My dear TRT family,

Since I started my role as a president, each time I enter Temple Rodeph Torah I have the honor of meeting the wonderful members who put their heart into volunteering, to make our community a thriving one. And 2020 is no dif ferent. Our volunteers continue to dream, create and design what we?ll encounter next. I am delighted to see volunteers step up to ensure that meaningful musical worship will continue to be one of the pil lars of our community. Their passion is infectious, and I hope that you will join them.

As 2020 began, we already signed a contract with Rabbi Marc Disick as our interim Rabbi for 2020-2021. And that is a signif icant accomplishment. He will be starting July 1. Rabbi Disick impressed our Search Committee with his candor, professionalism and compassion. As an Interim Rabbi, he is not only going to f il l the duties of a Senior Rabbi, but he is also specif ically trained to help our congregation identify the guiding criteria toward the future of the community. He will work with our leadership as well as with all our members.

We recognize how hard it will be to close a chapter, to reminisce, say thank you, and l?hitraot to Rabbi Weber and Rabbi Stern. A group of creative members is in the midst of planning the Gala Celebration in honor of Rabbi Weber and Rabbi Stern?s retirements. This double-chai chapter is worthy of celebrating and distinguishing a meaningful t ime in our lives together. By now, you should had received the invitation to the Gala Celebration on April 26. The planning for this important event is complex, and your early RSVP is appreciated. We are creating a tribute journal and keepsake containing letters, remembrances and well wishes from dignitaries, colleagues and you, members of TRT. Please make sure your family's warm wishes will be included. Understand we need time in collating and designing the journal before printing deadlines, so please do not delay.

I wanted to share with you a personal experience I had a week or so ago. I attended the Jewish Solidarity March in NYC over the Brooklyn Bridge. I felt as if I was an integral part of our people: the Jewish people. I met hundreds of people, who were standing up for our own freedom of religion, some Jewish, some not. Even those who were not aff il iated with any movement were there to say: We cannot allow fear to occur, and hate has no place here. At t imes, when I was on the bridge I thought: What would have happened if people had spoken up against hate back in Europe in 1939? I realized that we cannot al low fear to scare us into hiding. The consequences are far too dangerous. We must stand up for ourselves and do so together. Seeing thousands of people stand up that day, I felt inspired.

Upcoming Holidays

Tu BiShvatAlthough the celebration of Tu BiShvat has a long and varied history, the theme most commonly ascribed to the holiday today is the environment. It is considered a festival of nature, full of wonder, joy, and thankfulness for creation in anticipation of the renewal of the natural world. During this festival, Jews recall the sacred obligation to care for the world, and the responsibil ity to share the fruits of the earth with all.

Tu BiShvat falls at the beginning of spring in Israel, when the winter rains subside, and the pink and white blossoms of the almond trees begin to bud. It is for this reason that almonds and other fruits and nuts native to the Land of Israel ? barley, dates, f igs, grapes, pomegranates, olives, and wheat ? are commonly eaten during a Tu BiShvat seder (a special ritual meal for the holiday).

Tu BiShvat is f irst mentioned in the Mishnah, the code of Jewish law that dates back to around 200 C.E. There, in Rosh HaShanah 1:1, the text speaks of four dif ferent new years, all of which are connected to an ancient cycle of t ithes. Each year, the Israelites were expected to bring one-tenth (a ?tithe?) of their fruits to the Temple in Jerusalem, where they were offered to God and to help sustain the priestly class and the poor. Since fruit from one year could not be used to tithe for another, the Rabbis had to determine when a crop year would begin and end. They chose the month of Sh'vat as the cut-off date, for this is when, in Israel, the sap begins to run and the trees start to awaken from their winter slumber, before beginning to bear fruit.

Some scholars hold that this was also a day for planting trees, especially ?marriage trees.? It was customary for parents who had been blessed with children during the preceding year to plant special seedlings on the 15th of Sh?vat. Cedars were planted for boys, cypress trees for girls. When the children grew up and married, the trees were cut down and used as part of the chuppah (marriage canopy). Some Israelis continue this custom today.

Like Hanukkah, Tu BiShvat is a post-biblical festival, instituted by the Rabbis. However, the holiday has biblical roots. The tithing system upon which it is based dates back to the Torah and its deep concern with trees, harvests, and the natural world, all of which are at the heart of Tu BiShvat. Beginning with the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden all the way through to Deuteronomy?s injunction against destroying fruit trees in times of war, our biblical text is replete with trees, both literal and metaphorical. Indeed, the Torah itself often is referred to as an Eitz Chayim (Tree of Life), based on a passage in the Book of Proverbs.

In modern times, Tu Bishvat was nourished by the rise of the Zionist movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which re-emphasized the Jewish people?s connections to the land and the natural world. It was the Zionist pioneers who ? with strong f inancial support from Jews throughout the world who donated trees to mark smachot (special occasions) ? re-forested the land of Israel, largely under the auspices of the Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemet l?Yisrael). As a result of this emphasis on tree-planting ? on Tu BiShvat and all year long ? Israel stands as the only country in the world with an almost constant net growth of trees.

