Alberta’s minimum wage increased Press Release

Alberta’s general minimum wage will increase to $10.20 from $9.95 per hour. The liquor server minimum wage will rise to $9.20 from $9.05 per hour. The increase is based on a for-mula used since 2011 that links the general wage rate to annual increases in Average Weekly

Earnings (AWE) and the Con-sumer Price Index (CPI) in Al-berta. In the past year, AWE rose 3.3 per cent in Alberta, while the CPI rose 1.4 per cent. The aver-age of 2.3 per cent (plus round-ing for easier employer calcula-tions) translates into an increase of 25 cents per hour to the gen-eral minimum wage rate.

“While Alberta has the lowest percentage of employees earning minimum wage in the country, these individuals form an impor-tant part of our workforce,” said Kyle Fawcett, Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour. “Many work in the service and retail sectors and are gaining the experience they need to succeed. These changes will give them a

modest increase while keeping the viability of their employers in mind as well.” Minimum wage facts* Approximately 25,700 individuals, or 1.5 per cent of employees in Alberta, earn minimum wage, compared to 6.8 per cent nationally and 9.1 per cent in Ontario. * When Alberta’s high personal exemption and low tax rates are factored in, the new general minimum wage ranks second highest in Canada, after Ontario. * Government policy specifies a $1 differen-tial between the general minimum wage and the liquor server rate to ac-count for the tips gen-erally earned by liquor servers. Employers and em-ployees with questions about minimum wages can contact the Em-ployment Standards Contact Centre at 780-427-3731, or toll-free at 1-877-427-3731 or visit www.work.alberta.ca/es.

Riversdale remains optimistic By Joni MacFarlane Editor

About 25 people turned out for an update about proposed coal mining operations on Grassy Mountain about six kilo-metres north of Blairmore. Although coal prices remain low, senior executives said Riversdale Resources remains focused on the Crowsnest Pass project and expects production to be-gin in about four more years. Over the past winter, the company began a drilling program to determine coal quality, said Operations Manager Peter Murray, and samples have been sent for analysis. Geotechnical drilling will start in August, said Murray, to see what the surface formation strengths are, as well as more quality sampling to “join the whole sequence together”. Murray also said Riversdale has erected signs on the Grassy Mountain access road to keep the public aware of its opera-tions and ensure public safety. Over the next three or four years, he said, access will become restricted and eventually the road will be closed to the public. Community Liaison Keith Bott told the audience Rivers-dale has been communicating with neighbouring communi-ties and has established a community advisory committee to look at conservation, recreation and the historical context. “The role behind the committee is to sit down and discuss some of the issues that may arise as a result of the mine com-ing into the community,” said Bott. Managing Director Steve Mallyon said the Crowsnest Pass project will produce a hard coking coal destined for steel pro-ducing markets in Asia, Brazil and possibly, North America. “In doing so, we can attract long-term contracts and premi-um pricing, which helps the stability of the project going for-ward,” said Mallyon. “The objective of all this work is to try and reverse history somewhat... The worse thing we can do is start a project out with low coal prices that it closes down very quickly as has been the case with many small mines on the periphery of Grassy Mountain, Bellevue, Frank, etc.” Currently, there is not a lot of competition for contract-ing and lab services, said Mallyon, and Riversdale is moving quickly to take advantage of that. Mallyon said they have also joined the Canadian Coal As-sociation and provided input to the South Saskatchewan Re-gional Land Use Plan, even though it does not impact the

Grassy Mountain project directly. One of the key issues is water and the huge demand of water in the MD of Ranchland area. Options Riversdale is looking at are using municipal waste water and utilizing wa-ter from old mine cavities that have filled with water over the years, said Mallyon. “The two-fold approach is to look at the ability to utilize

that water if possible, if the regulator will allow it, but also to make a positive impact on runoff into the Crowsnest River,” he said. Riversdale is considering nine options for rail transporta-tion and hopes to reduce them to about three by September. Ideally, said Mallyon, they would bring rail directly to the site, to ensure safety and provide the highest efficiency. Rail options will be presented to the public for input, said

