STORIES from the PAST
After the re-structuring of the Kawerau Schools took place in 2011-2012 and the closure
of Kawerau North, Central, Intermediate and the College; the Ministry of Education
approved surplus funding to go to the four existing schools in the form of money called
the Joint Schools Initiative Funding (JSIF).
The overarching purpose for all JSIF is-
“…to allow the co-operative development of projects for community-wide, multi-school initiatives for the improvement of educa-
tional achievement in Kawerau”
Principals of Kawerau Putauaki School, Kawerau South School, Te Whata Tau o Putauaki, and Tarawera High School developed
objectives for this fund and they have been the education focus in Kawerau since 2013.
To improve professional and governance practices in all Kawerau schools.
To improve student health and well-being in Kawerau
To improve all Kawerau student attendance and engagement in learning, including enhancing community-school partner-
ships and improving year level transitions.
To strengthen the sense of cultural identity of all students in Kawerau.
To further develop curricula so that programmes of learning meet the needs of all Kawerau students.
Over the last 18 months significant work has been done to produce a greater sense of cultural identity for our Kawerau children.
This has been supported through the efforts of Heemi Hill in assisting all schools with their tikanga programmes in preparation for
their respective festivals.
In addition to this Mr Stuart Cook (Kawerau South) and Mrs Ripeka Lessels (Te
Whata tau o Putauaki) have also spent time in getting the original book
‘Stories from the Past’ first printed in 1975, republished in bright, bold colours for
all Kawerau Schools and new residents to our town.
Friday 16th August saw Tuwharetoa ki Taupo Kaumatua, Te Kanawa Pitiroi visit
Kawerau and unveil the new book in front of representatives from each
school, the Kawerau District Council, Kawerau Cosmopolitan Club (original
sponsors in 1975), Mrs Myrene Reynolds, previously a Teacher Aide at Kawerau
North who did the original illustrations and many long serving teachers from
Kawarau’s past- Ngawaina Melbourne, Rangi Simpson, Berice Jullian, Osonia
Hoterini (ex- Kawerau North), Puti Coates (ex- RTM), and Kath Hiki (ex-Kawerau

participation in sports by
ensuring that their fees are paid in full.

need to make alternative arrangements

First X1 Soccer
The first X1 soccer team had a good season, with a lot of new play-
ers joining. Learning new skills and having fun, and have created a
good bond with each other. With a good ending to the season
they won their last game 4-0, which put them in 4th place overall. A
big thank you to the coach Gemma Mitchell, and our manage-
ment team Sandy Mitchell and Maria Puutu.
On Tuesday 23rd August the Year 7-8 netball team went to the an-
nual Jessie Savage Netball tournament in Te Teko. They were using
this as a pre-AIMS games warm up tournament, and it was a very
successful day out for them. The team were undefeated all day,
winning the Year 7-8 title. This wasn’t their only success. They also
won the prize for the best uniform and shared the goal aggregate
trophy with Allandale School.
Good Luck to all our year 7 and 8 students that are representing
Tarawera High School in the AIMS Games in Netball, Hiphop
and Indoor Bowls.

Celebrating Success
Join us to celebrate the success Tarawera High School has
enjoyed since moving into the new facilities.
Chinese speech competition
S e v e n t e e n s c h o o l s w e r e
represented at the mandarin
speech contest, held at Western
Heights High School on August 19.
Tarawera students Majean Rogers
and Nikia Davis placed first in their
respective categories. This is the first
year Tarawera students have
learnt Mandarin. Majean and
Nikia have learnt basic Mandarin
this year and were selected to
compete because of their talent.
After only having six months of the
mandarin language programme they competed against
students who had been working with full time teachers for
many years. At the end of the speech Nikia sang a beautiful
Mandarin song to show love and respect for her mother and
Majean added māori perfomances into his speech.
Trout
On 19th August a group of junior students went to the Fish and
Game Trout-Rearing Facility in Ngongataha. They were shown
around the facility and saw the trout eggs being harvested first
hand. The students were given a batch of eggs to take back
to school to raise themselves. The school has recently set up a
tank in one of the science labs and with the senior students
help have also set up a filter and chiller. The eggs have now
hatched and the trout fry can be seen swimming around the
tank. The students will raise the trout for the next few months
and will then release them into the Ruruanga Stream. This
stream has recently been part of a clean-up programme also
conducted by our students. The goal is to help restock the
Ruruanga stream annually with trout for future fishers.
Paid Union Meeting
Staff from all other Eastern Bay of Plenty schools will be
attending a stop work meeting on the afternoon of Tuesday
13th September. Please be advised that in the afternoon
Tarawera High School will have limited staff available to
supervise students who are unable to go home at 12.15pm.
Please contact the school office is your child requires
supervision. Buses will run at 12:15am.

Outdoor Education
26 students from the year 11 Outdoor
Education class have only just dried
out from what was a very soggy
three day tramping experience! As
part of their tramping, camping and
nutrition assessments students
headed into the Kaimai Range to
spend a night at Waitawheta hut
and Daly's Clearing. Students were expected to lead their
group for 30 minutes each day and
were asked to put their map reading
and navigation knowledge to the
test. Despite the unfavorable
weather all students showed
resilience and tenacity, and coped
well with the challenges of sleeping in
wet tents and cooking in small
spaces.
Music Trip Last week six senior students
headed to Wellington for three
days to look at the music
programme at Whitireia in
Porirua.We stayed with Ms
Hoskins parents (pictured with
students in front of van). Four of
the students auditioned for the
certificate in contemporary,
Rock and Jazz music and later
in the week we heard that all
four students have been
accepted! This course becomes
a four -year degree in
contemporary, rock and jazz
music. Well done guys!
Tarawera High School …...where MANA flows
Visit from Waikato University- Te Ahurutanga Maori Leadership
Program
On 24th August Tarawera High School hosted a group of
tertiary students from the Waikato University Te Ahurutanga
Maori Leadership programme. A group of senior students and
staff hosted the visitors in the whare tapere. The visit was a
wonderful window into the wider world for our students who
learned first hand about the journey facing them after they
leave Tarawera High School. Many a seed was planted that
may develop into a career ranging from engineering to
nursing! The visit began during lunchtime and our guests were
quick to mingle with students, with a few sporty types joining
the Year 7 and 8 handball
games! The modern learning
environment and integrated
curriculum made quite an
impression on the visitors as
did the manaakitanga shown
by our students as they
proudly showed off what
Tarawera High School has to
offer students in Kawerau.
School Defibrillator
On Thursday 22nd August 10 staff & senior students undertook
training to be able to use our Defibrillator. We learnt how to
do CPR correctly and if this did not work how
to operate our new school defibrillator. We
learnt some very important skills which
hopefully none of us will need to use.
Tarawera High School has recently
purchased a defibrillator which is held at the
school office for use in an emergency.
NZQA Fees
NZQA fees need to be
paid by the 14th of
