Ljubinka Stoilova (22.12.1954), Ph. D., MSc. rchitect is a chief expert at the Old Sofi a Municipal Enterprise with Historical Museum of Sofi a, Sofi a. Researcher, author of articles and co-author in three monographs in the fi eld of theory and history of 19th and 20th c. architecture. Grantee of the Central European University and Open Society Institute in Prague (1992-95, 1997-2000). Co-compiler of over 10 documentary exhibitions in Bulgaria, Austria (1998, 2007), The Czech Republic (2000). Her current scientifi c interests spread in the fi elds of Balkan research networking, Gender Studies and Cultural Heritage Protection.

MODERNISM YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROWLjubinka Stoilova

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the international NGO for documentation and conservation of buildings, sites and neigh-

bourhoods of the Modern Movement DOCOMOMO International, this paper traces back the stages in the 20th c. Modern architecture and town planning development starting from its pioneers period and

reaching the postmodern reevaluation stage. Parallels situate Bulgar-ian architecture within the Modern Movement during the inter-war

period and after WW II. Presently DOCOMOMO International gathers professionals from 49

sections all over the world (Bulgarian one since 1993-94). Its archives of over 800 fi ches selected by an international expert council on

registers embrace Bulgarias contributions of 11 examples (1995-96) published in the fi rst collection of DOCOMOMO International (2000),

4 sports facilities (2004), and 7 urban case studies included in the international edition Other Modernisms (2006).

The author appeals for urgent re-estimation and documenting of Bulgarian Modern Movement heritage according to internationally approved criteria and principles towards creating of a systematized

and approachable for public digital data base. Such nationally signifi cant mission needs involvement of the entire local expertise,

especially of young people, for the sake of further cooperation with relevant international networks.

Helen Fessas Emmanouil, Ph.D., M. Arch. is a professor at the University of Athens,

Greece. She has written six books on the history and creators of Greek

19th-20th c. architecture. This paper is primarily directed

to a central theme of Aris Konstantinidis architectonic philosophy

and practice: namely, his determination and ability to reconcile imported Modernity and indigenious Tradition in the late thirties, fi f-

ties and sixties. In doing so he ran counter to the then prevailing idea

that Industrial and International Modernism was both superior and opposed

to pre-industrial traditions. Konstantinidis accomplishment is of paramount impor-

tance not only within the context of Neohel-lenic or Mediterranean Modernisation, but

also within the broader context of Modernity in regions with invaluable

architectural tradition (e.g. the Balkans, but also India, China, etc.).

NIKOLAY DIULGHEROV: THE MULTIFORM ARTISTIC IDENTITY Irina Genova

Irina Genova, Ph.D. is an associate professor at the New Bulgarian University, Sofi a, with several monographs on Bulgarian and Balkan

Modern art and with numerous publications on contemporary visual arts in Bulgaria and abroad.

The exhibition (with Genova as curator) about the noted Bulgarian artist, architect and designer Nikolay Diulgherov is related to the 100th anniversary of the fi rst Manifesto of Futurism,

published in Paris by Ph. T. Marinetti. The general concept and the designers idea about the exhibition was to

show N. Diulgherov as a representative of European avant-guarde. A long-term citizen of Torino, Italy, in

the last period of his life he wished to show his works in Bulgaria. At that time the fulfi llment of that wish appeared to be impossible. Thus

for Bulgarias history of Modern art Diulgherov remained a familiar name but with unknown creativity.

(Nov. 2009March 2010), Diulgherovs works under the above title are exhibited - quite appropriately - in the departure

room of Terminal 2 at the Sofi a Airport.

THE UNFORGETABLE PROFESSOR ARCHITECT VASSIL VALCHANOV:TO HIS 87TH ANNIVERSARY

Maria MirkovaMaria Mirkova, M. Arch., is an associate professor at the University of Architecture,

Civil Engineering and Geodesy in Sofi a. A student and later a collaborative of Prof. Arch. Vassil Valchanov (1923-2005), she remembers him as

a friendly, kind, witty and well balanced person dedicated to his profession and respected by his colleagues.