Mallyon, once cost-benefit analyses are completed. Millenium EMS Solutions Ltd. are doing the feasibility study, which will be finished in the third quarter of 2015 and an Environmental Impact Assessment will be completed by mid-2015, Mallyon said. A construction period of about 18 months is expected to start in 2017 and production would get underway towards the end of 2018. A 25-year lifespan is a reasonable length, but the engineering and feasibility studies will determine this further, he added. The company expects to produce about two million tonnes annually with potential for up to four million, he added, In terms of the financial picture, Anthony Martin, Chief Financial Officer, said Riversdale is well funded with sup-portive shareholders. Although prices remain low, the world’s largest mines are producing record numbers, “so it really shows that those people with the best quality assets are still producing a sig-nificant amount of coal”. When pushed for a break-even price, Martin said it would be somewhere around $100/tonne. Mallyon also said because Riversdale is somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of size, they are not as vulner-able to price fluctuations and would be able to get long-term stable contracts for their coal. Also of interest, said Martin, is that China has increased coal imports from Canada from seven per cent to 15 per cent over the last year. “From our point of view, we do see this market not neces-sarily improving significantly in the short term, but in the me-dium term we do see it coming back… the reality is that there are a lot of marginal projects that may not still be around at that time,” he said. “We’re quite confident and comfortable in the position we’re in given the general market at the mo-ment.” New hire David Leslie, Vice President Technical Services, introduced himself and said he’ll be running the feasibility study and ensuring the regulatory applications are submitted on time to move the project forward. Mallyon said the company’s business plan is to employ contract services and have as few people as possible at the mine site. For example, this would include equipment suppli-ers and maintenance services. Traditionally, he said, mining operations employ five to seven people in support services.

Operations Manager Peter Murray provides an up-date on Riversdale’s drilling status at an open house on May 29.

Oh what a night. Beginning with the silence of shocking statis-tics showing the devastation of mental illness, and moving to the heartbreak of personal stories, last week saw residents come together in a way seldom seen. The event was Clara’s Big Ride and as inspir-ing and moving as Clara Hughes was, the eve-ning wasn’t about her. And the story wasn’t only hers. It was about all of us and all our stories. The message brought to those of us in atten-dance – told so humbly and with such grace – was that we all suffer from the havoc that mental illness wreaks upon society, and that together we can break the cycle of fear and isolation felt by those afraid of being “found out”. Those who suffer in silence need to know that there is help available, that there are hands out-stretched ready to catch them, and that healthy emotional wellness and a life beyond pain can be yours. It was an incredibly moving and heartwarming experience to feel the connection with hundreds of people in our small community who believe in a caring, compassionate approach to a subject that has for too long been kept in the dark. As witnessed by the courage and celebration of those who work to help others, we’ve opened the door and let a crack of light into this world. Let’s make journeys like Clara’s Big Ride, a thing of the past and no longer necessary. Let’s keep the conversation going. Let’s share our stories and help end the stigma around mental illness.

Rum Runner Days remains deferred

By Joni MacFarlane

Editor

Council voted to defer Rum Runner Days to

2015 to allow time to plan and recruit volunteers

to organize the event.

On Feb. 18, Sheldon Steinke, chief administra-

tive officer, advised council that last year’s Chair-

person was out of the country for the next four

months and it was getting late to begin planning

anything for this summer.

He recommended that deferring the event would

allow administration time to “research options,

implications and budget for a 2015 event to po-

tentially include Thunder in the Valley and Rum

Runner Days”.

There is a total of $40,000 identified in the 2014

triennial budget for the event.

“It’s almost too late in the day to start planning

a Rum Runners event… I think if we defer it for a

year, we could have better planning in place,” said

Councillor Shar Lazzarotto.

Mayor Blair Painter said he’d like to see the mu-

nicipality start to canvass for volunteers as soon

as possible. Councillor Lazzarotto disagreed. She said she

believes it will be difficult to get volunteers over

the next few months because of the upcoming

events that rely on volunteers such as the Bunny

Bonspiel, the Chamber of Commerce Lifestyle &

Outdoor Adventure Show, Kananaskis Pro Ro-

deo, and the Hillcrest Mine Disaster 100th An-

niversary. “You’re going to have volunteer burnout,” she

said. Councillor Marlene Anctil also pointed out that

with the Crowsnest Pass Show & Shine moving to

another weekend and the Taste of Crowsnest not

happening, “it doesn’t leave much in between”.

