, and directing in various permutations as the music demands, while daughter Grace continues to represent her family well as a Concert Chorister.

SACRED FANFARE MUSICIANS

Osi Atikpoh (Tuba) has studied at the Peabody Preparatory in the Tuned In program for 5 years and will attend The Peabody Conservatory next fall

Keith Flemming (Tuba) is a 6th grader from Baltimore City. He has performed at halftime of the Baltimore Ravens Thanksgiving day game and recently played at Carnegie Hall with members of Venezuela’s Simon Bolivar Orchestra.

Lowrider James (Tuba) is a 3rd grader in Baltimore City and participates in the Tuned In and OrchKids programs. He has performed with Roger Waters, Matisyahu, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Recently he led a clinic in Philadelphia focusing on the importance of starting brass players at young ages.

Andre Palmer (Percussion) is an inaugural member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s OrchKids program. He plays cello and percussion and is a member of the OrchKids Jazz Band and the Peabody Preparatory’s Tuned In program. Andre is a musical mentor for OrchKids, where he helps guide Pre-K through 2nd grade musicians in their selection of instruments.




Joseph Wilkerson (Percussion) is an 8th grader from Baltimore City. He sings, plays percussion and cello. He attends the Peabody Preparatory, where he plays in the Percussion Ensemble. Joseph recently was featured on a concert sponsored by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra.
