The Festival 12—23 September 2012

“Locating the Sacred” is a twelve-day,

twenty-event festival coordinated by the

Asian American Arts Alliance (a4) that brings

together artists and spaces in New York for

creative explorations of the “sacred.”

The festival showcases the diversity and talent

of the Asian American community, which now

constitutes more than 1 million people in New

York (13 percent of the population) and is the

most rapidly growing cultural group in the city.

The artists are connecting with host spaces—from

museums to concert halls to schools and church-

es—to create events together. The result of these

collaborations will be presented for all New York-

ers to experience. The festival aims to promote

artists as agents of change, demonstrating the

power of art and culture to unleash imagination,

break down barriers, and connect communities

together for the greater good.

The model of the festival is simple. a4 is co-pro-

ducing three pillar events: an opening, a closing,

and a panel discussion series. For the other festi-

val events, a4 acts as an umbrella, matching art-

ists with host spaces in an attempt to generate

creative collaborations across ethnic, religious,

geographic and aesthetic boundaries. These

events benefit from the festival’s “stamp”, from

underwriting for artist fees, and from the festi-

val’s citywide PR and marketing campaign. The

festival becomes the culmination of months-long

collaborations across the city, which we hope will

flourish and continue long after the festival ends.

Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 8pm-10pm The Church of the Ascension5th Avenue at 10th Street New York, NY 10011

TICKETS: $20 General Admission$10 Artists, Students and SeniorsFree for children under 5Special $40 VIP tickets include reserved seating and a post-event reception with the artists.

The Opening Concert of the festival features per-formances by two young and outstanding groups of Asian American musicians in an event dedicated to the festival’s mission: to promote artists as agents of change, demonstrating the power of art and culture to unleash imagination, break down barriers, and connect communities together for the greater good.

New York-based experimental composer, sound artist and vocalist Bora Yoon will present the world premiere of Sunken Cathedral, a site-specific program using instru-ments ranging from the viola and Tibetan singing bowls to electronics and found objects, to create a tapestry of ethereal sounds that explore the space where sound connects to the subliminal. Riyaaz Qawwali, a group of eight young Asian American male musicians from Austin, Texas, making their New York debut, will in turn offer a

program of traditional Qawwali, the enthralling, richly melodic, and rhythmic group-chanting style of Sufi music from South Asia. The artists will close the program with a collaborative piece.

As the artists express their spiritual devotion through music, the audience is invited to join on a mystical jour-ney of deep listening and gradual exaltation inside the magnificent Church of the Ascension, the oldest church on Fifth Avenue. The event showcases a sliver of the vi-brancy that exists in our Asian American artistic commu-nity, and in the spirit of the festival provides a platform for a most heartfelt collaboration. Join us on this special occasion as we open the festival and begin twelve days of community building across the city.

The EventNOTHING MATTERS WHEN WE’RE DANCING: A FLASH MOB

Sunday, September 23, 2012, 2pmBy the Fountain at Washington Square ParkThe southern tip of 5th Avenue New York, NY 10003

TICKETS: Free

“In tat or tatters you’re entrancing, Be we in Paris or in Lansing, Nothing matters when we’re dancing”

How sacred is your loved one to you? As we close the festival, we invite you to find a partner and participate in a Flash Mob at Washington Square Park based on the beautiful ballad, Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing by the band The Magnetic Fields. Led by Asian American dance groups including A.H. Dance Company, Michael Mao Dance, and Project Agent Orange who have collabo-rated to create a special choreography for all to learn, the Flash Mob celebrates the spirit of love.

Visit www.locatingthesacred.org for a link to the instruc-tional video. Learn the steps in your living room, garden or street and join us on September 23, 2012, for this

collective expression of joy and sharing at one of the city’s most iconic public spaces. After months of plan-ning, we invite you to complete the cycle and dance with us. The event lasts just three minutes, an apt metaphor for the ephemeral nature of love and life. Don’t be late!

People of all ages and dance ability are welcome to participate. Meet festival artists and other festival goers after the Flash Mob at our special Closing After-Party (details to be released at the Flash Mob).

A Flash what? A Flash Mob is a group of people who assemble in a public space to perform together for a brief time for the purposes of entertainment or artistic expression and who then disperse quickly.

WHAT WE DO. The Asian American Arts Alliance (a4) is dedicated to strengthening Asian American Artists

and art/cultural groups in New York City through funding, promotion and community building.

• Town Hall takes place every first Tuesday of the month. It’s an opportunity for Asian American art-

ists and organizations to 1) form their own strategic and creative alliances and 2) actively market and

promote their programs, events, and services to an interested, targeted, and strategically segmented

audience.

• a4Hub is a fully interactive platform that mirrors Town Hall online. Artists create their own profile

and add images, videos and music to share information about themselves and their work; get in

touch with other members via email and wall posts; contribute to forum discussions—all to be shared

with thousands of visitors monthly, including presenters, producers, funders, and the general public.

• Brainstorm! is a new series of lively workshops with discussions about empowering the artist as en-

trepreneur. Each Brainstorm! event features a case study presentation by an artist who then receives

feedback from three expert discussants. A Q&A with the audience opens up the dialogue.

OUR HISTORY. Founded in 1983, a4 was developed as a diverse alliance of artists, organizations, and

individual supporters who believed that working together as a pan-ethnic, multidisciplinary community was

essential to nurturing the development of artists and arts organizations, and to providing a political voice

for this community.

OUR PARTNERS. a4 has garnered the support of major funders, including the National Endowment for

the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, ConEd, the