It was agreed to defer Rum Runner Days and

start working towards 2015 by advertising for vol-

unteers at the end of July.

Municipal council briefs By Joni MacFar-lane Editor

Snow clearing While residents are pleased to see the last of winter, mu-nicipal council wants to review the snow clearing and ice con-trol policy while it’s fresh on their minds. Issues discussed include clearing mu-nicipal sidewalks, clearing back alleys in locations where it’s the main access, ensuring snowplows aren’t impeded by parked vehicles, and shortening the time-frame for clearing main routes.

Pass Piranhas Council approved a request to waive swimming pool fees of $577 for the Pass Piranha’s Swim Meet. The request was approved under a new Community Funding & Support Policy implemented to standardize and streamline support requests received by the municipality from community or-ganizations. Since there was no specific dollar amount requested by the Swim Club and it was unknown how much the group ex-pected to fundraise, Council believed waiving the rental fee was appropriate. A pot of $20,000 was allocated during the budget process and funding requests are allocated on a first come-first serve basis.

Request to own land

A request to pur-

chase land owned by the municipality was approved for 3,600 square feet at a rate of $4 per square foot. The applicant owns the west half of two lots in Hillcrest and wanted to buy the municipal piece so they can build a ga-rage.

Sinister 7 Road closures and a waiver for the Off-Highway Vehicle Bylaw were approved for Sinister 7 Ul-tra Relay sched-uled for July 4 through July 6.

Utility rate bylaw

Final reading passed on the utility rate bylaw for municipal services. On July 1, utili-ty bills will go up for wastewater, water and solid waste. The total residential aver-age rate increase is 4.67 per cent over a two year period. It is com-prised of 8.4 per cent to wastewa-ter, 4.5 per cent for water and 1.5 per cent for solid waste. There are no increases to recycling costs. The average monthly increase is $3.02 per month or $36.24 per year. As part of the bylaw, effective July 1, the mu-nicipality will not enter into any new utility ac-counts with non-property owners. Effective July 1, 2015, all non-owner utility ac-

counts will revert to the property owner, not the tenant. A contract depos-it of $160 will be charged.

FCSS Bylaw An amendment to the bylaw that over-sees the operation of the local Family & Community Sup-port Services was ap-

proved on May 20. It sets the quorum at four members with one being a coun-cillor, clarifies the Board’s authorities, and adds a second council member. It also clarifies that pre-approved expenses to attend other regional FCSS meetings and conferences may be reimbursed.

People have been using the area off Grassy Mountain Road in Blairmore as a dumping ground for garbage, construction material and tree debris.

Alberta celebrates emergency medical services By Joni MacFarlane Editor

In celebration of EMS Week, mem-bers of the South Zone EMS provided the public with information and cake at the Crowsnest Health Centre on May 27. Responsibility for EMS was transi-tioned from municipalities and orga-nizations to Alberta Health Services in April 2009. Their mandate is to pro-vide safe, high quality, patient-focused care that is accessible and sustainable. EMS is a key part of the health care system and an important component of the public safety net. Services in-clude ground ambulance, air ambu-lance, inter-facility transfers and EMS dispatch. Alberta has about 550 ambulances with 4,000 EMS practitioners to pro-vide emergency care. The STARS helicopters fly 1,000 missions every year and 8,500 patients are transferred by fixed-wing planes. There are 152 ambulance stations across the province and EMS dispatch receives 1,100 calls every day. About 280,000 911 calls are received annu-ally.