Above all, the Torah itself is seen as a ?Tree of Life,? a growing and abundant source of spiritual sustenance to a great people. Perhaps this is the best indication of the reverence and respect that Judaism holds for God?s world. The tree has been a symbol of l ife and continues to be a source of l ife for Israel today. On Tu BiShvat, we celebrate that l ife in joy and gladness.

Purim

The story of Purim is found in the Book of Esther, one of the books in the Ketuvim (Writings) section of the Bible. It is set in the land of Persia (current day Iran) at the time when Ahashverosh was king. King Ahashverosh held a banquet in the capital city of Shushan and ordered his queen, Vashti, to come and dance before his guests. She refused to appear and lost her royal position.

Acting on advice from his counselors, Ahashverosh had women from all over the kingdom brought to him, so he could choose a new queen. Esther, a young Jewish woman from Shushan, was chosen. However, following the advice of her cousin, Mordechai (who raised her after her parents died), Esther did not reveal her Jewish origins to the king.

Mordechai often sat near the gate of the king's palace. One day he overheard two men, Bigthan and Teresh, plotting to kil l the king. Mordechai reported what he had heard to Esther. She then reported the information to the king. The matter was investigated and found to be true, and Bigthan and Teresh were put to death. Mordechai's deed was recorded in the king?s diary.

Meanwhile, the king's evil adviser, Haman, paraded through the streets, demanding that all bow down to him. Because Jews do not bow to anyone but God, Mordechai refused to bow down to Haman. Upon learning that Mordechai was Jewish, Haman decided to kil l all the Jews in the Persian empire. He plotted to kil l them? convincing King Ahashverosh to go along with the plan? and cast purim ("lots," plural of pur), a kind of lottery, to determine the day on which he would carry out his evil deed: the 13th of Adar.

However, Mordechai alerted Esther to Haman's evil plot, and Esther, in turn, revealed her Jewish identity to the king, convincing him to save the Jews and foil ing Haman's plot. The Jews were allowed to f ight back against the king?s soldiers and triumphed after a f ierce battle. Haman was hanged, Mordechai received his estates and the position of royal vizier (adviser), and the Jews of Persia celebrated their narrow escape on the 14th of Adar, the day after they were supposed to be annihilated.

Thus, the fate Haman had planned for the Jews became his own. The holiday of Purim celebrates the bravery of Esther and Mordechai and the deliverance of the Jewish people from Haman?s decree of death.

Over the centuries, Haman has come to symbolize every anti-Semite in every land where Jews were oppressed. The signif icance of Purim lies not so much in how it began, but in what it has become: a thankful and joyous aff irmation of Jewish survival.

In the Book of Esther, we read that Purim is a time for "feasting and merrymaking," as well as for "sending gif ts to one another and presents to the poor" (Esther 9:22). In addition to reading the M'gillah (Book of Esther), celebrants dress in costumes, have festive parties, perform "Purim-spiels," sil ly theatrical adaptations of the story of the M'gillah, send baskets of food (mishloach manot) to friends, and give gif ts to the poor (matanot l'evyonim).

Hamantaschen (Yiddish for Haman's pockets) are three-cornered pastries f il led with poppy seeds (mohn in Yiddish), fruit preserves, chocolate, or other ingredients that are traditionally eaten on Purim. In Israel during the weeks leading up to Purim, the aroma of freshly baked hamantaschen can be smelled on every block. Their triangular shape is thought to be reminiscent of Haman's hat or ears.

As part of the carnival-l ike atmosphere of Purim, many children and adults wear costumes. Some attribute this tradition to the fact that Esther init ially ?masked? her Jewish identity. Now a vibrant and widely practiced custom, some choose to dress as characters from the Purim story, while others select Jewish heroes from throughout history.

The M'gillah (scroll) most often refers to M'gillat Esther (The Scroll of Esther) which also is known as the "Book of Esther." According to the Talmud, "The study of Torah is interrupted for the reading of the M'gillah." Maimonides, a 12th century sage and rabbi, teaches, "The reading of the M'gillah certainly supersedes all other mitzvot."

A number of customs are associated with the reading. Haman, the enemy of the Jews in this story, is associated with all those who have tried to destroy the Jewish people throughout history. Therefore, we make loud noises? verbally or with noisemakers? at every mention of Haman?s name in order to drown it out. Derived from the Polish word meaning ?rattle,? a grogger is the noisemaker used to drown out the name of Haman during the reading of the M'gillah. Beginning in the 13th century, Jews throughout Europe sounded the grogger as a part of their Purim celebrations.

A Purim-spiel (pronounced shpeel, rhymes with "reel") is a humorous skit presented on Purim. Most parody the story of the Book of Esther, but it also is common for participants to take the opportunity to poke some gentle fun at themselves and their idiosyncrasies.

