Carrabassett Valley Academy, best known for the athletic and academic accomplishments of its students

and alumni, is increasingly recognized for being a cohesive community and a major component of the

greater Carrabassett Valley/Sugarloaf area. A strong sense of community is vital for the sustainability

of any school, especially in regards to keeping CVA alumni involved and willing to support their alma

mater.

This past summer CVA hosted its first “Get Back, Give Back” weekend for alumni. It was heartening

to see so many of the alumni return to reconnect with friends and staff and to be willing to pitch in and

help out with some of the summer maintenance chores. It was well attended, as well as a lot of fun.

The CVA Golf Classic Tournament/Auction soon followed and it too, was strongly supported by alumni.

As CVA nears its 30th Anniversary, some of the earlier CVA alumni are reaching a point in their family

lives and careers where they can begin to re-establish their ties with the school, as evidenced by the

fact that CVA now has 4 alumni serving on the Carrabassett Valley Academy Board of Trustees. In

addition, 8 CVA alumni are current members of the CVA staff, working either as teachers, coaches or

administrators. This strong alumni association is a safeguard to maintaining the integrity of the mission of the school.

The alumni lived the “CVA Way” and they fully understand the intrinsic value of the CVA experience. It

is important to them that the values that they shared remain at the core of the CVA community.

To sustain our values of a respectful and supportive living and learning environment requires continuous

intentionality and commitment by all students, faculty, and staff. During this year’s Faculty and Student

Orientations, we had the good fortune of Dr. Jeffery Beedy working with us to build and strengthen the

CVA community.Dr Beedy stressed that words like respect, tolerance, patience and understanding, although well

meaning, would not alone create the desired outcome. Rather he translated those words into behaviors

to clearly define what roles community members play. He explained that people behave as: detracting,

following, observing, participating or leading, depending on the situation. This year it is the goal of the

school to help each person move toward the leadership category. Dr. Beedy also explained in order for

this to happen each member of the community requires four basic things: to be known, needed, cared

for, and to have the opportunity to shape the community. I have a quote taped to my computer monitor that reads “People support what they create.” This year

the CVA community is dedicated to creating a positive and energized environment. Please join us!

Community ValuesLeadership, Responsibility, Commitment

1

In an effort to increase our awareness of what it means to be an effective community member, CVA has been working with Dr. Jeff Beedy on building a set of community values. Dr. Beedy, a former CVA board member, is nationally recognized for his work as a headmaster and author regarding character development. He created a system for schools to collectively identify the values that divide a community as well as those that unite a community while ensuring that all members use the same vocabulary to reference and describe behaviors to work toward the same goals.

He worked with the faculty during orientation sessions before school began. Then each grade level worked on creating their list of values while they were on their orientation trips. These values were synthesized by Dr. Beedy at a community-wide meeting where each class presented their values and explained their thoughts on the process.

Students and faculty voted on which items they feel most divide us. This is the list of behaviors that we will work to eliminate. We also voted on those items that unite us. This is the list of behaviors we will work to reinforce.

Dr. Beedy wrapped up the process by sharing a set of Leadership Levels that allows each community member to have a rubric to measure their effort and attitude towards their involvement in the community:

We use the language in the Leadership levels in all areas of daily life at CVA…..from dish crews to work in class to life in the dorm.

2

On Saturday, June 5th, thirty four members of the Class of 2010 gathered with faculty, staff, family and friends for their commencement in the Richard Bell Chapel. 2 0 1 0 CVA Sugarloaf Golf ClassicFor twenty-six years the Golf Classic and the Martha B. Webber Scholarship Fund have been supporting deserving Maine students in their pursuits of academic and athletic excellence at Carrabassett Valley Academy.

This year’s Golf Classic was both unique and inspiring. The CVA Sugarloaf Golf Classic is a weekend of deep tradition, loyal friends and enthusiast returning participants who continually show their support for the CVA community. This year, in addition to this group of loyal friends, we had an impressive showing of seventeen CVA alumni participants. This blend of new and familiar faces brought energy, enthusiasm, and an assurance that this special event will be thriving for years to come.

The event successfully raised over $50,000. All of these proceeds support the Martha B. Webber Scholarship Fund in their goal of helping Maine student-athletes reach their potential at CVA.

Thank you to all whom participated in the 2010 CVA Sugarloaf Golf Classic. We hope to see you, and many new faces, next summer for another year of great golf, great spirits and a great cause.