New Authority to replace sports & recreation committee By Joni MacFarlane Editor

In order to increase authorities and respon-sibilities, Council approved creation of a new Park & Recreation Authority that will eventually replace the existing Sport & Rec-reation Advisory Committee. Doing so, said the Director of Community Services Lyle Hannan, will give them the same level of authority as the Municipal Ski Hill Authority and the Family & Community Support Services Board. A recent collaborative review of munici-pal boards and committees was held with council and administration to understand the way the municipality was using boards and committees. During the review, Hannan said council was very clear that they value the role of committees and that they want volun-teers’ experience to be valuable. “So how do we make change that the vol-unteers will like but will also make the sys-tem more efficient,” Hannan said. “We met and talked about a number of issues with the existing structure, the way we’re using committees and boards basical-ly. Some of the issues were things like mak-ing sure boards had clear mandates, that they knew what they were supposed to be doing, and that the community understood what the boards’ roles were.” Hannan said part of the discussion also cen-tered around the fact that some committees, societies and boards had decision making au-thority making it easier to attract volunteers. “It’s a more fulfilling volunteer role than just reviewing issues and making a recom-mendation to council all the time, which is what the Sport & Rec was [doing],” he add-ed. Changing to a Parks & Recreation Author-ity will fill several purposes. First, it clearly identifies the mandate to both the community and the committee. Year-round, general usage facilities such as the M.D. McEachern Community Centre, Elks Hall, Albert Stella Memorial Arena, Crowsnest Sports Complex, parks, trails, playgrounds, sports fields and programming will fall under the responsibility of the new Parks & Rec Authority, said Hannan.

Second, as with any of these groups, op-erating and capital budgets are developed in conjunction with administration, which will then be presented for approval to council. “They don’t have the authority just to set the budget, they have the authority to request a budget,” said Hannan. “But in terms of passing policies that affect how we run those facilities, such as rental policies, pricing, that would be approved at the Authority or Board level.” Currently, the Ski Hill Author-ity and FCSS set their own fees and prices, and Hannan said he envisions the new Authority will operate the same way. Part of their mandate will also be to increase utilization by looking at hours of opera-tions, rental agreements, future plans and anything that impacts the use of those facilities, said Hannan. Anything with a financial impact will be included in the Board’s budget proposal and council representatives who sit on these boards, will provide input into financial decisions, he added. Within the Community Ser-vices Department, Hannan said, they’ve now reviewed sev-eral committees including the Swimming Pool Society which they are reformatting, the Ski Hill, FCSS, and the new Parks & Rec Authority. Remaining is the Culture & Heritage Advi-sory Committee who will meet with council and administration in the near future to discuss their role and future, if any. “We don’t want to have a committee just for the sake of having a committee, so if there’s a purpose, great,” said Hannan. “We as a department don’t have a mandate to deliver facil-ities and services [in the culture and heritage area] because the

community is doing it... we have no cultural facilities that the municipality directly man-ages... The difference is that with parks and rec, the pool or the ski hill, we have ameni-ties, facilities, programs that we administer directly so we have boards in place to give us guidance and policies on how to run them and work with user groups that use those fa-cilities. In the case of Culture & Heritage,

for the most part, we have groups that are running those on our behalf or doing the service for the municipality and we’re just supporting them with funds or in-kind con-tributions.” Hannan said there are other committees and advisory boards but they aren’t part of his department and so were not part of his review with council.

Crowsnest Pass celebrates an evening of mental wellness with Clara Hughes By Joni MacFarlane Editor

It started with the odd blue bike scat-tered here and there throughout Crows-nest Pass. It grew to a groundswell of blue bikes everywhere and culminated in an eve-ning of shared stories, bringing both laugh-ter and tears in equal measure. Clara’s Big Ride and the community event celebrated on May 28, was a moving and heartwarming experi-ence for more than 400 people that shed light on the tragedy that is mental illness and gave hope for those suffer-

ing in silence. Since March, six-time Olympian Clara Hughes has been rid-ing across Canada in support of men-tal health. Over 110 days Clara’s Big Ride for Bell Let’s Talk is visiting 95 communi-ties in all territories and provinces and on Wednesday, May 28, she chose Crowsnest Pass as her stopping point. A group of volun-teers made the event a memorable one de-voted to the mental wellness of Crowsnest Pass and a celebration of local champions. The evening kicked off with a Hawaiian-

themed fundraising event called “PuPus in the Pass” aimed to “poo-poo” the stigmas attached to mental ill-ness. About 150 people -many styling Hawai-ian outfits - attended the event to enjoy Hawaiian appetizers catered by Country Encounters, a live auc-tion, and two speakers. Guest speaker Craig Heisinger, Assistant GM with the Winni-peg Jets, opened the evening followed by a young writer and stand-up comic, Kevin Breel. At only 20-years-old, Breel has become a mental health activist