Mishloach manot are gif ts of food that friends (and prospective new friends!) exchange on Purim. Often presented in baskets, most mishloach manot include hamantaschen, the traditional three-sided pastry eaten on Purim, but may also include a wide variety of foods and treats. These gif ts are frequently referred to by their Yiddish name, shalachmanos.

Matanot l'evyonim (gif ts to the poor) are gif ts given at this season to those in need so that they, too, can celebrate Purim with a special meal. Many families have committed to participating in this important social justice aspect of the holiday.

MEMBERSHIP BENEFIT: RABBI STERN OFFERS COUNSELING Is there something you would like to discuss? Is there a stressor in your life that you want to address? One of the TRT Membership Benefits is the opportunity to have up to three pastoral counseling sessions with Rabbi Stern at no cost. Rabbi Stern is a Board Certif ied chaplain, offering pastoral counseling to individuals and groups. To learn more, or to make an appointment, call the off ice at  732-308-0055 or call Rabbi Stern directly and confidentially at  732-580-2569.

WOULD YOU SHARE YOUR (JEWISH) WISDOM WITH US? Temple Rodeph Torah invites you, our members, to share your wisdom with us by speaking at a Shabbat evening service. We will give you plenty of t ime to prepare and we will guide you along the way.

Your topic should teach something that relates to Judaism, and which you feel will be of interest to the people attending the service. We hope you will draw on your own life experiences: What have you learned from your life, or from a specif ic event in your life, and how could that be of value to others? If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, contact Rabbi Weber at 732-409-1268, or [email protected].

EDNA COLEMAN ISRAEL SCHOLARSHIP FUND TRT offers scholarships to any student presently in the confirmation program or who has been confirmed, up through and including the summer after 12th grade. Money in the Israel Scholarship Fund will be equally divided among all students traveling to Israel this summer on an approved youth Israel trip, not to exceed $1,000 per student.  Requests for scholarship money should be in writ ing to the Education Committee.  Contact Ellen Finkelstein, at 732-972-8624, or [email protected] for more information. We appreciate the congregation's generosity in considering the Edna Coleman Israel Scholarship Fund when making a donation to the temple.

SPECIAL SERVICES SPONSORSHIP Throughout the year, TRT hosts a variety of services with outside speakers or other unique aspects. Several of these events are planned for the coming year, but we need help from the congregation to make these events possible. We are seeking special service sponsors. Your invitation to a neighbor or friend to join you at a service is the best advertising we have. We are also happy to send our Newsletter to any interested family, but we can't do it until you tell us who they are. Call the temple off ice, at 732-308-0055, and give us the names; we will take it from there. And if they join (in any category other than Parent/Grandparent), and remain members for a minimum of six months, you get a month?s dues f ree! Think about what your belonging to Rodeph Torah means to you, and help us reach out to others. (Besides, you can always use another driver for the carpool...)

PLEASE HELP US HELP YOU When scheduling a life-cycle event in which you would like either Rabbi Weber or Rabbi Stern to participate (weddings, namings, funerals, unveilings, etc.), please call them first. If you set the time for such events without calling, it may be impossible for them to attend. Though a funeral overrides almost everything else, clearing the time in advance may save us from disrupting classes or programs already scheduled. We understand the stressful nature of such times in our lives, and with your help we can make them a litt le easier on everyone. If you have any questions about l ife-cycle events, please feel free to call Rabbi Weber, at 732-409-1268 or Rabbi Stern, at 732-580-2569.

ARE YOU GOING ON VACATION OUTSIDE OF THE U.S.A.? WANT TO SEE A REFORM CONGREGATION IN ANOTHER COUNTRY? How do you f ind your larger Progressive/Reform/Liberal family when traveling outside of North America? The process is dif ferent than what you f ind in North America, where synagogues and Jewish institutions in North America generally have an "open-door" policy and regularly welcome visitors. The best way is to have the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) make the connection for you. There are two options available for your search. Several weeks in advance of your vacation, go to www.wupj.org/ f ind-a-community to search for WUPJ congregations. You will see a drop down for country and city, then you click on the search icon. If there is a community in that location, it will appear, with the synagogue's website and contact email. Email the contact directly. It is suggested that people include their full name, Temple Rodeph Torah, Marlboro, NJ. Provide your travel dates, planned accommodations, when you would like to visit the congregation, the number of people in your party, and a way to contact you once you are there.

There is also a new app, Find a Community, which will allow you to locate a congregation, get in contact with them about your trip and what you're looking for, and get directions when you get there. All of our aff il iated congregations are listed in the app, so you won't miss anything. Please note that some locations, including some major cities, do not contain congregations affiliated with the Progressive Jewish Movement. To download, go to www.wupj.org/app .

Purim is Coming!

The Tempie Rodeph Torah Men's Club and Sisterhood are pleased to help you fulfill the special mitzvah of sending Mishloach Manot packages to anyone you wish within the Temple community.

For a very modest cost, we will prepare a beautiful package of Purim goodies, attached to which will be a list of all the families that sent it.

This is a great opportunity to connect with your friends and others you may not know as well within the TRT community.

Watch for a special email or go to purim.trt.org.