One day last fall, my daughter Julia called excitedly to tell me that Patty Ritzo and the language teachers at CVA -- Ragan Beauregard (French) and Ingrid Sjulander (Spanish) -- were organizing a cultural learning experience in Europe. I thought, “haven’t these kids travelled enough this year with all of their ski adventures? Ski equipment, entry fees, tuition and now this!?” I was skeptical.

And then she told me the itinerary: 10 days in London, Paris and Rome. Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, the Tour d ‘Eiffel, Montmartre and Sacre Coeur, the Champs Elysees, the Coliseum, the Sistine Chapel, the Roman Forum and more. My heart sank a little. Our dream had been to take a mother-daughter trip to France and Italy someday-- perhaps in a couple of years, after graduation from CVA.

So... there was only one thing to do: CHAPERONE!! I volunteered. And the rewards were tremendous. Julia and I got to take our mother-daughter adventure together. We lived history, photographed each other in the gardens of Europe and ate escargots and gelato. She skillfully balanced time with her friends, teachers, and time with me. (Thank you for that gift, Jules!)

I can now count as friends the students, CVA teachers and mothers with whom I had the privilege of travelling. (It’s hard not to bond when you share a six person sleeper car on the overnight train from Paris to Rome!!)

But perhaps most importantly, I got to see CVA from the inside out. I witnessed firsthand the special relationship that the students have with their teachers -- intimate connections born of a small school environment where every student is valued for what she or he has to give. The CVA students were mature beyond their years. They travelled easily, walking over ten miles each day. (“This sure beats travelling with skis, boots and poles,” one student exclaimed!) Despite their obvious differences, the students were most respectful of one another and others around them. And they approached each day with gusto, finding time to admire art, visits sites “off the grid,” complete their school work, shop for special gifts and perform ski-like jumps off the walls and rails of Europe.

I returned with only one question for Julia. Where is CVA going next year??!!

Judy and Julia Savage '12

This spring my mother and I went on the school trip to London, Paris, and Rome. I remember, I was on the phone with my mom, sometime in December. I told her about it, and she jokingly asked if she could go. As a chaperone, she said. Little did I know that in a few short months, we would be driving to Boston Logan airport to board a plane to London.

I won’t lie, at first I was a little bummed that my mom was going to be going on this trip with me. One of my best friends and I had been counting down to this trip for ages. But I couldn’t be happier with how the trip turned out with my mom there. It was the first time I actually spent time with her since I started CVA in the fall. In London we had time to just wander around the city, but we also went on guided tours. One night, my mom and I decided that we wanted to see the play Les Miserables, and it was great to share that with her. The nice thing about being with my mom was that when I wanted to be with her, she was there, but if I wanted to go off with my friends I could do that too. It was a nice balance for me. When we went to Paris a couple of days later, my mom got so excited. Out of all of the cities that we went to, I know that it was Paris that she really wanted to share with me. She had lived there when she was my age, and she always wanted to take me there. Seeing her so excited really made me excited to explore the city and its culture. And then there was Rome. Rome was special for both of us, because neither of us had ever been there. It was so much fun to be seeing things for the first time, and knowing that she had never seen them too. We were both in such awe of the city. Overall, the trip was such a great experience for me. But being able to share it with my mother just made it that much more special.

I’m still in real estate in Boulder and enjoying time with the kids. Miss the colors at Sugarloaf this time of year, and always nostalgic about CVA and the good memories.”

Eric Chamberlin sent the following update, “I am thoroughly enjoying the beginning of 2010-2011 as I have entered a new role here at CVA. I started as an alumnus, moved into being an employee and now I am also a parent. Madeline, my oldest daughter, started this year as an 8th grader in the snowboard program. It is surreal at times to see her walk down the hallway on her way to class. She is really enjoying school so far and I hope that this is the beginning of a long, happy experience here at CVA.”

I fixed that by attending the Oxford 250 car race this summer, I have added Carrabassett Valley to my list of places to visit in the 2011 year.”

Founder and Producer of the Full Circle Project Matt Philippi '04 sent this synopsis of this profound effort.

The story begins when I was sitting on my porch in Salt Lake City, UT, nursing a knee surgery. I was complaining to my roommate about my knee injury and I was trying to figure out how to use my skiing for some good, and how to break out of the mold of skiing for other people (whether performing at a competition or film shoot). I wanted to find a way to give back to the places that I, as a professional skier, had the privilege to visit. We decided to do just that.