seen on media outlets around the world, in-cluding a TED talk titled, “Confessions of a Depressed Comic” that went instantly viral with nearly two millions views. His story, told at “Pu-Pus”, was at once both heartbreaking and in-spiring. A live auction then took place with auc-tioneer Lowry Toombs getting top dollar for two Cruiser Bikes, a limited-edition NHL autographed jersey, and a Clara-Hughes autographed jersey. The event then moved downstairs where a video of shocking statistics on mental illness echoed eerily through the si-lence. Despite a room-ful of 400 people, the impact of the video was deafening. Randi-Lynn Rinaldi and Pat Rypien, both with well-known fami-lies in the Crowsnest Pass, shared their cou-

rageous stories of loss and grief within their own families from the devastating mental ill-nesses. The audience, clear-ly moved, then took an emotional right turn as emcee Derek Forgie had them in stitches with his hu-morous perspective on the community’s unique name before his introduction to keynote speaker, Clara Hughes. Despite 76 days, 182 community events and having ridden 165 ki-lometres in six hours, Hughes was clearly struck by the presence of “how many blue bikes were out on the road, out in the most unusual places”. Hughes began by saying how great she felt crossing into Al-berta. “I felt like I was com-ing home today,” she said to screams of ap-plause. “It’s a real gift to be

here to tonight to fol-low such beautiful sto-ries with Randi-Lynn, with Pat,” she said. “I’m not the highlight tonight, the highlight has already happened with what they shared and I applaud both those women for their courage.” “Every single com-munity that we move through, we hear and we feel and we listen to struggle but we also hear and feel and lis-ten to the most incred-ible strength of people refusing to give up, re-fusing to be silent, re-fusing to not do noth-ing about what has been lost and who has suffered in silence and what has to be done,” said Hughes. “And what I have seen makes the 7,000-almost kilome-tres seem to be quite insignificant because the strength and the courage and the te-nacity I have seen of Canadians in commu-

nities big and small is something that truly moves mountains.” She said mental ill-ness was not some-thing a person choos-es, but is a sickness that manifests itself differently in everyone. “And this sickness, though it doesn’t af-fect each person in-dividually, it affects every single one of us because... every person we’ve met and there’s been about 47,000 so far, is affect-ed directly by someone who is struggling if it is not them,” Hughes said. “So why are we not talking about this more? Why are we not talking about the struggle, talking about the reality of what so many families are liv-ing, so many families end up torn apart from it because they feel they can’t get help and they can’t say any-thing.”

Ride for mental health

From page 8...

Hughes said many people fear they will be judged, ridiculed or seen as weak, or that they may lose their job or their family or their place in the community. She then shared her personal story of how she struggled throughout her life, poured her energy into sport until after seeing that reaching her Olympic dreams did not lift her depression, ac-cepted the help that had been offered to her. “If we can leave anything with you tonight it’s this audacious idea of hav-ing hope and never letting go of hope. Hope that things can be better, hope that people can get help, hope that maybe you can be the person that lis-tens to someone and directs them to the right place or the right person at the right time and they get the help that shifts the direction of their life. Anything is possible.” After her speech, local Chairperson Val Breakenridge thanked Hughes for visiting the Pass and congratulated Clara’s team. Breakenridge then presented Hughes with a book filled with signa-tures and comments written by thou-sands of Crowsnest Pass residents on what Clara’s Big Ride and her mental health initiative meant to them. Two women from Piikani Nation traveled specifically to present Hughes with gifts crafted by and given on be-half of their Nation. Vera Potts and Adeline Smith gave Hughes deer antler earrings symboliz-ing a deer running swiftly, a replica of a bow and arrow symbolizing survival and strength, a picture of a woman at water symboling abundance and a journal with a horse on the front

