A MESSAGE FROM JENNIFERWhen looking back on this season for the Children’s Chorus of Mary-land, I notice something. It is the sense of community that links every aspect of this organization.

The parents are helpful, flexible, and undeniably supportive. The fac-ulty and staff, whose skills and personality truly amaze me, work as a unit in which all parts are equal. And lastly, the students provide the musicianship, professionalism, and good humor that are so important in a first-rate children’s choir.

Betty Bertaux founded the Children’s Chorus of Maryland in 1976, and because of her vision, musical and educational expertise, and love of children, this children’s choir is a true community. I am hon-ored to be able to conduct such a phenomenal group of young people who have a great passion for music.

This season, the students in this community have been interviewed by the Baltimore Sun, sung in an opera, changed locations, performed with a big band, lent their voices in song at the Basilica, and much more. It is “with laughter and singing” that this community has done it all.

Next season, the Children’s Chorus will have a newly renovated home, and a multitude of appearances and opportunities that are sure to be both memorable and exciting. As always, the winter and spring concerts will be at this beautiful location, the Gordon Center. May all members of this community continue to move forward “with laughter and singing.”

—Jennifer Miller

A MESSAGE FROM BETTYI’m so proud of the CCM children and how effortlessly they made the transition from one director to another this year when I got sick. I’m equally proud of Jennifer Miller, who, with absolutely no notice, stepped up to the plate, and has done such an outstanding job in leading all three CCM choirs. I’ve known Jennifer since she was 6 years old when she first auditioned for CCM. It’s such a pleasure to know her as a consummate musician and teacher, and a person of the highest character. I am so grate-ful to her for her assistance.

—Betty Bertaux, Founder & Artistic Director Emeritus

Look around you today—You will see many people sporting various CCM pins. The oval, “Sponsor” pins are given to honor those people who have made an extraordinary financial contribution to CCM, of five hundred or more dollars to CCM in any one year. CCM could not exist without their generosity.

Some of our volunteers will be wearing pins earned for service far beyond that required of CCM families. Many of these volunteers have given dozens, even hundreds of extra hours to CCM. No con-cert, no fundraiser, no newsletter, no tour, no CCM event could be produced without the generosity of our volunteers.

Finally, you will see many pins proudly worn by our choristers. Every pin represents a period of extraordinary commitment, on the part of the student and the family, to braving the elements, overcoming illness, and laying other opportunities aside, in order to achieve exemplary attendance at CCM’s classes and rehearsals. Good attendance is the backbone of a polished performance, and while perfect and near-perfect attendance isn’t always possible, we honor those students who accomplish it. And look how many have accomplished it again and again!

Taken together, CCM’s pins tell the story of a tremendous commit-ment—of time, effort, funds, determination and talent—all of which come together to produce today’s concert. If you’re reading this program, chances are that some of that commitment has come from you. So thank you, to all who have made today’s concert possible. We couldn’t have done it without you!

texts & translationsthe pAth to the Moon Music by Eric H. Thiman

I long to sail the path to the moonOn a deep blue night, when the wind is cool:A glistening path, that runs out to sea, Silver the sail to carry me, To carry, carry, carry me over the seaSo I will sail, on a starry nightOn the path to the moon, a seabird’s flightSkimming the waves, where the fishes playTraveling on, for many a day;Silver the sails to carry me, To carry, carry, carry me over the sea

i wouLDn’t (from CAt AnD Mouse) Music by Carolyn Jennings

There’s a mouse house in the hall wall With a small door by the hall floorWhere the fat cat sits all day, sits that way all day every day Just to say, “Come out and play” to the nice mice in the mouse house In the hall wall with the small door by the hall floor,And do they come out and play when the fat cat asks them to? Well, would you? La la la la.

You’ll never guess what I saw yesterdayA magical beast from a land far awayA great, hairy thing with only one wing,A big, scary guy with flashing eyes,A twenty-clawed creep who drove ‘round in a jeepA guzzling fat hog that ate up a log, With a green wand that glowed,And turned blue when he crowed,With a big purple rose on the end of his nose,He juggles with gloves while hunting down doves,He followed me home, followed me home, followed…Can I keep him?

orpheus Words by William Shakespeare; Music by R. Vaughn Williams

Orpheus with his lute made trees, and the mountaintops that freezeBow themselves when he did singTo his music plants and flowers Ever sprung as sun and showers, There had made a lasting spring.Everything that heard him play, even the billows of the seaHung their heads and then lay byIn sweet music is such art: killing care and grief of heartFall asleep, or, hearing, die.

the seAL LuLLAby Words by Rudyard Kipling; Music by Eric Whitacre

Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us,And black are the waters that sparkled so greenThe moon o’er the combers, looks downward to find usAt rest in the hollows that rustle betweenWhere billow meets billow, then soft be thy pillow;Ah, weary wee flipperling, curl at thy easeThe storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake theeAsleep in the arms of the slow-swinging seas.

sing on! Words by Col. Henry Hevingham; Music by Betty Bertaux

If music be the food of love, sing on, sing on ‘til I am filled with joyFor then my listening soul you move with pleasures that can never cloyYour eyes, your mien, your tongue declare That you are music everywherePleasures invade both eye and ear, so fierce the transports are,So fierce they wound and all my senses feasted areIf music be the food of love, sing on, Sing on ‘til I am filled with joy and all my senses feasted are, Though yet the treat is only sound, my senses feasted areI’m filled with joy, sing on, sing on, sing on!Sure I must perish by your charms, unless you save me, save me in your arms. Sing on!

roger bobo Words by John Updike; Music by Brian Holmes

Note: Believe it or not, Roger Bobo is a true brass legend. He was born in 1938, and is an American tuba virtuoso and brass pedagogue. Roger Bobo gave the very first solo tuba recital at Carnegie Hall.

ADieMus Music by Karl Jenkins

Note: In this piece, there are no “lyrics” as such, but rather “syllables” invented by composer Karl Jenkins. All syllables end in vowels. In this way, the listener’s attention is focused on the pitch and timbre of the voice. The voice is therefore allowed to function as nothing more than an instrument.continued on page 21