The first part of the project was to assemble a team. Dan Marion '05 and Taylor Felton '05, both CVA alumni and pro skiers, joined the crew. It was awesome to have a group of BIG DOGS together for our adventure. I contacted my good friend from Colorado College, Aidan Haley, and he jumped on board and took a leadership role through filming, co-producing, and directing the project. Another college friend and current roommate, Jack Tolan, is a great musician and pro telemark skier. Jack produced all of our music and skied in the film as well. To wrap it up, my good friend and ski photographer Michael Brown got the photo side of it done. A group of my best friends combined forces and we made the most of it. It was the best working environment I have ever been a part of!

Sadly, soon after the decision to create a community service and skiing documentary, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake and subsequent 70+ foot tsunami struck just north of Concepcion, Chile. I had spent time in this area before and when I heard about the destruction I knew that we were going there to help. I contacted my good Chilean/Israeli friend, Osvaldo “Chico” Rosemberg, who had a house on the coast near Concepcion. He told me that his house had been washed into the Pacific Ocean by the tsunami and that he would be heading back from Israel to assess the damage and to see his family. Ultimately, Chico would be our guide for the trip.

Chico helped us get in contact with Un Techo Para Chile (A Roof For Chile). Un Techo is an organization that, among other projects, builds small houses for poor families who are stuck in slums. They shifted their focus to disaster relief work after the quake and have been building camps for those displaced by the destruction. We helped Un Techo build a kindergarten and a playground for a community of those displaced by the tsunami.

The six weeks we spent in Chile were amazing and I could go on for days about it. The best part of the project, however, was some of the basic things I learned on the trip. Our experience with the Chilean volunteers taught me about generosity and sharing. We had a group of twenty volunteers and we all stayed on the floor of one classroom in a school near to our work site. At first it was uncomfortable being thrown into such close quarters with a group of strangers but it quickly became clear that our Chilean friends would treat us as if we were family. We shared everything, from cooking, cleaning, and construction, to the one mobile Internet device we had.

I also learned just how much I love my friends. To have a group of friends who were willing to work their hardest at each of their special skills and put it toward making the FullCircle Project happen was an amazing experience. The trip would not have happened without each individual involved giving their full effort. I am forever grateful.

The most valuable lesson I learned is to appreciate every day. The widespread destruction from the earthquake and tsunami showed me just how fragile life can be and reminded me how we are at the mercy of Mother Nature. I learned to enjoy everyday because tomorrow it all might be swept into the sea.

Please keep an eye for next summer’s FullCircle Project. Visit www.TheFullCircleProject.com for more information.

This August, CVA held the first annual Get Back & Give Back Weekend. The event was designed to provide CVA alumni with a new summer opportunity to come together and reconnect with friends, teachers and coaches. During the day the group dedicated their time towards landscaping and maintenance projects around campus and throughout the dorms. The guests were also given time to hike, swim, and enjoy the beauty of Carrabassett Valley in the summer time.

The outcome of the weekend was nothing short of inspiring. Every participant worked extremely hard on their tasks. The group tackled many different projects including clearing and chipping trees and brush, gardening, painting, cleaning, and moving furniture. At the end of the event, the King Cummings Campus was looking wonderful and the work had contributed greatly towards the school’s preparation for the upcoming school year.

In addition to accomplishing a tremendous amount of work, the most inspiring aspect of this event were the attitudes and enthusiasm of all those involved. Stories were told, memories were revisited and a love and appreciation for the CVA community was evident.

It is our hope at CVA that this weekend will become a lasting tradition among CVA alumni and friends and an opportunity to reconnect during the summer months. Thanks to all who made the 2010 Get Back & Give Back Weekend a great success: Steve Hinman ’88, Tyler Kipp ’97 and his wife Kate, Tim Ingraham ’98, Jolie Ritzo ’99, Johnny Ritzo ’01 and Sarah Buck, Andy Willihan ’02 and guest Katie, Jim Whitledge ’05, Zack Brandwein ’05, Jamie Potter ’98, Simon Lynes ’10, James Pelletier ’03, Kate Webber Punderson ’89, Sawyer Fahy ’02, Chad Coleman, Bonnie Potter, Jon and Andi Lynes, Liz Thompson ’05, Shelley and Dave Koenig, Karen Lanoe-Egan, Kathie and Natalie Gray, John and Patti Ritzo, John Hansen, Eric Chamberlin ’87, Greg Scribner, and John (Haggie) Hagestrom for all of their help and enthusiasm.

classes are head and shoulders above the quality they received at their home school.” When searching for the words to best summarize Karen and her value to the young minds at CVA, this quote by Kahlil Gibran said it best. “The teacher who is indeed wise, does not bid you to enter the house of his or her wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.”

