Various educational opportunities arise from kids designing advertising for local businesses.

Creativity and children are a great mix.

That’s one of the reasons the Langley Advance’s Design an Ad

program has proven so popular in this community through the years.

Local businesses and organizations team up with Grade 4 and 5 students in Langley to design newspaper ads.

And from the minds of these children, creativity flowed freely – without fear of social etiquettes and protocols that tend to come with age and experience.

That inhibition is what makes today’s Design an Ad special section so unique, insisted Advance advertising manager Peggy O’Brien.

In fact, this special section has prov-en so popular in Langley in past that returning students were clamouring to let their creative juices flow again, and new students to the program had heard so

many great things about it, they, too, were anxious to be part, O’Brien explained.

“Every year we enjoy having new class-es join this project. As many students have seen their siblings be involved and

now it is their turn,” she said.

This year, adver-tisers teamed up with the stu-

dents from Alex Hope, Willoughby, Richard Bulpitt, Simonds, Langley Meadows and Shortreed Elementaries, as well

as Douglas Community School.“It is always a pleasure to reach out to

the Langley elementary schools to join us with this incredible project,” O’Brien elaborated.

As O’Brien said, it’s an incredible project because it not only allows the different generations to work

together, it also allows business owners

to see their stores, shops, and companies through the eyes of our commun-ity’s future leaders.

During the past several weeks, the Advance staff has been working with local business and a few hundred students to create what O’Brien described as thoughtful, insightful, colour-ful, and sometimes humour-ous advertisements.

Students not only flexed their creativity. They had to research the companies they designed ads for and learn about what goes into making an effective advertisement, she explained.

As one teacher said, this program is helping make the kids more effective

communicators.“The kids were all very excited to show

off their creations, and it’s contagious,” O’Brien said.

It was exciting not only for the Advance staff, who worked hand-in-hand with the kids and teachers, it was also contagious for the participating businesses.

“I would like to thank all the teach-ers and children who put all the hard work into their master pieces, and also the businesses who stepped outside of the box and joined in this fun venture,” O’Brien said.

This was an “incredible blast for all involved,” O’Brien said, “and we can’t wait to do it again.”
