IntroductionThis document contains a number of printable items for Spell It! 1st Class. The purpose of these printables is explained below.

Activities for differentiationThese printable worksheets give teachers/children a menu of options for additional spelling work depending on the child’s abilities. It is recommended that children themselves decide which of the activities they would like to do. The activities range from simply writing out the list words using capital letters or in different colours (below-level) to arranging the list words in alphabetical order and writing stories using list words (stretch). This gives the child autonomy to pick the activity that they feel capable of completing and caters to varying abilities within the classroom.

The complete list of worksheets is as follows:

Spelling Dots: children write the list words 3 times using dots and then join the dots together

Capital Letters: children write the list words 3 times using capital letters

Rainbow Words: children write the list words 3 times in different colours

ABC Words: children write the list words in alphabetical order 3 times

Vowels and Consonants: children write the list words using red maker/crayon for vowels and blue for consonants

Rhyming Words: children chose 10 list words and write a rhyming word for each one

Fancy Letters: children write the list words in fancy writing

Word Pyramid: children write each list word in a pyramid

Super Sentences: children write 6 sentences, each containing a list word

Silly Sentences: children write 4 silly sentences, each containing a list word

Draw and Spell: children draw a picture of 6 list words and write the word beneath the picture

Spelling Stories: children write a story using some list words

Teachers can print out multiple copies of each template and store them in the classroom as a bank of worksheets to hand out as required. Children can select their activity and the teacher can give them the corresponding template. The teacher can write/display the unit list words from the book on the IWB or the children can reference the list words for the relevant unit in their book.

FlashcardsThese are flashcards containing the list words for each unit in the book that can be printed out and displayed. There are two versions of each set of flashcards – the first set simply lists the words while the second set lists the words but has the focus sound bolded within the word. The purpose of the bolding is to draw children’s attention to the focus sound.
