He then moved on to Vitória SC before aswitch to SL Benfica brought him another cup triumph in 1995/96. He then spent four seasons in Spain with RealOviedo CF.

He returned to Portuguese football and Sporting for the 2000/01 campaign, and a season later helped them win thePortuguese double. He retired from playing at the end of 2003/04, and quickly accepted a role in the Sporting coachingsetup where he guided the youth team to the national title in 2004/05. In October 2005 he was promoted to first-teamcoach after the sacking of José Peseiro, and quickly improved the side's fortunes, leading Sporting on a run of tenstraight victories between January and April 2006.

Overall, in his 27 league games in charge in 2005/06, he achieved 18 wins and six draws, although a 1-0 defeatagainst FC Porto in a decisive meeting meant a second-place finish. Sporting also lost to Porto on a penalty shoot-outin the Portuguese Cup semi-finals but the club had seen enough for the future. He was rewarded for his efforts inensuring a 2006/07 UEFA Champions League group-stage berth with a two-year contract in May 2006. The followingcampaign Sporting were again just pipped to the title by Porto but glory did come with a 1-0 win against CF OsBelenenses in the Portuguese Cup final. The 2007/08 season was Paulo Bento's first as a fully qualified coach forUEFA club competition purposes. Manchester United FC: Sir Alex FergusonDate of birth: 31 December 1941Nationality: ScottishCoaching career: Falkirk FC, East Stirlingshire FC, Saint Mirren FC, Aberdeen FC, Manchester United FC

Sir Alex Ferguson has enjoyed almost three decades at the top, restoring Manchester United FC to their position asone of Europe's foremost clubs. He helped nurture a group of young players including David Beckham, Paul Scholesand Gary Neville who formed the backbone of United's treble-winning side in 1999. The esteem in which his peershold him is reflected by his position as head of the UEFA Coaches Panel.

Ferguson enjoyed a relatively successful playing career that included a spell at Rangers FC before becomingplayer-coach at Falkirk FC. He then managed East Stirlingshire FC and Saint Mirren FC before shooting to prominenceat Aberdeen FC. In 1980 the club won the Scottish title to break the Old Firm's 14-year stranglehold, a dominancewhich has returned since Aberdeen's last title in 1985. Ferguson's greatest success with the Dons came in 1983,when they beat Real Madrid CF to win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

United appointed Ferguson in 1986 and after a difficult start the Scot led the club to their longest period of sustainedsuccess. Their first trophy was the 1990 FA Cup, followed next season by Cup Winners' Cup glory. In 1993 came thefirst of nine Premier League titles, to which five FA Cups were added. Ferguson's finest moment came in 1999, whentwo added-time goals gave United a 2-1 UEFA Champions League final victory against FC Bayern München. Afterfailing to get beyond the 2005/06 group stage and finishing runners-up behind Premiership champions Chelsea FC,Ferguson hit the heights again with the 2006/07 league title and a place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

It is aimed at supporting youth development activities in professional football, andcomplements other UEFA initiatives such as club licensing and the introduction of rules on locally-trained players.

Coaching licenceLondon will be the setting as UEFA celebrates the tenth anniversary of the introduction of the European CoachingLicence. The seventh UEFA Symposium for Coach Education Directors, which will take place on 24-26 Septemberat the Grange City Hotel, will focus on events that have taken place in the decade since six UEFA member associations- France, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain and Italy - were the first to sign the UEFA Convention on the MutualRecognition of Coaching Qualifications. High-profile guests and speakers including Gérard Houllier, Fabio Capelloand Sir Trevor Brooking, will contribute.

Coaches forumMany of the top coaches in Europe were at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, on 6-7 September for theninth UEFA Elite Club Coaches Forum. Illustrious names such as José Mourinho, Arsène Wenger, Ottmar Hitzfeldand Gérard Houllier joined senior UEFA officials at the forum, an essential component within UEFA's annual calendar. The coaches have an ideal opportunity at the gathering, away from the pressures of competition, to debate mattersof mutual interest and to stimulate thoughts on the development of the game. The forum/seminar focused on technicaltrends, tactical tracking systems to assist coaches, refereeing issues and top-level training methods. In previous yearsthe meetings have produced various recommendations which UEFA has taken on board for the overall benefit of theEuropean club game.

Safety summitUEFA, in co-operation with the Dutch National Football Information Point (CIV), brought together various parties inAmsterdam earlier this month to discuss safety and security aspects related to international football matches. Themeeting was attended by representatives of the European police and governmental bodies, security officers of UEFAand the national football associations, and security officials of the clubs taking part in this season's UEFA ChampionsLeague. "The event provided an opportunity to initiate the security planning for the UEFA Champions League groupstage matches, to exchange information about the participating clubs and to share experiences and highlight goodand bad practices," said UEFA.

Referee guidanceEurope's referees have been given clear instructions for action on penalty-area jostling and stopping play for playerinjuries. The instructions came during a two-day summer gathering of Europe's top referees and assistants at UEFA'sheadquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. "UEFA continues to work with Europe's top referees and assistants, in particularfocusing on certain aspects which are harming the image of the modern game," said the European body in a statement.

Their best European Cuprun came in reaching the 1982/83 quarter-finals but they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Real Sociedad de Fútbol despitewinning the first leg 1-0 at home.

UEFA Champions League milestones• All three of the club's previous campaigns - in 1997/98, 2000/01 and 2006/07 - have ended in the group stage.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Format: The UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on 31 August saw the 32 teams divided intoeight groups of four. Clubs from the same association could not be drawn into the same group. Each club plays onehome and one away match against each other club in its group. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for adraw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, thefollowing criteria are applied to determine the rankings.a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;c) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;d) superior goal difference from all group matches played;e) higher number of goals scored;f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question as well as its association, over the previousfive seasons. The eight group-winners and eight runners-up of the group stage qualify for the first knockout round, to be playedover two legs on 19/20 February and 4/5 March 2007. The clubs that finish this stage in third position in their groupmove into the Round of 32 of the UEFA Cup. The clubs that finish this stage in fourth position in their group areeliminated from UEFA club competition for the season. This year's UEFA Champions League final is in Moscow on21 May 2008.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2007/08, at least six places will be reservedfor players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from withinthe same association of the said club. The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2006/07, the number of locally-trained players required beganat four but the current six will rise to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21. UEFAis concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. Theproposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs fromsimply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greateropportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Champions League matches from the start of the firstknockout round, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remainingmatches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February at the latest. One player fromthe above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the currentseason may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFAChampions League this season.
