We are off and running in 2015. Every Januaryat Woodmont, we identify three AREAS OFFOCUS for the New Year. I want to say a wordabout each of these.1. BEING MISSIONAL This past fall we startedto emphasize what it means to be a missionalchurch. Our Elders have been reading ReggieMcNeals book Missional Renaissance. Being

Missional involves much more than just havingmission and outreach ministries (which wecertainly do). It is a fundamental way of viewing the church and its rolein the world. The church is not just a place or a building. Its not justsomewhere we go to gather. The church is a body of believers united byChrist sent to change and transform the world with Christs love. The churchis called to be externally focused and not just internally focused. The churchis called to develop disciples and not just programs. We are called to bethe church not just on Sundays but everywhere where we live, work, andinteract with others. Being missional is a way of living and being. It is amindset. Jesus said, As the father has sent me, so I send you. (John 20:21)Our first Missional Wednesday dinner is this week, Jan 7th, focusing onour amazing ministry in Guatemala which involves sponsorships, building

houses, and another trip planned for October 10-17th 2015. Let us keepwrestling with and talking about new ways for us to be a missional church.2. LIFE GROUPS We have some amazing small groups at Woodmont thatspan all ages and all walks of life. We want to build on this by starting anumber of LIFE GROUPS. Life groups will consist of 6-12 people who gettogether either weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly to experience life together.

Life groups should try to incorporate these things: Prayer, Spiritual Growth,Fellowship, and Mission. Not every group will have all four but this is thegoal. We are now looking for courageous leaders who are willing to recruiand facilitate these groups. Please let Mary Clare Pyron or me know if you arewilling to head up one of these. The commitment is roughly six months. Smalgroup ministry at any church is completely dependent on having committed, proactive leaders, and that is what we are now looking for in 2015.3. WORSHIP Worship is essential to what we do as a community. At

Woodmont, we offer three distinct worship styles: Relaxed worship at 9:30Traditional Worship at 11:00, and Contemporary Worship at 5:15. Emersononce said human beings are hard wired to worship and if we dont worshipGod we will find something else to worship money, social status, power, possessions, ourselves, you name it. This year, we are going to take a hardlook at our worship services, what we are currently offering, and what wehope to offer in the future. Our 9:30 service is often over-crowded and wemust address this and the logistics of it. We want everybody at Woodmonto find a worship style that is meaningful and commit to it on a regulabasis. Our leadership is continuing to wrestle with our worship scheduleand how we can maximize it in the future. There will be more said about these three focus areas but I wanted tocommunicate them and ask for your prayers and support in helping us grow

in each of them. Please let us know if you want to recruit and lead a lifegroup. It will greatly enhance your faith and spiritual life. Blessings,

Woodmont in 2015 by Clay Stauffer

Woodmont Christian Preschool has been a vital part of our church fordecades. Over the years it has brought numerous families into the life ofour congregation and continues to do that today. As a preschool parent, Ican tell you that these children are being shaped and molded for life everyday at our church. We have a phenomenal new Director Martha Duff, who has a great vision for the future of the school. The reality is we haveneglected our facility for many years while other schools in town haveremodeled and updated theirs. This makes it hard to stay competitive. Partof the Strategic Planning process last year was a clear realization that wehad to do something about this and quickly, so we did! We have now raisedclose to $650,000 for this project. Construction started in December and willrun through the spring. I want to thank the following people for makingsignificant lead contributions to this important effort: Milton and Denise

Johnson, Clayton and Michelle McWhorter, John and Sandra CarpenterDavid and Karen Conrad, Brian and Christy Waller, and Tate and Nora RichThe Preschool has also raised significant funds over the past few yearsthrough fundraising events like Carnival and Auction. John and Joan Richosted the last two auctions at their house on Love Circle, both of whichwere very successful. If you would like to donate a brick paver in honor omemory of a loved one to be included in the new entrance, its still not toolate. They are $100 and will help this project. Please contact Sheila Mathia([email protected]) in the Preschool office. We are very excitedabout this significant facility upgrade which will help keep our preschooone of the best in Nashville. Here is a rendering of what the outside wilook like when complete.

I am writing this at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday,December 31, 2014. You are probably reading thisalmost a week later and that has some bearing onthe proposal I am making. About 30 minutes agoI read Malachi chapters 1 - 4 and Revelation 22,thus completing a resolution I made a year ago:reading The Bible through in 2014. This time I wassuccessful; many other attempts in the past have

ended prematurely. Well, Im determined to do this again in

2015 and Im floating this invitation to all of you to join me. No pressure,of courseI wont be calling you with questions or quizzes about kings orcovenants or prophecies.

Should you choose to proceed Id suggest you follow a pre-designedReading Plan. The website www.BibleGateway.comis an excellent resource- but only one of many. Although BG lists about a dozen plans I humblysuggest choosing the Old/New Testament design which offers a bit of bothon a daily basis. (Note: I tried the Chronological Plan a few years ago andJesus didnt enter the picture until October. That was tedious).

Here is a link to the BibleGateway Reading Plans website: wwwbiblegateway.com/reading-plans.For those that accept this invitation, hereare a few personal tips from a fellow traveler whose lips move when he reads Although Bible Gateway can/will send you an email with the daily text

Id suggest using an actual Bible. Have a highlighter handy to identify passages that lift your spirits. Have a highlighter handy to identify passages that dont make sense. If/when you miss a day or two (or more) dont get bogged down in

trying to catch up - just jump back in on the reading for the day.

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and

spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughtsand intentions of the heart.

    Hebrews 4:12Happy New Year!xo - Thom

A Modest Proposal by Thom Schuyler

For five years before I came to Woodmont, Ihad the joy of being the Childrens Music Directorat Vine Street Christian Church. The childrenschoir met on Wednesday nights, usually about 25of us, all different. The smallest were four yearsold. Miss Julia, the church organist, who hasseen it all before, and can usually tell you how itwill pan out, is more than 15 times that. We werebound together by a love for music, but more thanthat, we were bound by a love for each other.

At the end of each childrens choir rehearsal that first school year we weretogether, I gathered us in a circle and asked for us to pray for the person next

to us by their name. In our first few rehearsals, the prayers were awkward:I pray for JP, that he doesnt beat up his sister because shes nicer than he isanyway, followed by some giggles and an indignant growl.

It didnt take long. Three weeks into the school year, something changed. The pace of our

circle prayers slowed. Maybe it was because of Diana, one of the blonde,curly-mopped twins who are the youngest among us. She sat next to Clare,

clenching her hand, her blue eyes wide. Dear God, I want to pray for Clare. Ipray that she never gets lost in the woods or skins her knee. The end.

Maybe this is what Paul was talking about when he wrote the letter to theThessalonians. May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for eachother, and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.

In that circle, love was overflowing. Diana was offering up her most earnestprayer that Clare be safe and happy. Each week, the love increased among thechildren and the adults who were blessed to be with them. Our hearts werestrengthened and encouraged to be brave and bold, to share the love weddiscovered in our midst.

    These are topsy-turvy times in our world. My prayer is that we will beencouraged as we leave the Advent season and journey toward Epiphany;

that we can watch for hope with the return of Christ; that we actively worktogether for peace; that we be strengthened by love to be loving to thosearound us.Lost ways and skinned knees happen, but so do miracles.

I dont know about you, but most miracles Ive seen are the direct result oa love overflow. Christmas, for example.