cover to symbolize power. Potts said when she heard Hughes was coming through Crowsnest Pass, she knew she had to go. “First Nations aboriginal youth are the highest [rate of suicide] in Cana-da,” she said. “My heart goes out to my people because so many suffer. We need to get everybody back and feel part of the community.” Potts said she presented the gifts to give Hughes encouragement and strength to guide her safely on her journey.Last, Deputy Mayor Bill Kovach gave a brief speech and presented the Community Champions for Mental Health Awards. “We’d like to take this time to hon-our and thank those people in our community who give so much of their time and energy to promote mental health initiatives,” said Kovach. “Six recipients have been selected whose efforts and achievements are an inspi-ration to us all.” Students from Crowsnest Con-solidated High School and Living-stone School created original pieces of artwork representing their vision of mental wellness. They were Tori Wakaluk, Brittany Jones, Moriah Loseth-Vanderlinden, Tiffany Doug-las, Morgan Michalsky and Anna Blomgren. Awarded for their contributions were Janet Elder, Mike Mertz, Lo-retta Schaufele, Ryan Peebles, the Rinaldi family, and the Ricky Ryp Foundation. According to volunteer John Re-dekopp, over 25 of the blue bikes were also sold. All money raised by the event stays in the Crowsnest Pass and goes to the Ricky Ryp Founda-tion and Darcy’s Nature Walk.

At top, Pat Rypien gets a hug from Clara Hughes while Randi-Lynn Rinaldi looks on. Bottom, guests of the fundraiser “Pu-Pus in the Pass” enjoy comedian Kevin Breel on May 28.

Classmates bring gradto friend’s bedside By Amanda Ruzicka Contributor

For most teenagers, their senior year of high school is one full of excitement and uncertainty. Days consist of catching up on credits and planning for graduation. For Elise Kwan, however, this is not entirely the reality. Kwan, a Grade 12 student at Crowsnest Consolidated High School, was first admitted to the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre in June 2013, before being trans-ferred to Calgary, and later Ed-monton, due to a worsening con-dition and heart complications. She has a multitude of chronic illnesses, causing not only dis-tress to the cardiovascular sys-tem but also causing an inability to create her own hemoglobin, resulting in regular blood trans-

fusions. Kwan was also the first person to obtain a dual-ventricu-lar assisting device. Receiving not only local, but also global attention, Kwan has been given aid by such charities as The Sheckler Foundation, an American charity aimed at as-sisting injured and ill children. Ronald McDonald House chari-ties have also stepped in, housing her family after relocating to be near her. In addition to charitable aid, the community of the Crows-nest Pass and Kwan’s graduating class have been contributing to her betterment as well. Fundraisers, such as “Taco-in-a-Bag Day” have taken place over the past nine months to raise money for Kwan and her family. The money raised, in accor-dance with Scotiabank, will be

used towards such endeavours as medical bills or post-secondary education. During the Crowsnest Consoli-dated High School graduation ceremony, a small speech as well as a video of congratulations was dedicated to Kwan, and on Friday, May 30, a group of 13 CCHS graduates travelled to Edmonton to host an additional graduation ceremony with their friend. “She’s a very strong girl and has never let this get the best of her,” said Alexis Bohmer, friend and classmate. “She isn’t defined by her illness. She’s the most selfless person I’ve ever met.” Kwan was discharged from Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton on May 26 and hopes to lead a free life again in the fol-lowing months.

Apple Cider VinegarApple cider vinegar comes in 2 forms. Store-bought, pasteurized and culinary, or organic, raw (unpasteurized), unfiltered; “with the mother” meaning it has sediment on the bottom that looks unappealing but is in fact what gives it medicinal properties as well as culinary functionality. The following information implies to the latter. Orally, apple cider vinegar alone or with honey has been used for weight loss, leg cramps and pain, queasy stomach, sore throat, sinus problems, high blood pressure, arthritis, detoxification to stimulate thinking and to slow aging, to fight infections and to fight osteoporosis. In addition, it is a great digestive aid and improves circulation; it also supplies the body with amino acids, minerals and vitamins. It is the only vinegar that is safe with candida and yeast issues and is often used in baths for vaginitis.Topically it is used for acne (as a skin toner), as a hair rinse and to soothe: Sunburns, shingles, insect bites, and to prevent dandruff, baldness and itchy scalp. Note: Overuse (~1 cup/day, long term) of apple cider vinegar has been linked with depletion of potassium when used in combination with insulin, laxative herbs and potassium depleting diuretics. Aloe, cascara sagrada, senna (Senakot), rhubarb, castor oil, licorice and horsetail fall under that category. Organic, unfiltered, raw apple cider vinegar from Bragg’s is available locally at The Health Hub in two different sizes: 473ml for $5 and 946ml for $9. Substitute any of your recipes for this versatile and medicinal vinegar!

