Games Night on Saturday August 3
Wollumbin High Quality Portfolio Presentations
Rotary Foundation District News
Important Events Fundraising for our Banana Festival
Queen Tammy continues at a good
pace.
On Friday July 19 was a second
Tenpin Bowling event, just as
successful as the first. We had teams
on all 16 lanes again.
We have some important events
coming up, it is a really busy time of
year.
Firstly a Cake Stall on Saturday July
27 at the Mitre 10 Sausage Sizzle.
All members are asked to donate
cakes or similar to the cake stall.
In addition to the Cake Stall we will
draw the winner of the Farm Bike
raffle during the morning.
Then on Saturday August 3 we will
hold a Games Night. This is always
a popular event. We will be at Jack
Heffernan‟s house on the great deck
Jack built specially for the Games
Night. Try your luck at Roulette,
Blackjack, Crown & Anchor, and
other games using chips and at the
end of the night use the chips to bid
in an auction for assorted items,
something to suit everyone.
This night is one not to miss.
On Sunday August 11 we are invited
to Len and Judy Mason‟s place at 9
Merino Place, Terranora for High
Tea from 2.00pm. It is necessary to
book as this is limited to a maximum
of forty people. This is certain to be
a popular social occasion so book
early by phoning Judy on
0755904152 or email
August 23 is the Banana Festival
Fashion Parade. Helpers needed for
this in all areas, so please volunteer.

District Office Bearers FROM WHERE I SIT by David This was a great evening spent with the other Clubs in the Cluster last Wednesday. And
Denis Hallworth, Michael Grisedale, Jack Heffernan and Cathie, Bryan Threlfall and
Barbara, Anni Brownjohn and Glenn Nott, Noel Graham and MaryAnne, and I
thoroughly enjoyed it. That the evening was dedicated to raising funds for a school in
Nepal made it so much more worthwhile. Congratulations to RC Coolangatta Tweed
Heads and President Glenn Rees for organising this example of interClub co-operation.
Also on Wednesday evening, Diedri Shepherd, Youth Service Director, attended the
Rotaract Club‟s meeting on our behalf, and with the purpose of talking up RYLA. She
already has a clutch of aspirants for RYLA - great stuff, Deidri. She has, advised and
assisted by Denis, offered one NYSF candidate an alternative, the Honeywell Engineering
Summer School because the talents of that student lay in engineering. That‟s what we‟re
about - thank you Diedri and Denis for getting this year off to such a good start, truly this
small Club is Leading the Way, to ENGAGE ROTARY AND CHANGE LIVES.
Our President-Elect Judy, and Membership Director Len, are racing up and down the M1
to Brisbane where they have an son quite seriously ill. We wish you all well, Judy and
Len, and your son.
So what‟s next? There‟s a lot in the offing, and we need everybody on deck. Anni has the
Swap Till You Drop at end of September. We have, collectively, the Festival of
Performing Arts on August 6, and the Tweed Valley Banana Festival throughout August.
Coming closer is a BBQ for potential members, also in September. On an ongoing basis,
there are several fun events to support our Banana Queen candidate Tammy, starting with
the second Cake Stall this weekend and the Games Night on Saturday August 3.
That motor cycle - to our astonishment, Michael has banked almost $1,000 which he,
Denis and I braved the elements and cold outside the Banana Festival Office to sell, and
there‟s about $300 in the box still and counting. THIS IS BEING DRAWN ON
SATURDAY 27TH JULY -that‟s THIS weekend. Thank you to Peter Sochacki who
donated this motor cycle.
This week we have a very interesting talk on the programme - one of the occasional
“What‟s New In My Business” series. I hope everybody gets with it.
In between times, we get a bit of sleep. But in all these projects, and others as we go, this
small Club is Leading the Way, to ENGAGE ROTARY AND CHANGE LIVES. Let‟s
keep it going.
You will all be saddened to hear that Past President and Honorary Member of the
Southport Rotary Club Cyril Richarde, passed away on Saturday night (July 20) aged
100.
Cyril was a "Rotarian Extraordinaire" and a great humanitarian. As President of the
Rotary Club of Southport in 1962, he and PDG Keith Hopper (Rotary Club of Inverell)
established volunteer teams to build schools and hospitals in Indonesia. To obtain
subsidised transport from QANTAS they labelled the project "Fourth Avenue in
Motion" or FAIM. And so FAIM was born, and was recognised as a national project
not only by Rotary but also the Australian Government in 1971. The project Educating
Indonesian Children continues to this day as a RAWCS project sponsored by the
Rotary Club of Southport and coordinated by Bill Bonner (Rotary Club of Stanthorpe).
Cyril celebrated his 100th birthday on Saturday April 20 and what a delight it was for a
number of Rotarians to share in his celebration.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held for Cyril on MONDAY JULY 29 but at this
stage I have no further details. I will provide these details as soon as they are
available."
We give thanks for the life of a very special Rotarian
PDG Graham Jones
Secretary, Rotary Club of Southport
Thought of the day

NOTES
of the things

1 Is it the TRUTH ?
2 Is it FAIR to all
concerned ?
3 Will it build GOODWILL
and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS ?
4 Will it be BENEFICIAL to
all concerned ?
Once again District 9640 has achieved the US$100 per capita goal for contributions to the Annual Programs Fund. While not quite equating the figure of the previous two years, our contribution for 2012 - 2013 was US$132,420 or US$100.47 per capita. This is only the third time our District has reached the US$100 per capita target and your efforts in achieving this milestone are much appreciated by the District Leadership Team and particularly PDG Sandra. On this occasion it is disappointing to report that three clubs did not record a contribution to the Annual Programs Fund (really should have been only two clubs as a significant contribution by one club was received too late to make the cut-off but it does mean we have a flying start to 2013-2014). This is the best
club participation rate in any recent year for which records are readily available, and is due, in part, to the outstanding support by Presidents to DG Tony’s request for them to join the First Class by making a personal contribution to The Rotary Foundation. In actual dollar terms, our top ten contributing clubs were:
PolioPlus – Thirty six clubs contributed US$47,020 to PolioPlus which together with a US$8,000 contribution from District Designated Funds means a total District contribution of US$55,020. Our top contributing clubs were:
Congratulations to each of the above clubs and to all others who made contributions to PolioPlus. Other contributions relating to matching grants totalled US$17,773 bringing our total contributions to The Rotary Foundation in 2012-2013 to a very commendable US$205,213. We take this opportunity to extend a very big thank you to all clubs and individual Rotarians who have
contributed so significantly to ―Our Charity‖ enabling The Rotary Foundation to continue to do good in the
world.

The Club Song
We‟ve come to introduce you to the Murwillumbah Central boys,
The way you know that we‟re around is when you hear the noise,
There‟s tenors, basses, inbetweens, and some just here for show,
But all the same we‟ll sing to you, so boys just „Let „er go‟.
When Governor Georgie, gave us our charter,
He kissed our Rotaryannes to make it right,
We‟ve come to greet you, because we‟re after,
All the fun and fellowship that‟s going tonight.
So put it there!