During his early career he has worked on urban designs for the cities of Dimitrovgrad, Pleven, Burgas,

and took part in the competition for the Sofi as centre (with Prof. arch. Ivan Vassilyov), and in the further overall design process that followed (1964,

1965 1966). He is well known as leader of the design team for the Lenin (nowadays Yavorov) Housing Estate with the Feya (Fairy) Caf and Ropotamo Res-

taurant (1957-59); these were among the fi rst Modern Movement manifestations after the

Post WW II ideological stagnation in Bulgaria was over. Head of the Chair of Residential Build-ings at the Sofi a Architectural Faculty and of

the same department at the Union of Bulgarian architects, Prof. Valchanov has contributed with numerous theoretical investigations and was decorated

with prestigious state awards.

YAVOROV HOUSING ESTATE A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE IN Yavorov Housing Estate was among the fi rst Post WW II Modern designs in Sofi a. Beside the diversity of blocks of fl ats satisfying diff erent family needs, the environment is notable for the surrounding forest of diverse rare trees and bushes that, after half a century of free growth, provide pleasing microclimate and eff ective protection in contrast with the contempo-rary noisy, dusty and polluted capital city. In 2005-08 the inhabitants of the neigbourhood made the fi rst attempt in Bulgaria to register a Post WW II Modern architectural work as a monument of culture. This action was directed against business intentions for reconstruc-tion of the Feya Cafe and destruction of Ropotamo restaurant; it did not succeed. Nowadays they do not want to speak about the oasis in the big city that they live in; they simply withdraw into it.

For several years now the Old Sofi a Municipal Enterprise and Historical Museum has cooperated with the Department of History and Theory of Architecture at the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy (UACEG) in Sofi a

by provision of information from its archives for the preparation of students classes designs. In 2009 the interest of 4th year students towards their prelimi-

nary diploma designs in the fi eld of Restoration of architectural heritage sites was drawn upon Modern Movement examples from the interwar period since

the archival information about them was rather poor. The Library Building of Sofi a University was constructed (1930-34) after the

competition-winning design of two of the patriarchs of Bulgarian 20th century architecture: Ivan Vasilyov (1893-1979) a graduate from the Karlsruhe Higher

Technical School, and Dimitar Tsolov (1896-1970) a graduate from the Munich Polytechnic. The architectural and cultural value of the site is extremely high: the

designers are among the most noted Bulgarian architects of the 20th century; the building is unique for this country in its location, functional and spatial

structure, decorative arrangement and interior design. Together with the other University buildings, the library building has been registered as a cultural

monument of national value (State Gazette No. 40 of 1978). The students team merit was the investigation of the original competition project at the State

Archives.The Armenian Peoples House on 31 Lomska/Naycho Tsanov Str. (at present

Todor Alexandrov B/d), was designed in 1933 by the Munich Higher Technical School graduate (1922) Assen Chernev (?-?). It has been acknowledged as an ar-chitectural and artistic cultural heritage site of local value, declared with a letter of 12.05.1987 by the Expert Council to the then National Institute of Monuments

of Culture. The students took measurements and drew precise plans of the building.

Students designs are kept at the archives of History and Theory of Architecture Department, UACEG-Sofi a. Meanwhile the designs digital versions supplement and enrich the archives of the Immovable Cultural Heritage Department within

the Old Sofi a Municipal Enterprise and Historical Museum. We draw special attention to these profound works by students and professors

because of the high potential in the fi eld of design and digital technologies that might contribute to the systematic data base actualization of state and

municipal institutions devoted to the cultural heritage in the frame of budget or EU programs. This is valid to the greatest extent for the Modern Movement layer in Bulgarian architecture, as far as it has still been unsatisfactory covered by the