Test drives donate to high school athletics By Joni MacFarlane Editor

Have you wanted to see how a new F-150 handles on the road? Or how about a 2014 Expedition or Fusion? Now you can test drive a new Ford here in the Crowsnest Pass and know your drive contributed to local students’ supplies. On Saturday, June 7, Crows-nest Consolidated High School will be the scene of a fundraiser for the Crowsnest Consolidated Academic & Athletic Society (CCAAS). Pincher Creek’s Castle Ford

will be bringing in a variety of 2014 vehicles and for every test drive, they will donate $20 to CCAAS. According to Castle Ford’s George Wolstenholme, there will be “almost one of everything”. Kate McNeil, President of the Society, said they are partnering with Lundbreck’s Livingstone School who instigated the event. Castle Ford held the test drive event for schools in Pincher Creek, said McNeil, and Living-stone suggested Crowsnest Con-solidated High School would be an ideal location. Drivers can take vehicles for

a seven to 10 minute test drive, about four to five kilometres, and Ford will donate $20 to CCAAS. Funds will be used to buy school and athletic supplies such as new mats for the gym, sports uniforms, and a new scoreboard. Ford will donate a maximum of $6,000 allowing for 300 peo-ple to drive a brand-new Ford of their choice. A BBQ at the high school park-ing lot will also be held through-out the day. Test drives will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and all drivers must be 18 years of age and over.

Alex and Dani stopped at the Crowsnest Pass Tim Hortons on May 31 enroute from Kelowna to Calgary to perform at a circus event.

Answer

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Dream weaver On May 23 at 11:45 a.m., police received a complaint of a single ve-hicle collision on Highway 3 near the Blairmore centre access. An 84-year-old male from Idaho was heading eastbound when he drove across the eastbound lane and into the north ditch. The driver appeared to have fallen asleep and was not injured. He was issued a violation ticket for care-less driving in the amount of $402.

Handyman On May 21, police received a com-plaint of theft from a garage on 21st Ave. Blairmore. Various tools were stolen some time during the past two weeks. The matter is under investiga-tion.

A heap o’ trouble On May 25 at 2:05 a.m., police re-ceived a complaint of a disturbance at a Blairmore bar. A male was be-ing subdued when a black truck pulled up and the suspect jumped in. The truck sped away hitting four vehicles in the parking lot and later a light standard on Highway 3 in Frank. At about 5 p.m., a 20-year-old male from Calgary was arrested by the Airdrie RCMP and charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, four counts of failing to comply with conditions, two counts of assault, and two counts of failing to remain at scene of an accident. A Justice In-terim Hearing was held and the ac-cused was remanded in custody for a court date of June 3.

Teck supports breast cancer with pink dozer

Press Release

Teck’s Elkview Operations (EVO) is raising awareness of breast cancer and its impact on the local community with a rebuilt pink Caterpillar D10T bulldozer. Elkview’s Superintendent of Operations, Clayton Podrasky, said the idea was raised by a crew member and he supported the initiative to increase aware-ness and conversation around this important issue that im-

pacts many in our communi-ties. “This is an issue that has touched me and others in the community very deeply and I am very proud of the employ-ees for raising it and the opera-tion and company for support-ing this,” said Podrasky. Support for the initiative complements Teck’s focus on community and health. Finning Tractor donated the bright pink facelift for Teck’s D10T bull-dozer, which was in their shop

for reconditioning. Tom Tobin, Finning’s Spar-wood Branch Manager, added, “This was a great project that brought a lot of excitement to our branch. I am sure it will do the same when it goes to work at EVO. I really want to thank the Teck team at EVO for let-ting us be part of such a mean-ingful project.” The pink bulldozer was dis-played for the public on May 26 before it went to work at EVO.

