DESKTOP PUBLISHING PROGRAM
Desktop Publishing
DTP involves using a microcomputer and mouse, scanner, laser printer, and DTP software for mixing text and graphics to produce high-quality printed output.
Characteristics: Mix of text with graphics Varied type and layout styles Use of files from other programs Page description language
Mix of Text with Graphics
It allows to manage and merge text with graphics.
DTP programs can display the work in WYSIWYG (“wizzy-wig”) stands for “What You See Is What You Get”.
It means that the text and graphics appear on the display screen exactly as they will print out.
Varied Type and Layout Styles
DTP provide a variety of fonts or typestyles.
You can create all kinds of rules, borders, columns, & page numbering styles.
Style Sheet – enables to choose and record the settings that determine the appearance of the pages.
Use of Files from Other Programs Most DTP programs don’t have all the
features of full-fledged word processing or computerized drawing & painting programs.
Page Description Language

PROJECT MANAGEMENTSOFTWARE
What is a project?
A project is a one-time operation consisting of several tasks that must be completed during a stated period of time.
What is a Project Management Software? A PMS is a program used to plan, schedule,
and control resources (people, costs, & equipment) required to complete a project on time.
It would show the scheduled beginning & ending dates for a particular task, called a milestone.
Example… Microsoft Project for Windows
Two Important Tools in PMS
Gantt Chart It uses lines & bars to indicate the duration of a series of
tasks. The time scale may range from minutes to years. It allows to see whether tasks are being completed on
schedule.
PERT Chart (Program Evaluation Review Technique) It shows not only the timing but also relationships among the
tasks of a project. The relationships are represented by lines that connect
boxes describing the tasks.
COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN
What is a Computer-Aided Design? A CAD program is a software program for the design of
products and structures. It helps architects design buildings & work spaces. It also helps engineers design cars, planes, & electronic
devices. The product can be drawn in three dimensions & then
rotated on the screen so the designer can see all sides.
Examples are Autosketch, EasyCAD2, CorelCAD, TurboCAD
What is a CADD?
CADD (Computer-Aided Design and Drafting) is a software that helps people do drafting.
It includes symbols (points, circles, straight lines, arcs) that help the user put together graphic elements, such as the floor plan of a house.
Examples are Autodesk’s AutoCAD and Intergraph’s Microstation.
What is CAD/CAM?
Computer/Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing is a software that allows products designed with CAD to be input to an automated manufacturing system that makes the products.
DRAWING & PAINTING PROGRAMS
Types of Computer Art Programs Drawing Program
It is a graphics software that allows users to design & illustrate objects & products.
Examples are CorelDraw, Illustrator, Freehand & Sketcher
Painting Program It is a graphics program that allows users to simulate painting
on screen. A mouse is used to simulate a paintbrush. It allows to select “brush” sizes & colors. Examples are Paint, Adobe Photoshop
HYPERTEXT
What is Hypertext?
It is a software that allows users to have fast & flexible access to information in large documents, constructing associations among data items as needed.
The term is coined by computer visionary Ted Nelson.
It is used in accessing Web sites.
MULTIMEDIA AUTHORING SOFTWARE
What is a Multimedia Authoring Software? It enables creators to combine not only
text & graphics but animation, video, voice & sound effects.
It is a combination of hardware & software that incorporates multiple media within a desktop computer system.
Who are the people who create multimedia presentations? project managers creative directors content & subject