This past year there has been quite a buzz around the Carrabassett Valley Academy community. however, this buzz was not caused by skiing or snowboarding, but by excellence in teaching. in 2010, CVA Biology and Physics teacher Karen lanoue-egan was nominated for the Williams College olmstead Prize for excellence in Teaching, plus she received similar recognition from The university of Maine. Along with these honors, Karen receives continuous praise from past students for whom she formed strong foundations for college sciences. After hearing second-hand of her greatness, i was anxious to sit down with Karen and ask her, “What makes you such a great teacher?” To which she replied, “My classes are challenging and i expect my students to be prepared and to give me their full attention.” i jokingly added, “or else...” her brief pause and chuckle told me right away that there is no “or else”. She both gains and reciprocates total respect in her classroom, and in turn optimizes every student’s learning potential. She added that having more of a science background as opposed to one of teaching, makes her less afraid to give students details. it’s the retention of those details that keep her students a step ahead when progressing to the college classroom.

While speaking with some of Karen’s peers at CVA, it became apparent that her reputation stretched far beyond the eyes of her students. john ritzo, CVA headmaster said “Karen lanoue-egan is a major asset to CVA. her commitment to excellence in her teaching is a cornerstone of the academic program. CVA alumni report from college that having attended Karen’s science classes has them extremely well prepared for higher level courses.” eric Chamberlin '86, Director of Academics had this to say about Karen, “Karen’s high standards have been a major factor in CVA’s academic success. We have heard from students who came from other schools how Karen’s

CVA Teacher Recognized for Excellenceby Waylon Wolfe, CVA Marketing Officer

“Karen is a truly remarkable teacher. Her dedication to her students is endless. I’ve enjoyed every one of her classes that I’ve taken. Not only is Karen very knowledgeable in her subjects, but she is an effective teacher. She always provides each student with the tools needed to understand the lesson material. As a CVA graduate, I feel that Karen’s teaching has prepared me well for college.”

Amie Rowland '101st CVA student accepted to harvard university

“I remember that Karen demanded good, quality work from her students. It was her Advanced Biology program that allowed me to move ahead in my college curriculum, which eventually led to my pursuit of medicine. I am grateful to Karen for her creation of a demanding science curriculum at CVA that prepared me for college and a career in medicine. “

As we focus on community at CVA, several examples come to mind to reflect upon. One aspect of community came to light this summer when a prominent alumnus stepped-up to help another. This past August, CVA graduate Alex Tuttle ’09 competed in the Junior World S n o w b o a r d c r o s s Championships in New Zealand. To his delight, Tuttle would have his very own personal coach throughout the event: two-time gold medalist and fellow CVA alumnus, Seth Wescott ’94.

Going into the event, Tuttle had placed in the top ten, in ten of his last 13 races. Seeing immense potential for greatness in their sport, Wescott jumped at the chance to mentor the young racer. Wescott’s support would prove valuable as Tuttle was plagued with a knee injury

and was in a field of over fifty of the world’s best racers.

As they packed two time trials and four heats into one day of racing, all of the athletes would be tested. With Wescott by his side, Tuttle

went on to finish first among his American counterparts, and third overall. With this big finish under his belt, Tuttle will forge ahead with his sights on the 2010 World Cup and a spot on the U.S. National Team.

Giving back, a community concept personified in

Alex Tuttle’s and Seth Wescott’s journey to New Zealand. One Big Dog helping out another and bringing success and pride home to Sugarloaf and Carrabassett Valley Academy.

The 21st Winter Olympics came to a close with the United States having their most successful Olympics in history. The games were exciting to watch and fulfilled their goal of bringing together the nations of the world to build a peaceful and better world through sport.

Eighteen Olympic medals were available in ski racing and snowboardcross in Vancouver. A small academy located in the western mountains of Maine had a hand in producing two of the Olympians that earned four of those medals. In the overall medal count Carrabassett Valley Academy alumni earned 10% of the possible US medals in Vancouver, 22% of the gold medals. Bode Miller’s gold, silver and bronze and Seth’s gold surpasses the entire Olympic medal count for 9 of the 24 nations competing in these winter games.

The Olympics bring together the world. As a nation, we are reminded of the great spirit that is the United States. Our Olympians make us proud. Bode, Seth and Emily Cook all honed their skills on Sugarloaf bringing the Olympic dream even closer to home. Today Carrabassett Valley Academy student-athletes walk the same hallways, train on the same mountain and share the same goals as their Olympian mentors.