Teck’s Elkview Operations (EVO) is raising awareness of breast cancer and its impact on the local community with a rebuilt pink Caterpillar D10T bulldozer. The “dozer” was brought in for display before starting work on May 26.

Hillcrest 100 releases commemorative coin

Press Release

The Crowsnest Historical Soci-ety is pleased to announce that it will be producing a $10 Crows-nest Pass Trade Dollar to com-memorate the 100th Anniversary of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster, Canada’s worst mining disaster, that occurred on June 19th, 1914 and resulted in the death of 189 coal miners. The obverse of the trade dol-lar features the Hillcrest Mine Disaster Memorial Monument and the pillows surrounding the monument commemorating other Canadian coal mining disasters. Hillcrest Mine Disaster 1914-2014 is inscribed on the trade dollar. The reverse of the coin will fea-ture a scene of Crowsnest Moun-tain and crows in a nest which has been featured on all Crowsnest Pass Trade Dollars produced by

the Society. The society is producing 1,000 nickel/steel Trade Dollars in the denomination of $10. They will be presented in a plastic capsule to preserve them as a commemo-rative souvenir and they will be available for the price of $10. Also the Society will be produc-ing 50 limited edition pure silver versions of the Trade Dollar in a presentation case and each coin will have a numbered limited edi-tion certificate. They will be avail-able for the price of $75 per piece. To commemorate the loss of 189 coal miners in the disaster, the So-ciety will be producing 189 limited edition gold plated coins in a pre-sentation case with a a numbered limited edition certificate. They will be available for the price of $25. The Society will be auctioning the #1 of 50 Silver Hillcrest Mine Disaster Commemorative Trade

Dollars and the #1 and #189 of 189 limited edition Gold Plated Trade Dollars at the Crowsnest Muse-um’s Book Launch, Exhibit Open-ing, and Meet and Greet at the Crowsnest Museum on Wednesday evening, June 18 at the Crowsnest Museum in historic downtown Coleman starting at 7 p.m. Individuals may place advance orders for the nickel/steel, pure silver, and gold plated Hillcrest Mine Disaster Commemorative Trade Dollar by contacting the Crowsnest Museum by phoning 403-563-5434, e-mailing [email protected], or dropping by the Museum at 7701-18th Avenue, Coleman. All proceeds from the sales of the trade dollars will go to the on-going operations of the Crowsnest Museum. For further information contact the Crowsnest Museum at 403-563-5434.

The 100th anniversary of Canada’s worst mining disaster is an important event in not only our community, but in the nation and province. The commemorative events will be featured on national and provincial media bringing at-tention to our community. It is important that an appropriate commemoration is planned and carried out to commemorate this tragedy. Improvements to the Hillcrest Mine Disas-ter Memorial will not only honour those who lost their lives but provide an appropriate commemorative experience for all those who visit the site. It is anticipated that publicity around the event will have an ongoing legacy and in-crease visits to our community as part of an ongoing effort to market our community’s history and our community spirit to not only to live through such a tragedy but to rebuild and survive as a vibrant community that rec-ognizes its past and builds for its future. Improvements to the Hillcrest Ball/Soccer complex will provide a legacy to the com-munity to host future sporting and outdoor events.

Concept drawing of a Crowsnest Pass Trade Dollar to com-memorate the 100th Anniversary of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster.

Invitations have been sent to national, pro-vincial, regional and local dignitaries to par-ticipate in the Commemorative Memorial Ceremony. Also descendants of victims from across the country and overseas are expect-ed to attend the Commemorative Memorial Events.

Representatives of coal mining communi-ties from across the country have been invited as all coal mining disasters in Canada have been commemorated through the National Coal Mining Memorial Markers which sur-round the Hillcrest Mine Disaster Memorial Monument.

Three additional markers will be added to honour those who lost their lives in other Ca-nadian coal mining disaster in which more than three individuals lost their lives. These disasters were missed when the original mon-ument was dedicated in 2000.

Also, local and regional residents will be in attendance to remember and honour those who lost their lives in Canada’s worst mining disaster and to celebrate the spirit of the miner and the community to survive such a tragedy.

How will thecommunity bene t from commemoration of theHillcrest Mine Disaster?
