It seems inevitable around this time ofyear: making New Year's Resolutions thatwe are sure to break only a few short weekslater. If you look up a list of the most

popular resolutions, you'll find that most are invariablyfocused on ourselves (I'm going to eat less; I'm going toexercise more; I'm finally going to get my budget under

control). While these are all fine and worthy goals, I'vebecome convinced that the reason they tend to fail is thatwhat we really need is to make choices that have an impacton the community and people around us.

Starting at The Bridge next week, we are offering a uniquesmall group opportunity known as "Q Groups." Short for"Question Groups," Q Groups will be short-term, six-weeksmall groups that meet at a time and place of the group'schoosing. A new Q Group will begin every two weeksbeginning January 12, and they are open to anyone in theWoodmont, Bridge, or Nashville community. Some groupsmight meet right before or after The Bridge, some might meetfor lunch during the week, or some might meet on a weekday

or weekend night. The overall goal of Q Groups is to connwith other people from our community and strengthen tweb of relationships that makes our church who we are. doing so, we will develop a deeper relationship with God awith each other.

These groups are based on the model that Jes

demonstrated when he recruited his twelve disciples. Evour Lord and Savior surrounded himself with a group people to support and challenge his amazing ministry! Wtoo, do better when we surround ourselves with people wcan celebrate with us during the good times and mourn wus during the bad times. The Bible says, "as iron sharpeiron, so one person sharpens the wits of another" (Prover27:17). In the same way, people in Q Groups will help eaother become the people that God wants us to be.

Come join us as we start "small" in 2014! By doing you can choose to make a New Year's Resolution to get mo

involved in our community and support each other on troads on life and that's a resolution that will last a lifetimOver the coming months, a new Q Group will be startievery two weeks.

If you'd like to participate in or lead one of these smgroups, you can get more information or sign up by emailiStephen Daniel King at [email protected].

Lots of images run through our mindswhen we consider the life of Jesus. I suspectmany of us would immediately think of Hislife as a preacher and healer, His birth, miracles, death and resurrection. Perhaps we

neglect to recognize one of Jesus' most profound roles:preparing the disciples and other followers to "go into all the

world and preach the gospel to all creation." Christianitymay bear His name but the remarkable growth of the faithwas initially set aflame by a small group of committedbelievers trained at the foot of The Master.

We know from history that the growth of Christ's Churchdid not happen quickly nor did it happen without great perilto those that were leading the charge. It rolled out in littlevictories confronted daily by tremendous resistance, tortureand death. For me, nothing short of being witness to The

Resurrection would have inspired those brave and faithful persevere through the harsh environment that awaited themBut let us not forget that they were also prepared.

We have opportunities to gather at Woodmont ChristiaChurch many times each week. We gather to worship anpray, sing and learn, teach and share, engage our mind

offer our support and bring our gifts. One of the thingslove so much about our congregation is the generous mannin which we give back to one another, our local communiand across the globe. What happens at Woodmont doesstay at Woodmont it goes out into God's world. In oown way we are carrying on a tradition that began in Galil2000 years ago: we are being prepared and we are carryinour preparation and our witness "into all the world."

"THE POWER OF YOUR INTENT"SPIRITUAL JOURNEYS FOR WOMEN

9:30 a.m. in The Bay - Led by the Reverend Anne Stauffer

"But more than anything else, put God's work first and do what He wants. Then the other things will be yours as well." Matthew 6:33

Begin a season of Declaring Your Intent(whatever that may be in your life) and amass the skills and power to Put It IntoAction. As Christ Jesus demonstrated the ultimate in focus, courage, and single-mindedness, we can learn from his life and

teachings how to conquer and Become a CoCreator with Him.

(What Happens at Woodmont Doesn't Stay at Woodmont continued)

As a new year unfolds let me encourage each of us tocommit or recommit - to one of the many ministries andmissions that Woodmont supports. There are so many wayswe can serve and so many in need of our service. We havebeen prepared and now it is time to go

Whoever wants to become great among you must be your

servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of

all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served,

but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

    (Mark 10:43-45)

    Blessings,Thom

    Thank you Woodmont!

Late last week, as news spread of arctic air to sweep through our city, we were facedwith the task of finding warm beds and food for some of Nashvilles homeless. A pleawas made last Friday afternoon to the WCC congregation and soon we were staffedfor five extra days of Room in the Inn! Offers for meals, overnight hosts, drivers andlaundry were packaged together in order to keep some of these folks from spending atreacherous night on the streets of Nashville. Thank you Woodmont for your caringand generous spirit!

We still seek RITI help on the dates listed below. This year, we have arranged forhusband/wife teams to serve as hosts and have their own lockable room at SH. If youare interested in serving, please go to the RITI page on the Woodmont website andsign up for a date that fits your schedule. Again, thank you!

The Discipleship Classes are broken into the three focal areas of Woodmont's MissionStatement. Each area will be discussed over the next three weeks. The Seeking class is the firstarea that will focus on our core beliefs as Christians. We will discuss what the church is and isnot. We will talk about why we need the church. We will also talk about the Christian Church(Disciples of Christ), how it emerged, where it started, and what it is. Why is the unity of thechurch important? We will identify some biblical images of the church. We will discuss thetheology of the Lord's Supper and Baptism. We will talk about Woodmont's many ministries andprograms and how you can get involved. What is expected of church members in terms of time, talent, and treasures? We will discuss the ways that God is present in our lives each and every

day and how faith and spirituality is an ongoing journey.

    - "Serving" Class

6:30 p.m. - Introduction to the Bible Class (105) -Led by Roy Stauffer

The class will look at where and how we got the Bible, when it was written, who wrote it, both OldTestament and New Testament. Then we will take a brief look at every book in the Bible to see howit fits in with the whole Bible. This kind of information is needed before we can read and study theBible correctly.

    Give Us a Call!

Please be sure to call us whenever you need meeting space whether you have a group of 2 or 20. Our housekeeping staff

relies on the master calendar to know who is in the building at all times. In addition, they need to be aware of rooms (andadjacent restrooms) being used so that space can be touched-up after use. Recently, alarms have been activated by folksleaving the building after the housekeeping staff has already locked/secured the building. When the alarm is activated aftehours, a church member must respond and is often required to drive over to the church to address the issue. This is a hugebuilding and it is difficult to monitor all the comings/goings. Putting your meeting/event on the calendar will ensure thatwe know you are in the building. Thanks for your help!
